Book The Kaohsiung Experience The Local Travel Guide to Kaohsiung and Tainan Taiwan

Download or read book The Kaohsiung Experience The Local Travel Guide to Kaohsiung and Tainan Taiwan written by Cindy Liu and published by Taiwan Guide. This book was released on 2024-09-18 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kaohsiung, perched on Taiwan's southern coast, is "real Taiwan." Kaohsiung is a lot less internationalized and modernized than Taipei -- and that's its charm. The food, especially seafood, is amazing. The temples, night markets, and small restaurants tend to be just quirkier than Taipei's. And the crosswalk signs are creative moving cartoons. Kaohsiung was Taiwan's rust belt a few decades ago, but now is emerging as a hub of culture, art, and technology. The Kaohsiung Experience is the local Kaohsiung. Night markets will be the start of our food explorations, but definitely not the end. I'll show you a hidden suspension bridge, urban wetlands, late-night desserts, a half-abandoned skyscraper, and, of course, lots of ferries and boat rides. We'll also get the dead skin shaved off your feet, visit a secret cafe in a sake shop, and hit up a seafood market (and sushi restaurant) that give Tokyo a serious run for its money. This is Kaohsiung. It's so worth discovering. Everything has a map link and a QR code, so you can navigate Kaohsiung like a local, or better. Get ready. Charge your smartphone and lace up your walking shoes. You're about to get The Kaohsiung Experience.

Download or read book One China Many Taiwans written by Ian Rowen and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-15 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One China, Many Taiwans shows how tourism performs and transforms territory. In 2008, as the People's Republic of China pointed over a thousand missiles across the Taiwan Strait, it sent millions of tourists in the same direction with the encouragement of Taiwan's politicians and businesspeople. Contrary to the PRC's efforts to use tourism to incorporate Taiwan into an imaginary "One China," tourism aggravated tensions between the two polities, polarized Taiwanese society, and pushed Taiwanese popular sentiment farther toward support for national self-determination. Consequently, Taiwan was performed as a part of China for Chinese group tourists versus experienced as a place of everyday life. Taiwan's national identity grew increasingly plural, such that not just one or two, but many Taiwans coexisted, even as it faced an existential military threat. Ian Rowen's treatment of tourism as a political technology provides a new theoretical lens for social scientists to examine the impacts of tourism in the region and worldwide.

Book Journey Through the White Terror

Download or read book Journey Through the White Terror written by Kang-i Sun Chang and published by 國立臺灣大學出版中心. This book was released on 2013-02-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kang-i Sun Chang is Malcolm G. Chace ’56 Professor of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University. In her memoir, Journey Through the White Terror, she tells the powerful story of her father Paul Sun (1919-2007). Along with numerous others, Sun was imprisoned more than 60 years ago during the “White Terror”, the decade following the withdrawal of Chiang Kai-shek’s Nationalist government from Mainland China to Taiwan in mid-December 1949. During this time, the Nationalist government implemented a policy of “better to kill ten thousand by mistake than to set one free by oversight,” and as a result, many innocent civilians such as the author’s father became victims of ferocious searches and persecutions. At the time of her father’s arrest, Prof. Chang was not quite six years old; when her father returned home, she was almost sixteen. Having witnessed the injustice of her father’s imprisonment and the freedom their family later enjoyed in America, she felt compelled to write this story. Prof. Chang’s account of how the family survived the White Terror makes her book one of the most intense and thrilling works on the subject. But the book is also about soul-searching and the healing of a childhood trauma. It is a true story about the triumph of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Love and religion in such circumstances prove to be the ultimate deliverance. All this is described in considerable detail in this extraordinary memoir.

Book excerpt: As do other mighty forces such as wars, nationalist aspirations, and the shifting courses of great rivers, globalization changes the world's borders by bending them out of shape and creating new transnational spaces. State political boundaries no longer draw the definitive line in people's lives they once did. Borders continue to contain self-described national populations and national activities, but the penetration of economic globalization via growing cross-border trade, investment, and resurgence of myriad regional ethnic groups is pushing and stretching the limits of borders into both interactive spaces and contested terrains. Indeed, new power centers with their own identities are springing out of once politically trivial and economically marginal landscapes. While the terrorist attacks of 2001 and the SARS outbreak of 2003 prompted states to tighten border controls, their efforts amount to only a temporary reversal of a powerful long-term trend toward more open borders and the interactive transnational spaces that openness fosters. This innovative book examines the complexities of de-bordering and re-bordering through a structured comparison of seven transborder subregions along the western Pacific Rim and an extended comparative analysis of the U.S.-Mexico border and several European border regions. Xiangming Chen offers a synthetic explanation for the complex and diverse processes and outcomes of economic growth, social transformation, infrastructure development, and urban landscapes in the new transnational spaces around the porous and mutated borders on the Pacific Rim and beyond.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This taut thriller provides the behind-the-scenes reality of the national security system at work --the CIA, the Oval Office, the Pentagon, and the National Security Council -—and is must-reading for fans of Tom Clancy and W.E.B. Griffin. In 1945, the U.S. submarine Tigerfish mistakenly torpedoed and sunk a Japanese merchant ship. Reportedly carrying supplies to allied POWs, the ship had been given safe passage, but was actually a cunning ruse devised by a powerful secret society to transport tons of gold out of Japan under the very eyes of the enemy. Some thirty years later, the captain of the Tigerfish is murdered in Washington. As the CIA launches its investigation into his death, a race to raise the ship and recover its treasure begins, which mounts to an international incident involving the U.S., China, the Soviet Union and Japan.
