Book excerpt: AN AUSPICIOUS DEBUT EXAMINING THE CULTURE OF HAIR FROM THE RONA JAFFE FOUNDATION AWARD-WINNING CARTOONIST Hot Comb offers a poignant glimpse into Black women’s lives and coming of age stories as seen across a crowded, ammonia-scented hair salon while ladies gossip and bond over the burn. The titular story “Hot Comb” is about a young girl’s first perm—a doomed ploy to look cool and to stop seeming “too white” in the all-black neighborhood her family has just moved to. In “Virgin Hair” taunts of “tender-headed” sting as much as the perm itself. It’s a scenario that repeats fifteen years later as an adult when, tired of the maintenance, Flowers shaves her head only to be hurled new put-downs. The story “My Lil Sister Lena” traces the stress resulting from being the only black player on a white softball team. Her hair is the team curio, an object to touched, a subject to be discussed and debated at the will of her teammates, leading Lena to develop an anxiety disorder of pulling her own hair out. Among the series of cultural touchpoints that make you both laugh and cry, Flowers recreates classic magazine ads idealizing women’s needs for hair relaxers and product. “Change your hair form to fit your life form” and “Kinks and Koils Forever” call customers from the page. Realizations about race, class, and the imperfections of identity swirl through Flowers’ stories and ads, which are by turns sweet, insightful, and heartbreaking. Flowers began drawing comics while earning her PhD, and her early mastery of sequential storytelling is nothing short of sublime. Hot Comb is a propitious display of talent from a new cartoonist who has already made her mark.

Book Femtosecond Optical Frequency Comb Principle Operation and Applications

Download or read book Femtosecond Optical Frequency Comb Principle Operation and Applications written by Jun Ye and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-06-15 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the last few years, there has been a convergence between the fields of ultrafast science, nonlinear optics, optical frequency metrology, and precision laser spectroscopy. These fields have been developing largely independently since the birth of the laser, reaching remarkable levels of performance. On the ultrafast frontier, pulses of only a few cycles long have been produced, while in optical spectroscopy, the precision and resolution have reached one part in Although these two achievements appear to be completely disconnected, advances in nonlinear optics provided the essential link between them. The resulting convergence has enabled unprecedented advances in the control of the electric field of the pulses produced by femtosecond mode-locked lasers. The corresponding spectrum consists of a comb of sharp spectral lines with well-defined frequencies. These new techniques and capabilities are generally known as “femtosecond comb technology. ” They have had dramatic impact on the diverse fields of precision measurement and extreme nonlinear optical physics. The historical background for these developments is provided in the Foreword by two of the pioneers of laser spectroscopy, John Hall and Theodor Hänsch. Indeed the developments described in this book were foreshadowed by Hänsch’s early work in the 1970s when he used picosecond pulses to demonstrate the connection between the time and frequency domains in laser spectroscopy. This work complemented the advances in precision laser stabilization developed by Hall.

This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To keep up with the ever-increasing data transmission speed needs, data center interconnects are scaling up to provide multi-Tbit/s connectivity. These links require a high number of WDM channels, while the associated transceivers should be compact and energy efficient. Scaling the number of channels, however, is still limited by the lack of adequate optical sources. In this book, we investigate novel chip-scale frequency comb generators as multi-wavelength light sources for Tbit/s WDM links.

Book Fractional Dynamics in Comb like Structures

Download or read book Fractional Dynamics in Comb like Structures written by Iomin Alexander and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2018-08-24 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Random walks often provide the underlying mesoscopic mechanism for transport phenomena in physics, chemistry and biology. In particular, anomalous transport in branched structures has attracted considerable attention. Combs are simple caricatures of various types of natural branched structures that belong to the category of loopless graphs. The comb model was introduced to understand anomalous transport in percolation clusters. Comb-like models have been widely adopted to describe kinetic processes in various experimental applications in medical physics and biophysics, chemistry of polymers, semiconductors, and many other interdisciplinary applications. The authors present a random walk description of the transport in specific comb geometries, ranging from simple random walks on comb structures, which provide a geometrical explanation of anomalous diffusion, to more complex types of random walks, such as non-Markovian continuous-time random walks. The simplicity of comb models allows to perform a rigorous analysis and to obtain exact analytical results for various types of random walks and reaction-transport processes.

Book The Teeth of the Comb Other Stories

Download or read book The Teeth of the Comb Other Stories written by Osama Alomar and published by New Directions Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-25 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wonderful short stories that sharpen awareness, from a brilliantly gifted Syrian refugee Personified animals (snakes, wolves, sheep), natural things (a swamp, a lake, a rainbow, trees), mankind’s creations (trucks, swords, zeroes) are all characters in The Teeth of the Comb. They aspire, they plot, they hope, they destroy, they fail, they love. These wonderful small stories animate new realities and make us see our reality anew. Reading Alomar’s sly moral fables and sharp political allegories, the reader always sits up a little straighter, and a little wiser. Here is the title story: Some of the teeth of the comb were envious of the class differences that exist between humans. They strived desperately to increase their height, and, when they succeeded, began to look with disdain on their colleagues below. After a little while the comb’s owner felt a desire to comb his hair. But when he found the comb in this state he threw it in the garbage.

He considered comb honey production and queen rearing to be the benchmark of an accomplished beekeeper. Comb honey is exactly as the bees produce it, with natural comb and no heating or filtering during the production by the bees. Comb honey is a gourmet item in many fine eating establishments, often coupled with fine cheeses and fresh fruit. The book is one of the best on the topic of comb honey production using traditional methods.
