Book Combustion Diagnostics of Propellant with New Grain Geometries

Download or read book Combustion Diagnostics of Propellant with New Grain Geometries written by R. E. Tompkins and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High progressivity/density (HPD) propellants are under consideration at the Ballistic Research Laboratory (BRL) for a variety of enhanced ballistic applications. The HPD concept involves the tailoring of the mass generation rate to match the increasing chamber volume as the projectile moves down the gun tube. This can be accomplished physically by designing a grain which will increase in surface area at a designated point in the ballistic cycle. It can also be done chemically by formulating grains with compositions that vary throughout the grain. As these layers burn through, the burn rate can be tailored to change at specific points in the ballistic cycle.

Book Propellant Combustion Diagnostics

Download or read book Propellant Combustion Diagnostics written by Nathan Klein and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 47 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of the present status of knowledge regarding gun propellant combustion under realistic conditions indicates that information is needed regarding spatial and temporal distribution of reaction products and intermediate species. Information as to the identity of a number of such species and the non-equilibrium 'temperature' of these materials is also urgently needed. A number of optical techniques have recently been developed that hold promise for producing some of the needed information. The complexity of the techniques and their level of development varies widely and their potential must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as to which would be most amenable for use. A large portion of the equipment required for their exploitation is the same so that an effort in the general area of combustion diagnostics by advanced optical methods would make a number of the methods available for evaluation. Ancillary data concerning propellant functioning other than combustion would also become available if such a combustion diagnostics program were actively pursued. (Author).

Book The Mobile Combustion Diagnostic Fixture and Its Application to the Study of Propellant Combustion Part 1 Investigation of the Low Pressure Combustion of LOVA XM39 Propellant

Download or read book The Mobile Combustion Diagnostic Fixture and Its Application to the Study of Propellant Combustion Part 1 Investigation of the Low Pressure Combustion of LOVA XM39 Propellant written by J. O. Doali and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mobile Combustion Diagnostic (MCDF) has been fabricated to investigate the chemical products produced from the combustion of propellants at pressures below 16 MPa. These data are required in order to better understand the combustion phenomenology of propellants at low pressures. The design and capabilities of the MCDF as well as preliminary chemical analysis of nonequilibrium ignition/combustion products using GC and FTIR techniques from hot wire initiated LOVA XM39 propellant are presented. The experiments were performed in both a closed bomb mode and vented chamber mode at various loading densities and pressures. It was found that greater amounts of nonequilibrium combustion products were produced under interrupted burning conditions than under closed bomb conditions and that these products decreased with increasing burst disc pressure and increased with higher loading density. Keywords: LOVA (Low Vulnerability Ammunition); Combustion and ignition; Combustion diagnostics; LOVA XM39 Propellant; Interrupted combustion; Combustion Gas analysis. (JES).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume selects over sixty papers presented at this symposium, and provides an excellent introduction to the state-of-the-art technology in non-intrusive combustion diagnostics for propulsion systems. As such, it is invaluable for researchers wishing to adopt the methods directly, to those interested in assessing the accuracy, advantages, and limitations of specific techniques, and to those seeking a starting point for new ideas toward advances in combustion diagnostics. Topics range from LIF and PLIF techniques to diagnostics of particles, gaseous reaction systems, and solid propellants. Also covered are diagnostics in practical combustion systems.

Book Surface and Gas phase Diagnostics for Solid Propellant Combustion

Download or read book Surface and Gas phase Diagnostics for Solid Propellant Combustion written by John H. Stufflebeam and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program addresses the extremely challenging problem of direct, in situ diagnostics of the heterogeneoys surface reaction zone of energetic materials combustion. Specifically, the experiments employed an optical diagnostic, Raman scattering, to provide critically-needed species- and temperature-specific information on surface and near-surface reaction zones of modern, nitramine-based propellant formulations. Experiments employed a laboratory-scale, motorized, and servo-controlled, strand burner over a range of pressure from 1-20 atm. Broadband Raman scattering from the surface layer was acquired with a spectrograph detection system and Stokes/anti-Stokes ratios were used to provide surface temperature measurements. Raman thermometry was shown to be an effective diagnostic for surface temperature measurements of RDS combustion. The temperature sensitivity of the Raman spectrum of RDS was analytically modeled and verified by experimental data. The optical properties, reflectivity and absorptivity, were measured at 532 nm during this investigation. Signal interferences and laser perturbations (laser damage threshold, laser induced heating, laser induced fluorescence) were investigated at excitation wavelengths of 355, 532 and 783 nm. The surface temperature measured with Raman thermometry was in excellent agreement with the results of microthermocouple data obtained in other laboratories.

Book Combustion in Solid Propellant Grain Defects A Study of Burning in Single and Multi Pore Charges

Download or read book Combustion in Solid Propellant Grain Defects A Study of Burning in Single and Multi Pore Charges written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trend toward very high solids loading in high energy propellants leads to complexities in processing and to greater potential for ballistic anomalies. Present day high energy propellants are often more frangible than their predecessors and physical properties are now found, in many cases, to exert an inordinate effect on combustion. New failure modes are believed to be able to contribute to deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT). For example, crumbling of a burning grain due to impact or shear represents vastly increased surface area which, if ignited, could lead to detonation. Combustion of porous or frangible charges is therefore of interest to the propulsion community. This study reduces the problem of convective combustion in porous charges and other grain defects to its ultimate simplicity (viz., the single pore), and then proceeds to reconstruct the more complicated geometrical and combustion situations leading to the porous bed or highly cracked (i.e., spiderweb) propellant. Flashdown (one of the more dramatic types of convective combustion), may be defined as runaway combustion rates (and pressure) associated with flame propagation into grain defects such as ducts, fissures, annuli, pores, etc. This type of anomalous combustion leads to flame spreading rates many orders of magnitude greater than normal. Pressures and pressurization rates exceeding design limits are common where such phenomena occur.
