Download or read book Come Sit on My Tangerine Couch written by Carol Y. Godsave and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Author Who am I? I am a small, mouthy person who was born on the East Coast at the end of WW II, grew up and matured in placid 1950’s Americana and the turbulent 60s and 70s. I was a successful entrepreneur and businesswoman during the docile 80s and 90s and am now aging in the turbulent early years of the 21st century. I have driven a hippie van and muscle cars, ridden subways in NYC, Boston, London and Paris, rescued old cats, started and managed several businesses, subsisted on food stamps, made $1 million in a year, voted in every election since age 21, knitted about 1,000 scarves, planted about 1,000 bulbs and hugged many more than 1,000 times.

A white father. Two murdered sons. A quest for vengeance. Ike Randolph has been out of jail for fifteen years, with not so much as a speeding ticket in all that time. But a Black man with cops at the door knows to be afraid. The last thing he expects to hear is that his son Isiah has been murdered, along with Isiah’s white husband, Derek. Ike had never fully accepted his son but is devastated by his loss. Derek’s father Buddy Lee was almost as ashamed of Derek for being gay as Derek was ashamed of his father's criminal record. Buddy Lee still has contacts in the underworld, though, and he wants to know who killed his boy. Ike and Buddy Lee, two ex-cons with little else in common other than a criminal past and a love for their dead sons, band together in their desperate desire for revenge. In their quest to do better for their sons in death than they did in life, hardened men Ike and Buddy Lee will confront their own prejudices about their sons and each other, as they rain down vengeance upon those who hurt their boys. Book excerpt: Even life in the greatest city in the world can sometimes feel like a little too much. For this New Yorker, running away to the Heartland may be just the antidote. When New York City native Desirée Christian-Cohen flees her sometime-boyfriend, unhappy mother, Nina (who's recently learned her soon-to-be ex-husband Patrick is gay), and failing grandfather, she picks the flight plan by randomly dropping her finger on a map and hitting: Honey Creek, Kansas, population 1,623. And if being a "tourist" in Honey Creek weren't noticeable enough, try hanging out in the Sweet Tooth luncheonette, where you're referred to as "half a Jew." Wary of , but wanting to, fit in with the local populace, Desirée is forced to defend herself and define herself in a world that feels vastly different from her own. Her Yale boyfriends were never like Bobby McVicar, the son of two ageing hippies, who finds all he needs in his pinprick of a hometown. And never—even as an only child of typically doting Manhattan parents—has anyone paid so much attention to Desirée. Over one surprising, transformative and sometimes very funny summer, Desirée Christian-Cohen, member-in-good-standing of the Self Esteem Generation, discovers how an impulsive escape from home and family turns out to be much more than that.

Devastatingly sexy and annoyingly arrogant, the former pro surfer from Hawaii delights in driving her and everyone else crazy. So, why does she have to continually remind herself to stay away from him? Two uniquely handsome men tempt her. Both want to make her their own. But one is her employee, and the other is a confirmed player. Will she be swept away by temptation? High Tide and Island Side is a heart-twisting, gut-churning, page-turning, coming-of-age duet. Book excerpt: Steven Leroy Zienner is a hard-working, hard-driving, hard-headed, economic materialist. Money, because of the influence it has over people and because of the things it buys, is the highest value he places on life. Unrestrained ambition in the pursuit of accumulating large profits, Mr. Zienner believes, lies at the heart of success and, at the same time, he believes wealth is the key to complete happiness. As a result of his genius in the affairs of business, (that, and the willingness to exploit his employees to maximum effect) Mr. Zienner became a multimillionaire before his 30th birthday. The story takes place in the 195O''s in Cleveland, Ohio; Vicksburg, Mississippi; and Paris, France. At this point, it should be noted that this story, The Downfall and Rise of Steven Leroy Zienner, is not merely a story about a man''s company, or the products that he sells, or even his rise from humble beginnings to wealth and privilege. It is a story about a choice a person ultimately makes between personal growth or self destruction when faced with personal tragedies and financial ruin. It is about the stubbornness as well as the willingness to see different points-of-view; it is about the desire to live in accordance with certain values and principles, or the lack thereof; it is also about the importance of family and friends; and the discovery, examination, and triumph over some of the most unattractive and malevolent elements within human nature. All-in-all, it''s about a man''s downfall; but more importantly, his struggle to rise in the pursuit of the ethics of Happiness.

Download or read book In Zanesville written by Jo Ann Beard and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2011-04-25 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the acclaimed author of The Boys of My Youth and Festival Days, a “mesmerizing… beautifully written” debut novel that evokes the wrenching, exquisite moment just before we step into adulthood (Ann Patchett). The fourteen-year-old narrator of In Zanesville is a late bloomer. She flies under the radar — a sidekick, a marching-band dropout, a disastrous babysitter. Luckily, she has a best friend with whom she shares the everyday adventures of a 1970s American girlhood, incidents through which a world is revealed and character is forged. In time, the two girls' friendship is tested — by their families' claims on them, by a clique of popular girls who stumble upon them, and by their first startling, subversive intimations of womanhood. With dry wit and piercing observation, Jo Ann Beard shows us that in the seemingly quiet streets of America's innumerable Zanesvilles is a universe of wonders, and that within the souls of the awkward and the overlooked often burns something radiant. "Probably my favorite novel of the year...A marvelous reading experience...I don't think I'll ever forget the unnamed, perfectly realized narrator of In Zanesville." —Nancy Pearl, NPR

Feitell’s characters deal with shifting dynamics in relationships—whether they be best friends, lovers, family, or even strangers—that consistently leave them torn between two places or commitments. In the title story, Janie has undergone a painful childbirth experience and her group of friends must pioneer new dynamics while she wonders how to bring her old self back. On this short detour from normal life he comes to understand “the funny thing about finding your way in the world. There was a place laid out for you . . . and even as you stepped into it, happy for the chance to rest, you wondered how you ever ended up there.” Funny, big-hearted, and deft, Here Beneath Low-Flying Planes navigates the reader through the life that happens when you’re planning other things. Book The Poetry of Du Fu

Download or read book The Poetry of Du Fu written by Stephen Owen and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2015-11-13 with total page 2741 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Complete Poetry of Du Fu presents a complete scholarly translation of Chinese literature alongside the original text in a critical edition. The English translation is more scholarly than vernacular Chinese translations, and it is compelled to address problems that even the best traditional commentaries overlook. The main body of the text is a facing page translation and critical edition of the earliest Song editions and other sources. For convenience the translations are arranged following the sequence in Qiu Zhao’an’s Du shi xiangzhu (although Qiu’s text is not followed). Basic footnotes are included when the translation needs clarification or supplement. Endnotes provide sources, textual notes, and a limited discussion of problem passages. A supplement references commonly used allusions, their sources, and where they can be found in the translation. Scholars know that there is scarcely a Du Fu poem whose interpretation is uncontested. The scholar may use this as a baseline to agree or disagree. Other readers can feel confident that this is a credible reading of the text within the tradition. A reader with a basic understanding of the language of Chinese poetry can use this to facilitate reading Du Fu, which can present problems for even the most learned reader.
