Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Writer and artist Margie Crisp has traveled the length of Texas’ Colorado River, which rises in Dawson County, south of Lubbock, and flows 860 miles southeast across the state to its mouth on the Gulf of Mexico at Matagorda Bay. Echoing the truth of Heraclitus’s ancient dictum, the river’s character changes dramatically from its dusty headwaters on the High Plains to its meandering presence on the coastal prairie. The Colorado is the longest river with both its source and its mouth in Texas, and its water, from beginning to end, provides for the state’s agricultural, municipal, and recreational needs. As Crisp notes, the Colorado River is perhaps most frequently associated with its middle reaches in the Hill Country, where it has been dammed to create the six reservoirs known as the Highland Lakes. Following Crisp as she explores the river, sometimes with her fisherman husband, readers meet the river’s denizens—animal, plant, and human—and learn something about the natural history, the politics, and those who influence the fate of the river and the water it carries. Those who live intimately with the natural landscape inevitably formulate emotional responses to their surroundings, and the people living on or near the Colorado River are no exception. Crisp’s own loving tribute to the river and its inhabitants is enhanced by the exquisite art she has created for this book. Her photographs and maps round out the useful and beautiful accompaniments to this thoughtful portrait of one of Texas’ most beloved rivers. Former first lady Laura Bush unveils this year's Texas Book Festival poster designed by artist Margie Crisp, author of River of Contrasts: The Texas Colorado. The poster features cliff swallows flying over the Colorado River. Book Geology of the fluvial deposits of the Colorado River Valley Central Texas

Download or read book Geology of the fluvial deposits of the Colorado River Valley Central Texas written by Gerald Eric Weber and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terrace deposits along a 40 mile segment of the Colorado River between Austin and Bastrop, Texas, are mapped in detail. The following deposits have been delineated (lowest to highest): Floodplain, Sixth Street Terrace, Montopolis Terrace, Capitol Terrace, Hornsby Terrace, Asylum Terrace, and Delaney Terrace. The Hornsby Terrace deposits and the Montopolis Terrace deposits were previously unrecognized. A program of mechanical analysis was conducted on samples taken from the terrace deposits and the floodplain. Cumulative frequency curves of grain size from five samples collected up to 15 miles apart from the Asylum Terrace gravel, are distinctively grouped--different from all other samples. Cumulative frequency curves from five samples from the Hornsby Terrace gravel also plot in a close grouping distinct from other samples. Over short distances where abrasion is not a dominant factor it seems that grain size distribution may be useful as a means of correlation of terrace remnants. Analysis of the lithologies of these samples indicate that the Hornsby, Asylum and Delaney Terrace gravels are practically without limestone clasts, in a drainage basin that is, presently, composed dominantly of limestone. This suggests that the Commanche Series in the Edwards Plateau region was not extensively exposed but was covered by the Gulf Series at the time of the formation of these terraces. The Manor lag gravel, an upland gravel in the thesis area, is thought to be the remnant of a high terrace deposit of the Colorado River. All terrace gravels except the Capitol and Montopolis Terrace gravels are thought to be the result of lateral planation by a stream at or near grade. The Montopolis and Capitol Terrace gravels are thought to be the result of a lengthy episode of lateral planation by the Colorado River accompanied by slow degradation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colorado River, running through Austin, Texas, and the area now referred to as Lake Travis, has always been a beautiful place to live. The early settlers found it suitable for farming and ranching--until it rained. The rain soaked up soil, and water upstream often engorged the land and washed out everything in its path. Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal created agencies that constructed hydroelectric dams for the Tennessee Valley Authority, and those were used as blueprints for the Lower Colorado River Authority. The ground-breaking for the Mansfield Dam took place on February 19, 1937, and the dam was completed in 1942, providing power and flood control for the area. The dam created Lake Travis and brought about a new recreational industry. Boat docks, lodges, and parks sprang up along the newly created lake, and they are still enjoyed today.

Book Land Transformations in the Bastrop County Colorado River Valley

Download or read book Land Transformations in the Bastrop County Colorado River Valley written by Benjamin John Prince and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study is an investigation of land transformations along the Colorado River in Bastrop County, Texas, and a presentation of planning suggestions to protect and improve the ecology of the river corridor. The rapid population growth experienced in central Texas over the last few decades has manifested itself in extensive land use changes. The Colorado River Valley in Bastrop County has experienced this development in some areas, although, as a whole, it has remained largely agricultural in nature, with more extensive changes occurring in adjacent Travis, Hays, and Williamson Counties to the west. As land values increase and the stock of undeveloped land dwindles, developers are turning their attention east to Bastrop County. This study primarily utilizes historic aerial maps to identify changes along the Colorado River corridor in Bastrop County. The choice of the river corridor as the extent of the study area was made because of the disproportionate importance of this land area for environmental systems services, the myriad contributions that the ecological community provides to humanity and agriculture. This study's primary purpose is to create a baseline documentation of the corridor's existing condition and a menu of recommendations to promote intelligent growth. The study pays special attention to the present and historic extent of the riparian forest (the forest that brackets the river), as this is the "natural" land use that existed prior to Anglo settlement. The study identifies specific instances and trends in land use, which, due to their degree and extent, are having adverse ecological and hydrological impacts. These include industrial, commercial, and residential development, as well as gravel mining and large infrastructure projects.

This book was released on 2017 with total page 412 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This mixed-methods study analyzes changes in water, access, and public discourse in the lower Colorado River valley of Texas from 1970 to 2015. The waters of the lower Colorado River have sustained urban populations and agricultural operations for over a century. Yet, recent, rapid urban growth and a changing climate have led to the prioritization of urban water uses over agricultural water uses. Public discourses, captured by the news media, have documented the mechanisms urban and agricultural water interests have used to maintain, acquire, or control its water resources. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to examine the spatial and temporal patterns of water use and access between urban and agricultural interests, to identify periods of change in water use and access among urban and agricultural water interests, and to analyze the mechanisms that urban and agricultural water interests used to enable or constrain water access. My findings suggest that social, political, economic, and environmental conditions influence who gets water, when, where, and for what purposes and that water use and access has evolved through three distinct periods of change. Urban interests have increasingly expanded their influence in decisions related to water distribution and access by entering into strategic alliances with the regional water authority and by leveraging the power of local and state officials in water matters. Agricultural interests, however, have struggled to maintain access to their historic share of water despite forming new social ties and outlining water's economic importance.
