Book Combat Command The Black Road War

Download or read book Combat Command The Black Road War written by Neil Randall and published by Baen Books. This book was released on 2018-10-02 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Battle’s Triumph I parry the first sword that slashes at me, and as I swing away from it, I manage to cut through the wrist that holds it. A minor victory, since the creature simply switches to another hand, but one that makes me realize these creatures can be beaten. “They bleed!” I shout at the top of my lungs, then steady my feet and swing once more. This time a hideous black head falls to the ground at my feet. My heart pumps loudly now, and my spirits soar. I don’t know what chance I have in this battle, but in some ways I don’t care. No matter what the outcome, to have discovered at last this newfound joy I have, a joy in battle—in fighting for good—is even worth dying for… At the publisher's request, this title is sold without DRM (Digital Rights Management).

Book The Battle of the Bellicourt Tunnel

Download or read book The Battle of the Bellicourt Tunnel written by Dale Blair and published by Frontline Books. This book was released on 2011-04-21 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In November 1918 the BEF under Field Marshal Haig fought a series of victorious battles on the Western Front that contributed mightily to the German army’s defeat. They did so as part of a coalition and the role of Australian ‘diggers’ and US ‘doughboys’ is often forgotten. The Bellicourt Tunnel attack, fought in the fading autumn light, was very much an inter-Allied affair and marked a unique moment in the Allied armies’ endeavours. It was the first time that such a large cohort of Americans had fought in a British army. Additionally, untried American II Corps and experienced Australian Corps were to spearhead the attack under the command of Lieutenant General Sir John Monash with British divisions adopting supporting roles on the flanks. Blair forensically details the fighting and the largely forgotten desperate German defence. Although celebrated as a marvellous feat of breaking the Hindenburg Line, the American attack failed generally to achieve its set objectives and it took the Australians three days of bitter fighting to reach theirs. Blair rejects the conventional explanation of the US ‘mop up’ failure and points the finger of blame at Rawlinson, Haig and Monash for expecting too much of the raw US troops, singling out the Australian Corps commander for particular criticism. Overall, Blair judges the fighting g a draw. At the end, like two boxers, the Australian-American force was gasping for breath and the Germans, badly battered, back-pedalling to remain on balance. Overall the day was calamitous for the German army, even if the clean break-through that Haig had hoped for did not occur. Forced out of the Hindenburg Line, the prognosis for the German army on the Western Front – and hence Imperial Germany itself – was bleak indeed.

Book excerpt: The True Bloods are in disarray, their alliance crumbling and their armies humbled by the forces of the Black Road. Aeglyss, falling ever deeper into madness, casts a shadow across all. At the court of the High Thane, Anyara faces a savage struggle for survival against the na'kyrim's possessed agent: Mordyn Jerain, the Shadowhand. In the Glas Valley, Kanin, the embittered Horin-Gyre Thane, plots a desperate rising against the halfbreed. But ultimately it will be Orisian, Thane of a Blood that no longer exists, who must stand face to face with a darkly transcendent Aeglyss and make the sacrifice -- of himself and others -- required to end the threat he represents. Fall of Thanes is the spectacular conclusion to the Godless World trilogy, a sweeping epic of war, politics and empire.

Book Patton at the Battle of the Bulge

Download or read book Patton at the Battle of the Bulge written by Leo Barron and published by Dutton Caliber. This book was released on 2015-11-03 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hitler's forces had pressed in on the small Belgian town in a desperate offensive designed to push back the Allies, starting the Battle of the Bulge. So far, the US soldiers had managed to repel waves of attackers and even a panzer onslaught, but as their ammunition dwindled, the weary paratroopers of the 101st Airborne could only hope for a miracle--a miracle in the form of General George S. Patton and his Third Army. More than a hundred miles away, Patton, ordered to race his men to Bastogne, was already putting in motion the most crucial charge of his career. Tapped to spearhead his counterstrike against the Wehrmacht was the Fourth Armored Division, a bloodied but experienced unit that had fought and slogged its way across France. But blazing a trail into Belgium meant going up against some of the best infantry and tank units in the German Army. Failure to reach Bastogne in time could result in the overrunning of the 101st--a catastrophic defeat that could turn the tide of the war and secure victory for the Nazis.

This collection in no way represents an exhaustive record of the Army's months in France, but it is certainly worthy of serious consideration and thoughtful review by students of military history and strategy and will serve as a useful jumping off point for any earnest scholarship on the war. --from Foreword by William A Stofft.

Book The Battle of New Market Heights Freedom Will Be Theirs by the Sword

Download or read book The Battle of New Market Heights Freedom Will Be Theirs by the Sword written by James S. Price and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09-09 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following this historic battle, the United States Colored Troops (USCT) had proven their valor and taken their rightful place amongst heroes in America's history. In the predawn darkness of September 29, 1864, black Union soldiers attacked a heavily fortified position on the outskirts of the Confederate capital of Richmond. In a few hours of desperate fighting, these African-American soldiers struck a blow against Robert E. Lee's vaunted Army of Northern Virginia and proved to detractors that they could fight for freedom and citizenship for themselves and their enslaved brethren. For fourteen of the black soldiers who stormed New Market Heights that day, their bravery would be awarded with the nation's highest honor: The Congressional Medal of Honor. With vivid firsthand accounts and meticulous tactical detail, James S. Price brings the Battle of New Market Heights into brilliant focus with maps by master cartographer Steven Stanley.
