Book Allensworth the Freedom Colony

Download or read book Allensworth the Freedom Colony written by Alice C. Royal and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1908. Colonel Allen Allensworth founded a small town in the dry alkaline soil of California's Central Valley. A high-ranking U.S. Army officer and chaplain who had escaped from slavery, he envisioned a utopian community where African Americans could thrive. The town flourished between 1908 and 1918, when some three hundred families relocated there to establish a self-sufficient farming community with its own school, church, businesses, and municipal government. Its existence became and is to this day a symbol and an inspiration to African Americans around the country. In 1976, Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park was created to restore the buildings and preserve the history of this exceptional community. Book jacket.

Book Battles And Victories Of Allen Allensworth A M Ph D Lieutenant Colonel Retired U S Army Illustrated Edition

Download or read book Battles And Victories Of Allen Allensworth A M Ph D Lieutenant Colonel Retired U S Army Illustrated Edition written by Charles Alexander and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2014-06-13 with total page 946 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes Civil War Map and Illustrations Pack – 224 battle plans, campaign maps and detailed analyses of actions spanning the entire period of hostilities. The story of Allen Allensworth is one of true strength and courage in adversity to become the first African-American to attain the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel in the U.S. Army; this was not his only singular distinction by any means. Born into slavery, he escaped by joining the 44th Illinois Volunteers and later served two years in the Navy. Having studied theology, he was ordained as a minister, and in 1886 he gained an appointment as a military chaplain to a unit of Buffalo Soldiers and served in the US Army for the next 20 years. He was also notable for founding the township of Allensworth, California in 1908; it was intended as an all-black community to be free of the racial discrimination faced by so many at the turn of the 20th century. Although the town failed due to the environmental conditions that surrounded its founding, the remains are preserved as the Colonel Allensworth State Historic Park. A fascinating biography of an influential and pioneering African-American.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early morning of November 29, 1864, with the fate of the Union still uncertain, part of the First Colorado and nearly all of the Third Colorado volunteer regiments, commanded by Colonel John Chivington, surprised hundreds of Cheyenne and Arapaho people camped on the banks of Sand Creek in southeastern Colorado Territory. More than 150 Native Americans were slaughtered, the vast majority of them women, children, and the elderly, making it one of the most infamous cases of state-sponsored violence in U.S. history. A Misplaced Massacre examines the ways in which generations of Americans have struggled to come to terms with the meaning of both the attack and its aftermath, most publicly at the 2007 opening of the Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site. This site opened after a long and remarkably contentious planning process. Native Americans, Colorado ranchers, scholars, Park Service employees, and politicians alternately argued and allied with one another around the question of whether the nation’s crimes, as well as its achievements, should be memorialized. Ari Kelman unearths the stories of those who lived through the atrocity, as well as those who grappled with its troubling legacy, to reveal how the intertwined histories of the conquest and colonization of the American West and the U.S. Civil War left enduring national scars. Combining painstaking research with storytelling worthy of a novel, A Misplaced Massacre probes the intersection of history and memory, laying bare the ways differing groups of Americans come to know a shared past.

Download or read book West of Jim Crow written by Lynn M. Hudson and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: African Americans who moved to California in hopes of finding freedom and full citizenship instead faced all-too-familiar racial segregation. As one transplant put it, "The only difference between Pasadena and Mississippi is the way they are spelled." From the beaches to streetcars to schools, the Golden State—in contrast to its reputation for tolerance—perfected many methods of controlling people of color. Lynn M. Hudson deepens our understanding of the practices that African Americans in the West deployed to dismantle Jim Crow in the quest for civil rights prior to the 1960s. Faced with institutionalized racism, black Californians used both established and improvised tactics to resist and survive the state's color line. Hudson rediscovers forgotten stories like the experimental all-black community of Allensworth, the California Ku Klux Klan's campaign of terror against African Americans, the bitter struggle to integrate public swimming pools in Pasadena and elsewhere, and segregationists' preoccupation with gender and sexuality.
