Book Laser Diagnostics and Optical Measurement Techniques in Internal Combustion Engines

Download or read book Laser Diagnostics and Optical Measurement Techniques in Internal Combustion Engines written by Hua Zhao and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2012-07-30 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing concern about CO2 emissions and energy prices has led to new CO2 emission and fuel economy legislation being introduced in world regions served by the automotive industry. In response, automotive manufacturers and Tier-1 suppliers are developing a new generation of internal combustion (IC) engines with ultra-low emissions and high fuel efficiency. To further this development, a better understanding is needed of the combustion and pollutant formation processes in IC engines. As efficiency and emission abatement processes have reached points of diminishing returns, there is more of a need to make measurements inside the combustion chamber, where the combustion and pollutant formation processes take place. However, there is currently no good overview of how to make these measurements. Based on the author’s previous SAE book, Engine Combustion Instrumentation and Diagnostics, this book focuses on laser-based optical techniques for combustion flows and in-cylinder measurements. Included are new chapters on optical engines and optical equipment, case studies, and an updated description of each technique. The purpose of this book is to provide, in one publication, an introduction to experimental techniques that are best suited for in-cylinder engine combustion measurements. It provides sufficient details for readers to set up and apply these techniques to IC engines and combustion flows.

Book Development of Laser Diagnostics Techniques for Combustion

Download or read book Development of Laser Diagnostics Techniques for Combustion written by Quaid Rafique Vohra and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying turbulent combustion at the fundamental level is a primary requirement to construct robust, accurate, efficient models to predict the performance of complex combustion systems. Laser based diagnostics offer significant advantage of probing multiple facets of the combustion processes simultaneously and are capable of providing quantitative information of the highly coupled phenomenon. Design of a vitiated co-flow burner is presented for laser diagnostics of turbulent flames. A foundation was laid to be able to perform Rayleigh scattering, Coherent Ani-Stokes Raman Spectroscopy, Heterodyne velocimetry and Particle scattering. Experiment facilities were developed and tests were performed for feasibility, and performance of test equipment. The present work focused on developing facilities for combined diagnostics of, temperature, species, concentration and velocity measurement. Machine vision cameras were studied for their performance with Rayleigh scattering for temperature, high resolution spectrometer is put to test to resolve rotational/vibrational bands from chemiluminesence for species concentration. An optical design for Narrowband CARS is presented. An experimental setup for multiphase turbulent flow is presented and methods were developed for image analysis in a multiphase turbulent flow. An experimental setup for simultaneous measurement of gas species concentration, particle concentration and particle velocity is presented. The final section discusses analysis of diode lasers and optics to perform seedless Laser Heterodyne Velocimetry. The current work also discusses some of the common problems and solutions for laboratory experiments using laser diagnostics.

Book Advanced Laser Diagnostics Development and Application

Download or read book Advanced Laser Diagnostics Development and Application written by D. F. Grosjean and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental and numerical investigations on gas-turbine combustion processes and jet-fuel thermal stability were undertaken. Advanced laser-based diagnostic techniques were developed and applied to the experimental study of combustion processes (jet diffusion flames and research combustors) and jet-fuel thermal-stability processes (autoxidation, global chemistry, and fuel-additive effects). In addition, numerical computational fluid dynamics with chemistry (CFDC) models detailing both the fluid dynamics and chemistry were developed to simulate realistic environments. The development, calibration, and evaluation of the numerical models employing fundamental combustion and fuel experiments was the ultimate goal of this research program.

Book 2003 Laser Diagnostic in Combustion Conference

Download or read book 2003 Laser Diagnostic in Combustion Conference written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The GRC Laser Diagnostics in Combustion aims at bringing together scientists and engineers working in the front edge of research and development to discuss and find new ways to solve problems connected to combustion diagnostics. Laser-based techniques have proven to be very efficient tools for studying combustion processes thanks to features as non-intrusiveness in combination with high spatial and temporal resolution. Major tasks for the community are to develop and apply techniques for quantitative measurements with high precision e.g of species concentrations, temperatures, velocities and particles characteristics (size and concentration). These issues are of global interest, considering that the major part of the World's energy conversion comes from combustion sources and the influence combustion processes have on the environment and society.

Book Application of Advanced Laser Diagnostics to Hypersonic Wind Tunnels and Combustion Systems

Download or read book Application of Advanced Laser Diagnostics to Hypersonic Wind Tunnels and Combustion Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This LDRD was a Sandia Fellowship that supported Andrea Hsu's PhD research at Texas A & M University and her work as a visitor at Sandia's Combustion Research Facility. The research project at Texas A & M University is concerned with the experimental characterization of hypersonic (Mach>5) flowfields using experimental diagnostics. This effort is part of a Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) and is a collaboration between the Chemistry and Aerospace Engineering departments. Hypersonic flight conditions often lead to a non-thermochemical equilibrium (NTE) state of air, where the timescale of reaching a single (equilibrium) Boltzmann temperature is much longer than the timescale of the flow. Certain molecular modes, such as vibrational modes, may be much more excited than the translational or rotational modes of the molecule, leading to thermal-nonequilibrium. A nontrivial amount of energy is therefore contained within the vibrational mode, and this energy cascades into the flow as thermal energy, affecting flow properties through vibrational-vibrational (V-V) and vibrational-translational (V-T) energy exchanges between the flow species. The research is a fundamental experimental study of these NTE systems and involves the application of advanced laser and optical diagnostics towards hypersonic flowfields. The research is broken down into two main categories: the application and adaptation of existing laser and optical techniques towards characterization of NTE, and the development of new molecular tagging velocimetry techniques which have been demonstrated in an underexpanded jet flowfield, but may be extended towards a variety of flowfields. In addition, Andrea's work at Sandia National Labs involved the application of advanced laser diagnostics to flames and turbulent non-reacting jets. These studies included quench-free planar laser-induced fluorescence measurements of nitric oxide (NO) and mixture fraction measurements via Rayleigh scattering.
