Book excerpt: Nous nous interessons, dans ce memoire, au probleme de commande des s.f.p.m. La complexite de ce probleme est en general trop importante pour envisager la recherche de la meilleure solution avec la prise en compte de tous les criteres (min. Temps total de production, min. En-cours). La commande cyclique se presente comme une solution interessante qui permet de reduire considerablement la complexite. Les travaux de ohl 95a et cam 97 ont permet la mise en place d'une approche structuree, utilisant les reseaux de petri comme outil de modelisation et d'analyse de performances, prenant en compte progressivement les differents indeterminismes du systeme de production afin de conserver le plus longtemps l'optimalite de la recherche. L'utilisation d'heuristiques, pour finir la resolution, est imposee par le caractere np-difficile du probleme d'ordonnancement cyclique. Nous proposons ici une etude approfondie et une extension de cette methode a plusieurs niveaux. Nous etudions tout d'abord la combinatoire des differentes phases precedant l'ordonnancement. Cette etude est indispensable dans l'optique d'une informatisation de l'approche. Dans le second chapitre, nous presentons un algorithme d'ordonnancement cyclique ainsi que une extension a la prise en compte des operations de transfert. Afin de determiner une commande entiere du systeme, nous etudions les regimes transitoires, de lancement et d'arret de la production, sous differents aspects (bornes, durees optimales, continuite des fonctions, existence d'un regime permanent). Le resultat final est une commande previsionnelle entiere du systeme depuis le lancement de la production jusqu'a son arret.

Book excerpt: In the last decade, the production of mechanical components to be assembled in final products produced in high volumes (e.g. cars, mopeds, industrial vehicles, etc.) has undergone deep changes due to the overall modifications in the way companies compete. Companies must consider competitive factors such as short lead times, tight product tolerances, frequent market changes and cost reduction. Anyway, companies often have to define production objectives as trade-offs among these critical factors since it can be difficult to improve all of them. Even if system flexibility is often considered a fundamental requirement for firms, it is not always a desirable characteristic of a system because it requires relevant investment cost which can jeopardize the profitability of the firm. Dedicated systems are not able to adapt to changes of the product characteristics while flexible systems offer more flexibility than what is needed, thus increasing investment and operative costs. Production contexts characterized by mid to high demand volume of well identified families of products in continuous evolution do not require the highest level of flexibility; therefore, manufacturing system flexibility must be rationalized and it is necessary to find out the best trade-off between productivity and flexibility by designing manufacturing systems endowed with the right level of flexibility required by the production problem. This new class of production systems can be named Focused Flexibility Manufacturing Systems-FFMSs. The flexibility degree in FFMSs is related to their ability to cope with volume, mix and technological changes, and it must take into account both present and future changes. The required level of system flexibility impacts on the architecture of the system and the explicit design of flexibility often leads to hybrid systems, i.e. automated integrated systems in which parts can be processed by both general purpose and dedicated machines. This is a key issue of FFMSs and results from the matching of flexibility and productivity that respectively characterize FMSs and Dedicated Manufacturing Systems (DMSs). The market share of the EU in the machine tool sector is 44%; the introduction of focused flexibility would be particularly important for machine tool builders whose competitive advantage is based on the ability of customizing their systems on the basis of needs of their customers. In fact, even if current production contexts frequently present situations which would fit well with the FFMS approach, tradition and know-how of machine tool builders play a crucial role. Firms often agree with the focused flexibility vision, nevertheless they decide not to pay the risk and efforts related to the design of this new system architecture. This is due also to the lack of well-structured design approaches which can help machine tool builders to configure innovative systems. Therefore, the FFMS topic is studied through the book chapters following a shared mission: "To define methodologies and tools to design production systems with a minimum level of flexibility needed to face, during their lifecycle, the product and process evolution both in the technological and demand aspects. The goal is to find out the optimal trade-off between flexibility and productivity". The book framework follows the architecture which has been developed to address the FFMS Design problem. This architecture is both broad and detailed, since it pays attention to all the relevant levels in a firm hierarchy which are involved in the system design. Moreover, the architecture is innovative because it models both the point of view of the machine tool builder and the point of view of the system user. The architecture starts analyzing Manufacturing Strategy issues and generating the possible demand scenario to be faced. Technological aspects play a key role while solving process plan problems for the products in the part family. Strategic and technological data becomes input when a machine tool builder performs system configuration. The resulting system configurations are possible solutions that a system user considers when planning its system capacity. All the steps of the architecture are deeply studied, developing methods and tools to address each subproblem. Particular attention is paid to the methodologies adopted to face the different subproblems: mathematical programming, stochastic programming, simulation techniques and inverse kinematics have been used. The whole architecture provides a general approach to implement the right degree of flexibility and it allows to study how different aspects and decisions taken in a firm impact on each other. The work presented in the book is innovative because it gives links among different research fields, such as Manufacturing Strategy, Process Plan, System Design, Capacity Planning and Performance Evaluation; moreover, it helps to formalize and rationalize a critical area such as manufacturing system flexibility. The addressed problem is relevant at an academic level but, also, at an industrial level. A great deal of industrial sectors need to address the problem of designing systems with the right degree of flexibility; for instance, automotive, white goods, electrical and electronic goods industries, etc. Attention to industrial issues is confirmed by empirical studies and real case analyses which are presented within the book chapters.

Cette méthode d'analyse résout le problème de l'explosion combinatoire qui est apparu lors de l'analyse du réseau de Petri. Nous avons appliqué cette méthode à l'analyse de problème d'ordonnancement cyclique en SFPM. Finalement nous pouvons dire que cette approche est facile à comprendre, elle permet de calculer facilement les solutions.

Nous avons ensuite pris en compte différents types de flexibilité du système de transport et du système de production : flexibilité des gammes opératoires, multiplicité des ressources de transformation, et installation de raccourcis dans les cellules de fabrication. Nous avons fourni, pour chaque type de flexibilité, une méthode de résolution, et développé un algorithme dans le but de résoudre le problème d'agencement pour des systèmes de production et de transports flexibles. La deuxième partie a pour objectif d'élaborer une commande prévisionnelle, déterministe et cyclique des SFPM. D'abord, nous fournissons une approche de résolution hiérarchisée afin de résoudre le problème de planification fine dont une formulation théorique a été fournie par H. Camus. En transformant le problème multicritères en un problème mono-critère, il devient possible de le résoudre. Le critère retenu pendant cette étape consiste en une minimisation du temps total de production. Puis, nous introduisons les durées des opérations de transport lors de la linéarisation des gammes et la formation des regroupements cycliques. Sous la contrainte du respect du temps de cycle déjà optimisé pendant la planification fine de la production, le critère de la minimisation de la borne inférieure d'en-cours est retenu est celui de la minimisation de la borne inférieure d'en-cours. Nous présentons à la fin une heuristique d'ordonnancement des tâches de transport. Le critère étant le nombre d'en-cours dans le système.

La flexibilite existant a differents niveaux est identifiee comme caracteristique essentielle d'un sfpm permettant de reagir aux aleas d'un environnement perturbe, sans presumer de son mode d'exploitation. Cette exploitation etant a la charge de la commande de coordination, nous etablissons alors une hierarchie des modeles qui tient compte des differentes formes de flexibilite a des niveaux appropries. Les differents modeles sont generes et connectes selon une demarche descendante. Nous nous interessons davantage a la conception du modele du systeme de transport qui, structure, correspond a un synoptique representant les flux des produits dans le systeme et permet un routage individuel des produits. Le troisieme chapitre est consacre a la validation formelle des proprietes des modeles de la commande issus de la phase de generation. Elle conduit, suivant une demarche ascendante de validation, a la definition des conditions de vivacite de nos modeles. Cette condition s'exprime par une limitation de l'encours dans le sfpm en fonction de son mode operatoire.

Pour commander en temps réel un tel système, nous proposons un système de commande hiérarchisé à trois niveaux: commande des flux, ordonnancement en temps réel et supervision. Face aux pannes des machines, la commande des flux a pour objectif de satisfaire la demande en ajustant constamment les flux de production en fonction des états des machines et de l'état des stocks. Deux nouvelles méthodes de commande des flux sont proposées en se basant sur la méthode de Kimemia et Gershwin. Au niveau de l'ordonnancement en temps réel, nous utilisons des règles distribuées pour réaliser cet ordonnancement en respectant les flux de production calculés au niveau de la commande des flux. Les règles distribuées se retrouvent dans différents systèmes de commande locaux. Chacun de ces systèmes traite un problème de commande local apparaissant dans le réseau de Pétri commandé. Au niveau supervision, nous formalisons une classe de réseaux de Pétri commandés pour la modélisation et la supervision en temps réel des systèmes de production. Le problème de commande global d'un réseau de Pétri commandé est décomposé en différents sous-problèmes en s'appuyant sur l'analyse des conflits dans le réseau. Afin d'obtenir une bonne performance globale du système, nous proposons une méthode de synthèse de la commande en appliquant la technique de commande des flux.

Book excerpt: The study of optimal shape design can be arrived at by asking the following question: "What is the best shape for a physical system?" This book is an applications-oriented study of such physical systems; in particular, those which can be described by an elliptic partial differential equation and where the shape is found by the minimum of a single criterion function. There are many problems of this type in high-technology industries. In fact, most numerical simulations of physical systems are solved not to gain better understanding of the phenomena but to obtain better control and design. Problems of this type are described in Chapter 2. Traditionally, optimal shape design has been treated as a branch of the calculus of variations and more specifically of optimal control. This subject interfaces with no less than four fields: optimization, optimal control, partial differential equations (PDEs), and their numerical solutions-this is the most difficult aspect of the subject. Each of these fields is reviewed briefly: PDEs (Chapter 1), optimization (Chapter 4), optimal control (Chapter 5), and numerical methods (Chapters 1 and 4).
