Book Subfloor Pits and the Archaeology of Slavery in Colonial Virginia

Download or read book Subfloor Pits and the Archaeology of Slavery in Colonial Virginia written by Patricia Samford and published by University of Alabama Press. This book was released on 2007-12-16 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the daily life and culture of enslaved Africans and their descendants. Enslaved Africans and their descendants comprised a significant portion of colonial Virginia populations, with most living on rural slave quarters adjacent to the agricultural fields in which they labored. Archaeological excavations into these home sites have provided unique windows into the daily lifeways and culture of these early inhabitants. subfloor pits be-neath the houses. The most common explanations of the functions of these pits are as storage places for personal belongings or root vegetables, and some contextual and ethnohistoric data suggest they may have served as West African-style shrines. Through analysis of 103 subfloor pits dating from the 17th through mid-19th centuries, Samford reveals how data on shape, location, surface area, and depth, as well as contextual analysis of artifact assemblages, can show how subfloor pits functioned for the enslaved. Archaeology reveals the material circumstances of slaves' lives, which in turn opens the door to illuminating other aspects of life: spirituality, symbolic meanings assigned to material goods, social life, individual and group agency, and acts of resistance and accommodation. about how West African, possibly Igbo, cultural traditions were maintained and transformed in the Virginia Chesapeake.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the 1930s in the United States, the Works Progress Administration developed the Federal Writers’ Project to support writers and artists while making a national effort to document the country’s shared history and culture. The American Guide series consists of individual guides to each of the states. Little-known authors—many of whom would later become celebrated literary figures—were commissioned to write these important books. John Steinbeck, Saul Bellow, Zora Neale Hurston, and Ralph Ellison are among the more than 6,000 writers, editors, historians, and researchers who documented this celebration of local histories. Photographs, drawings, driving tours, detailed descriptions of towns, and rich cultural details exhibit each state’s unique flavor. The WPA Guide to Virgina documents the vital role the Old Dominion played in the history of the first 150 years of the United States and before. It is packed with historical information, particularly from the Colonial and Revolutionary years, and supplemented with photos of historic buildings and sites. Also worth note are the artistic photographs of the state’s ordinary people and its natural beauty, including the Shenandoah and Chesapeake Bay regions.

Book Colonial Churches in Virginia

Download or read book Colonial Churches in Virginia written by Henry Irving Brock and published by . This book was released on 1930 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Colonial church was easy-going as regards doctrines and life, and yet it left its impress on the generations it served. There were churches built in good taste and served by parsons who were scholars if they were not religious enthusiasts. That they were over-fond of fox-hunting and sometimes took a bit too much wine is true, but as they were also the schoolmasters they were perhaps entitled to a little relaxation. A man who preached on Sunday and buried and married, as well as taught six days in the week, was pretty busy. The parsons were farmers besides. -- Introduction.
