The sermon on Liberty, the first one given in the Univer sity Chapel, is the only one not prepared specifically for the University. Its quality, however, is not different from all the rest. It should be noted that many of the lecture fragments are also sermon fragments. Those on Best and Immortality are not very dif ferent from the sermons as actually delivered; that on Prayer is the basis of his sermon on the same subject. Book A Ministry of Fifteen Years in a College Town

Download or read book A Ministry of Fifteen Years in a College Town written by J. T. Sunderland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Ministry of Fifteen Years in a College Town: A Sermon To one who has reached middle life there begins to be something pathetic in the thought of the hurrying years. To youth the flight of time is a desire and a delight, rather than the opposite. The boy longs for manhood - thinks it glorious to be approaching that consummation of human hopes. The young man is eager to get into the bustle, stir and conflict of middle life. But when the conflict has been carried on for a few years, until the vista before begins perceptibly to shorten and that behind to lengthen, then a change comes, and the birthdays begin to have a touch of sadness in them, as we wonder why they hurry so fast to meet us. Ah! time is our mystery of mysteries in this world. We cannot understand it; we can only stand dumb in its presence, and stretch out imploring hands to it as it steals our years away. Our only possible compensation, if not our only possible alleviation, is to be found in the consciousness of spending the years, as they pass, for worthy and useful ends. Thus only can we get out of them the eternal gold that lies in their heart. Such thoughts as these crowd inevitably on my mind as I rise before you this morning, to remembering that we have been fifteen years together as pastor and people. Fifteen years is not a short time even in the history of a church. But in the working life of a man it is a long time. I cannot therefore find it in my heart to pass over such an anniversary as the present one without notice. May I not trust that the spending of the half hour that is before us in looking back thoughtfully over the years of our common life and labor, may not be unwelcome to you. The recollections of these fifteen years naturally divide themselves into three groups: one group gathering about the town, or the community, as a whole; another about the University; and the third about our own church. Can we do better than let our thoughts take this order? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sunday Evenings in the College Chapel: Sermons to Young Men To C. W. E. Severest critic, best of listeners, Questioning all things with perennial youth, Quick to detect when faulty logic errs, Yet quicker to discern each note of truth; Men call you unimpassioned, cold, and stern, The last survivor of the Puritan, They little know the sympathies that burn For every worthy cause or troubled man. Straight to its mark your candid counsel flies, Its shaft of judgment tipped with kind desire, And those it pierces still unwounded rise, Chastened but strong, and purified by fire. Along the coast where we have lived together, There comes at evening-time, in summer weather, A hush of Nature, when the sighing firs Cease their complaining, and no land-breeze stirs The drowsy ocean; while the burnished bay Mirrors the splendor of the dying day. So, After many And Tempestuous Years, And many an angry gale of doubts and fears, The hostile breezes slacken and then cease; The harbor-lights are lit, of love and peace; And life's calm evening settles over you As sunset gathers over Asticou. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Call of the Cross: Four College Sermons Two of these sermons were preached before the students of Iowa College in connection with the day of prayer for colleges. It is pleasant to testify to their evangelistic power as deter mined by that practical test. NO test is more practical. A body of college students is some what unconventional and entirely frank in the response to what comes before them. The combination in these sermons of strong intellectuality with, if possible, yet more pro found spiritual experience, is precisely adapted to effectiveness before college students. These sermons lift up Christ in order that he may draw all men unto him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Others, whose memories go back further, will reply, More than all men else, he was a son of consolation when my house was left unto me desolate. And they will add, He built up a strong parish from slender beginnings his church in Charlestown stood like a lighthouse to warn the young, from far and near, of their perils wherever he preached, he was listened to as if men saw in his every look and word the unmistakable credentials of a great ambassador.'
