Book Liar s Kiss

Download or read book Liar s Kiss written by Eric Skillman and published by Top Shelf Productions. This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: –Skillman and Soriano weave a twisted tale of classic noir. The story keeps you guessing until the end, and the art delivers the right blend of pitch-black shadows and crisp, sexy line work.” --Sean Phillips, artist of Criminal, Incognito, and Sleeper "Loved it. The dialogue crackles, the art's delicious, and the moral ambiguity hits you like a fist in the belly. This is noir at its best."--Charles Ardai, author of Songs of Innocence, Little Girl Lost, and publisher of the Hard Case Crime series THE WAY HE INVESTIGATES IS A CRIME IN ITSELF. Nick Archer isn't much of a detective, but he's managed to get himself one pretty sweet surveillance gig: once a week he sends a jealous millionaire the photos that prove his wife is faithful, leaving Nick plenty of free nights to spend making a liar of both himself and the client's wife. But when the client turns up dead, his cheating wife is the prime suspect and it's up to Nick to clear her-- except Nick has an agenda of his own, and connections to this case that go deeper than anyone realizes. An amazing crime noir debut!

Download or read book The Liar written by Stephen Fry and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An “outrageously hilarious” novel about a young man who has trouble with the truth (The Boston Globe). Adrian Healey loves to lie. He does it all the time. Every minute, every moment. And worse, he does it wonderfully, imaginatively, brilliantly. He lies to buck the system, to express his contempt for convention, but mostly because he just plain likes to. It’s fun. He invents a lost pornographic novel by Charles Dickens, and, for himself, a career as a Piccadilly rent boy, hireable by the hour. But Adrian’s lies eventually bring true danger, as he finds himself caught up in the machinations of a shadowy network that puts his own life at risk, in this “clever and entertaining novel that will appeal to Anglophiles with a twisted sense of humor” (Library Journal).

Book Mendacity and the Figure of the Liar in Seventeenth Century French Comedy

Download or read book Mendacity and the Figure of the Liar in Seventeenth Century French Comedy written by Emilia Wilton-Godberfforde and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017-06-14 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book-length study devoted to this topic, Mendacity and the Figure of the Liar in Seventeenth-Century French Comedy offers an important contribution to scholarship on the theatre as well as on early modern attitudes in France, specifically on the subject of lying and deception. Unusually for a scholarly work on seventeenth-century theatre, it is particularly alert to plays as performed pieces and not simply printed texts. The study also distinguishes itself by offering original readings of Molière alongside innovative analyses of other playwrights. The chapters offer fresh insights on well-known plays by Molière and Pierre Corneille but also invite readers to discover lesser-known works of the time (by writers such as Benserade, Thomas Corneille, Dufresny and Rotrou). Through comparative and sustained close readings, including a linguistic and speech act approach, a historical survey of texts with an analysis of different versions and a study of irony, the reader is shown the manifest ways in which different playwrights incorporate the comedic tropes of lying and scheming, confusion and unmasking. Drawing particular attention to the levels of communicative or mis-communicative exchanges on the character-to-character axis and the character-to-audience axis, this work examines the process whereby characters in the comedies construct narratives designed to trick, misdirect, dazzle, confuse or exploit their interlocutors. In the different incarnations of seducer, parasite, cross-dresser, duplicitous narrator/messenger and deluded mythomaniac, the author underscores the way in which the figure of the liar both entertains and troubles, making it a fascinating subject worthy of detailed investigation.

Book excerpt: NATIONAL BESTSELLER • “You wouldn’t expect a comic novel about a dictionary to be a thriller too, but this one is. In fact, [it] is also a mystery, love story (two of them) and cliffhanging melodrama.” —The New York Times Book Review An award-winning novel that chronicles the charming misadventures of a lovelorn Victorian lexicographer and the young woman put on his trail a century later to root out his misdeeds while confronting questions of her own sexuality and place in the world. Mountweazel n. the phenomenon of false entries within dictionaries and works of reference. Often used as a safeguard against copyright infringement. In the final year of the nineteenth century, Peter Winceworth is toiling away at the letter S for Swansby’s multivolume Encyclopaedic Dictionary. But his disaffection with his colleagues compels him to assert some individual purpose and artistic freedom, and he begins inserting unauthorized, fictitious entries. In the present day, Mallory, the publisher’s young intern, starts to uncover these mountweazels in the process of digitization and through them senses their creator’s motivations, hopes, and desires. More pressingly, she’s also been contending with a threatening, anonymous caller who wants Swansby’s staff to “burn in hell.” As these two narratives coalesce, Winceworth and Mallory, separated by one hundred years, must discover how to negotiate the complexities of life’s often untrustworthy, hoax-strewn, and undefinable path. An exhilarating, laugh-out-loud debut, The Liar’s Dictionary celebrates the rigidity, fragility, absurdity, and joy of language while peering into questions of identity and finding one’s place in the world.

Book excerpt: What is written lives far longer than we do -- or so we would like to think.' From unfinished novel to unsent letters, from prose to play, from Macclesfield to the New Year's Honours List, Liar's Landscape is evidence of the late great author's versatility, wit and passion for the written word. When Sir Malcolm Bradbury died in 2000, he left behind a lifetime's work; some of it published and some of it not; fiction and non-fiction; short stories and novels; completed work, work in progress, work barely begun; plans, sketches, notes, titles. Given shape and coherence by his son, Dominic, that work has now become Liar's Landscape, a book about books, about writing and writers, about being a writer and, of course, about being Malcolm Bradbury. 'Liar's Landscape is essential reading for all admirers of Malcolm Bradbury and, for those who don't know his work, an invaluable sampler of his worldly-wise humour and satirical wit' Tom Rosenthal, Independent

Book excerpt: To some, it is the voice of the nation, yet to others it has never been clearer that the BBC is in the grip of an ideology that prevents it reporting fairly on the world. Many have been scandalised by its pessimism on Brexit and its one-sided presentation of the Trump presidency, whilst simultaneously amused by its outrage over 'fake news'. This punchy polemic galvanises the debate over how our licence-fee money is spent, and asks whether the BBC is a fair arbiter of the news, or whether it is a conduit for pervasive and institutional liberal left-wing bias.

Book Melville and Repose

Download or read book Melville and Repose written by John Bryant and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1993-10-28 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Bryant's book is a strong and significant argument for the centrality of the comic and repose in Melville's novels. The purpose of Melville and Repose is dual: to ground the uses of romantic humor in Melville in sensitive readings of contemporaneous European and American writings, and to offer a definitive account of the comic as the shaping force of Melville's narrative voice throughout the major phase of his literary career. Bryant argues that Melville fused a "rhetoric of geniality" and "picturesque sensibility" adopted from the British with a "rhetoric of deceit" borrowed from the American tall tale in order to create his own amiably cosmopolitan "rhetoric of aesthetic repose." Thorough research into American culture and recent Melville manuscript findings, an engaging style, and full, scholarly readings combine to make this historicist study a welcome addition to the libraries of Americanists and Melville scholars and enthusiasts.

Book The Liar s Quartet

Download or read book The Liar s Quartet written by Mark Thomas and published by September Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-09 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Funny, provocative and moving, The Liar's Quartet includes the scripts with brand new commentary from Mark Thomas' most acclaimed comic, political theatre. 'There is a battle of narratives. The working-class narrative is being erased. And as you erase that narrative, you erase truths with it.' Layered with political insight (and insult), and peppered with anecdote, The Liar's Quartet is a bravura performance in its own right. Each multi-award winning show examines Thomas' obsession with the bonds that bind us, those of family, friends and communities. Beginning with Bravo Figaro!, Mark puts on an opera in his dying father's living room (with the help of Royal Opera House singers) to explore their relationship. In Cuckooed, he unpicks the betrayal of a friend and a fellow activist who was in fact employed to spy for the UK's biggest arms company, BAE systems. And in The Red Shed, Mark returns to his political roots to harness the power of collective memory and celebrate the importance of working-class struggles and narratives in a story he describes as 'a topical tale about the miners' strike'. Laughter, anger and connection. Mark Thomas is more essential than ever ...
