Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comedies of Terence: Literally Translated Into English Prose, With Notes In this Version of the Plays of Terence the Text of Volbehr, 1846, has been followed, with the few exceptions mentioned in the Notes. The Translator has endeavoured to convey faithfully the meaning of the author, and although not rigorously literal, he has, he trusts, avoided such wide departures from the text, as are found in the versions of Echard, Cooke, Patrick, and Gordon. In the Translation of Phaedrus, the Critical Edition by Orellius, 1831, has been used, and in the AEsopian Fables, the text of the Parisian Edition of Gail, 1826. The Notes will, it is believed, be found to embody the little that is known of the contemporary history of the Author.
