It is hoped, therefore, that this manual will be preserved and prove of service to those for whom it is intended. The committee have had to search the entire records of the College to prepare this little work, and they re gret that, in Spite of their care, a number of errors, chiefly typographical, have occurred. A portion of them are noticed under the head of Errata page 50. A mass of material had to be studied, evaluated as to relative importance and, then, set forth in its true light. The minutes of the Board of Trustees and of the College have served as a primary source of information. These, however, proved insufficient for the pur pose. They gave merely facts; the resolutions adopted. They revealed but little of the human side of a movement. They Offered no information as to currents of thought, as to ideas or discussions that eventually led to the adoption of the actions. To supply this necessary element much supplementary reading was re quired, particularly of references to College matters found in the public and trade press. Always, it was necessary to read between the lines of the reports of treasurers, lecture committees, curators and other officers of the institution. In order to render the narrative of the varying activities Of the College more continuous and easier to follow, the author has, in treatment, divided the material into chapters. A certain amount of repetition and overlapping were unavoidable, and yet, this was felt to be preferable to a jolty, disconnected story. They have under taken too much in compelling women to go through the whole curriculum of surgery, pharmacy, materia medica, jurisprudence, etc. Take, for instance, the Woman's Medical College of the New York Infirm ary of the City of New York. An excellent institu tion, thoroughly organized, well equipped with every appliance to enable the student to prepare herself for the practice of medicine, and a corps of professors and instructors that would do honor to any college; yet in the last fourteen years they have only graduated ninety-seven, an average of seven a year, and after fourteen years of hard work on the part of its mana gers, the graduating class of 1883 contained five. Ad mitting that women are capable of assuming and main taining as high a rank in the profession as men, and hoping that the door of every institution of learning will be thrown wide open for their entrance, there still \remains suflicient cause for asserting that to make regu lar practitioners of medicine of women will, except in a few isolated cases, prove unsuccessful.
