Download or read book The Monumental Inscriptions from Early Islamic Iran and Transoxiana written by Sheila Blair and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1991-11-01 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inscriptions on buildings are a distinctive feature of Islamic architecture, and this book studies the 79 surviving monumental inscriptions in the Iranian world from the first five centuries of the Muslim era (A.D. 622-1106), the period in which all the major trends of monumental epigraphy in the area were set. These foundation, commemorative, and funerary texts come from the region between Iraq and Soviet Central Asia. Written primarily in Arabic, they embellished architectural monuments and furnishings whose nature implies the construction of major buildings. An extended introduction discusses such general topics as titulature, patronage, and stylistic development. Each text is then presented individually with photographs, drawings, transcriptions, translations and an extensive commentary, which presents the inscription in its larger palaeographic and historical contexts.

Download or read book Frogley Cockhead and Crutch written by Paul Sullivan and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2015-06-01 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Willy Cockhead had to live with his name. So too did countless others lumbered with ridiculous monikers, safely hidden away in Oxford’s records and censuses – until now.And what names! Some rhyme (Dick Thick), a few are odd (Silly Waters), others you have to say out loud (Rhoda Turtle) and some are just groan-worthy (Blenda Belcher).Uncovered by local author Paul Sullivan and accompanied with strange-but-true anecdotes, this entertaining volume of baffling, ill-thought-out and just plain rude examples champions the people and places of Oxfordshire that got saddled with the daftest of names.
Download or read book The Oxford Book of Local Verses written by John Holloway and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1987 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This delightful anthology celebrates the largely anonymous but often inventive and gifted authors of local verse. An inmate at Millbank who scratched a few lines about English prisons on the bottom of his dinner-can, or a Kent gunner who petitioned for his discharge in verse. There are verses found on village crosses, fountains, sundials, bells, and caves. The book includes epitaphs and also verses inscribed on moveable objects such as clocks and pottery, silverware and books. Country charms and weather rhymes, children's games and farming songs add to the variety of tone and style.

Download or read book The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare written by Michael Dobson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-10-15 with total page 1630 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare is the most comprehensive reference work available on Shakespeare's life, times, works, and his 400-year global legacy. In addition to the authoritative A-Z entries, it includes nearly 100 illustrations, a chronology, a guide to further reading, a thematic contents list, and special feature entries on each of Shakespeare's works. Tying in with the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's death, this much-loved Companion has been revised and updated, reflecting developments and discoveries made in recent years and to cover the performance, interpretation, and the influence of Shakespeare's works up to the present day. First published in 2001, the online edition was revised in 2011, with updates to over 200 entries plus 16 new entries. These online updates appear in print for the first time in this second edition, along with a further 35,000 new and revised words. These include more than 80 new entries, ranging from important performers, directors, and scholars (such as Lucy Bailey, Samuel West, and Alfredo Michel Modenessi), to topics as diverse as Shakespeare in the digital age and the ubiquity of plants in Shakespeare's works, to the interpretation of Shakespeare globally, from Finland to Iraq. To make information on Shakespeare's major works easier to find, the feature entries have been grouped and placed in a centre section (fully cross-referenced from the A-Z). The thematic listing of entries - described in the press as 'an invaluable panorama of the contents' - has been updated to include all of the new entries. This edition contains a preface written by much-lauded Shakespearian actor Simon Russell Beale. Full of both entertaining trivia and scholarly detail, this authoritative Companion will delight the browser and reward students, academics, as well as anyone wanting to know more about Shakespeare.
