Staying put for the first time in years, Beau developed a new kind of lifestyle as the Backyard Adventurer. Whether it was walking 90km to work with no provisions, building a canoe paddle out of scavenged scrap or running a disused railway line through properties, blackberry thickets and past inquiring police officers, Beau has been finding ways to satisfy his adventurous spirit close to home. This book is about conscious experimentation with adventure, making meaning and inspiration out of tins of beans, bits of rubbish and elbow grease. Beau’s Backyard exploits are funny, authentic, insightful and being copied all over the world by everyday people. Book Landscaping for Privacy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The area around your home is your haven, your sanctuary, your refuge from the noise and irritation of traffic, eyesores, and nosy neighbors. Or at least it could be if there was some sort of barrier between your front yard and the sidewalk, or if you didn't have to stare at the back of the neighbors' garage when you want to relax on your patio. Landscaping for Privacy brims with creative ideas for minimizing or even eliminating the nuisances that intrude on your personal outdoor space. Scores of real-world examples show you how to keep the outside world at bay by strategically placing buffers (such as berms or groups of small trees), barriers (such as fences), and screens (arbors or hedges, for example) around your property. And the helpful plant lists tell you precisely which varieties to choose in order to enhance your sense of seclusion. If you've ever felt frustrated by the lack of privacy whenever you step outside your home, this inspiring book will steer you toward an achievable solution.

Book Serious Foolishness

Download or read book Serious Foolishness written by Angie Austin and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2019-07-03 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was a really small town, but it had its own homegrown radio broadcaster. That was Larry, carrying his wooden pole with an empty tin can nailed on it (his "microphone"), a wooden chair (his "stage"), his guitar on his back, to the middle of town to "perform" daily for the locals. People would gather around to applaud and request songs, but all of Larry's songs were alike, yelling into that tin can. As far as the kids, for their entertainment, they had to create their own. Like driving their car on the train tracks, flying like the wind—until they met an oncoming train. And if the local sheriff got in their way, they just overpowered him and locked him up in his own jail overnight. After moving up north to train show horses, they discovered those northern cowboys had their own unique way of enduring that brutally cold weather: they would just get drunk and then fight with each other. They were gang fights, but all of them were friends. Great sport. Unless you were a native there, this seemed a bit odd to outsiders. So they moved down south, hoping for a friendlier and more acceptable way of living and got there in time to meet early integration head-on. Then they had to learn a new modified Geechee/Gullah language in order to communicate with their hired help. What they found was that as a rule, those Southerners overall were the most gracious, friendliest, lovable, and unique people of all. As far as the weather, though it was usually more reasonable, in one day alone, they could have monsoon-like rains, followed immediately by a metal-melting heat wave, and topped off with a heavy fog that swooped down over you like a massive wet blanket that made those winters up north seem mild.

Book Deacon

    Book Details:
  • Author : Marguerite Keiffer
  • Publisher : Xlibris Corporation
  • Release : 2016-06-14
  • ISBN : 1514493519
  • Pages : 86 pages

Download or read book Deacon written by Marguerite Keiffer and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a true story based on my experiences with my beloved cat, Deacon. He was not an ordinary cat; instead, he was a little person clothed in cat fur that I adored. He was my constant companion during the turbulent years of my preadolescent and adolescent years. Whats in a name? In the beginning of Creation, God gave Adam, the first man, a job to do: To name each and every animal and bird on earth. Long ago, when I was a child, I read a quotation from one of Mark Twains books. He said that Adam called a dog a dog because he looked like a dog. As a little girl, I thought that this was very funny. To my readers, I ask the same question. How would you decide to go about this. I will give you a thought to consider from a cats point of view. In the beginning, the animal told about in this story had no name. Some called him a feline; others, a pest. When he met Adam, he was nameless but determined to be given a name worthy of his own kind (Gen. 2:1920). With great curiosity, he approached Adam. Sniffing and looking all around to make sure he was safe, he finally seated himself beside this first man. Adam looked him over carefully; he liked his friendly attitude and curiosity that made Adam want to pet him. But, this animal had a mind of his own; he could be temperamental. His name should be cat, a name that has fit him through the ages. This is how his name came about: C = curiosity A = attitude T = temperament ________________ CAT My only exaggeration in this entire tale is when I tell about Deacon crying, tears flowing down his face. To a little emotional girl of eight, she imagined her Deacon did shed a few tears of love, of course! I am letting Deacon tell his own story: he is the protagonist. This is a wonderful story to read to a young child before bedtime or for a middle school student to read to himself/herself. Deacon will capture your imagination with his adventures and shenanigans!

Book Attracting Songbirds to Your Backyard

Download or read book Attracting Songbirds to Your Backyard written by Sally Roth and published by Rodale Books. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The best ways to attract melodic birds, with insight into their rapidly changing habits The American robin and northern cardinal are two of the best-loved songbirds, but newer backyard arrivals, like rose-breasted grosbeaks and scarlet tanagers, quickly captivate with their vivid colors and unique songs. Bird lovers will learn to attract new visitors by offering treats that songbirds like best, such as soft, easy-to-peck foods that closely mimic caterpillars, their top food preference. And planting just a few carefree perennials and shrubs can provide opportunities for cover and nesting. Sally Roth's Attracting Songbirds to Your Backyard draws on the latest science and 50 years of observation to reveal these fascinating details: • In the wee hours, it's the robins that sing first, followed by the babble of house wrens and the whistle of cardinals • Some birds learn birdsongs throughout their lives, while others stop learning once they can mimic their parents' song • It's Dad, not Mom, who teaches the young birds to sing Simple tips, ideas, and recipes, as well as an understanding of why songbirds are coming from the treetops into the backyard, will help any bird enthusiast create a songbird sanctuary.
