Book The Building of the Oroville Dam

Download or read book The Building of the Oroville Dam written by Larry R. Matthews and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2014-01-20 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early 1960s, thousands of construction workers and their families came to Oroville, in Northern California, to help build the largest earth-fill dam in the world. Located nine miles northeast of town, the Oroville Dam would be the cornerstone of the California State Water Project, which would provide flood control, electric power, recreation, and water to California residents. The project was so massive that it would reinvent the look of much of the area; require the building of roads, bridges, and railroads; inundate much of the area's history under hundreds of feet of water; and greatly effect the lives of the residents of Oroville. The successful completion of the project came at a price--34 construction workers died.

Book Steam and the Chattering Brass

Download or read book Steam and the Chattering Brass written by Norman Resor and published by Publishamerica Incorporated. This book was released on 2009-05 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While it is autobiographic in form, this effort possesses very little emphasis on personal history. Rather, it is an attempt to decide how trains were run during the early a20s up to the diesel age, and the typical lifestyle of that era. Technical details are explained in laymanas terms with numerous illustrations placed here and there with subtle humor. This will be a valuable handbook for rail fans and those who are modeling the era of steam and the chattering brass.

Book excerpt: The clock is relentlessly ticking! Our world teeters on a knife-edge between a peaceful and prosperous future for all, and a dark winter of death and destruction that threatens to smother the light of civilization. Within 30 years, in the 2030 decade, six powerful 'drivers' will converge with unprecedented force in a statistical spike that could tear humanity apart and plunge the world into a new Dark Age. Depleted fuel supplies, massive population growth, poverty, global climate change, famine, growing water shortages and international lawlessness are on a crash course with potentially catastrophic consequences. In the face of both doomsaying and denial over the state of our world, Colin Mason cuts through the rhetoric and reams of conflicting data to muster the evidence to illustrate a broad picture of the world as it is, and our possible futures. Ultimately his message is clear; we must act decisively, collectively and immediately to alter the trajectory of humanity away from catastrophe. Offering over 100 priorities for immediate action, The 2030 Spike serves as a guidebook for humanity through the treacherous minefields and wastelands ahead to a bright, peaceful and prosperous future in which all humans have the opportunity to thrive and build a better civilization. This book is powerful and essential reading for all people concerned with the future of humanity and planet earth.
