Book American Evangelists and Tuberculosis in Modern Japan

Download or read book American Evangelists and Tuberculosis in Modern Japan written by Elisheva A. Perelman and published by Hong Kong University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-21 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tuberculosis ran rampant in Japan during the late Meiji and Taisho years (1880s–1920s). Many of the victims of the then incurable disease were young female workers from the rural areas, who were trying to support their families by working in the new textile factories. The Japanese government of the time, however, seemed unprepared to tackle the epidemic. Elisheva A. Perelman argues that pragmatism and utilitarianism dominated the thinking of the administration, which saw little point in providing health services to a group of politically insignificant patients. This created a space for American evangelical organizations to offer their services. Perelman sees the relationship between the Japanese government and the evangelists as one of moral entrepreneurship on both sides. All the parties involved were trying to occupy the moral high ground. In the end, an uneasy but mutually beneficial arrangement was reached: the government accepted the evangelists’ assistance in providing relief to some tuberculosis patients, and the evangelists gained an opportunity to spread Christianity further in the country. Nonetheless, the patients remained a marginalized group as they possessed little agency over how they were treated. “Perelman captures the strategies that enabled Protestant missionaries to become a central force in treating tuberculosis and providing social services in prewar Japan. Acting as ‘moral entrepreneurs,’ the medical missionaries deftly raised funds abroad, gained support from the Japanese state, gained converts, and cultivated a corps of Japanese medical practitioners.” —Sheldon Garon, Princeton University; author of Molding Japanese Minds: The State in Everyday Life “Based on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, this groundbreaking book traces evangelical Christianity and the work of medical missions in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Japan. It is a must-read for anyone interested in the history of Christianity, disease, medicine, or public health in modern Japan.” —William Johnston, Wesleyan University; author of The Modern Epidemic: A History of Tuberculosis in Japan

Book My Charmed Life

Download or read book My Charmed Life written by Beth Bernstein and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Beth Bernstein’s mother unexpectedly passed away, Beth’s life was forever changed, as she knew that she’d lost not only her best friend, but also a big part of herself. In this heartwarming and moving memoir, Beth learns how to link together the platinum memories of the jewelry handed down to her by the woman who taught her how to love, overcome obstacles, and (most important) accessorize. As a young girl, Beth learned that not all engagements came with a ring. The unconventional engagement watch Beth’s father gave her mother, her mom’s postdivorce transformation from wearing Jackie O pearls to donning love beads--each piece of jewelry represents an intimate memory, a reminder to rise above life’s challenges and enjoy its triumphs. And there are also Beth’s own experiences with rocky romances, of the too many engagement rings she fell in love with and the too few men who could commit. She tells the story of these relationships with sparkles of hilarity and glimmers of hope, conjuring up lost keepsakes and fiery moments--until she realizes that the brightest gems are the ones you give yourself, and finds freedom she never thought possible.

Book excerpt: Love and heartbreak has affected Celebrity Magazine writer, Anne Sherman her entire life. After losing her fiancé in a tragic accident, she gave up her dreams of marriage and a family, instead spending the last ten years building her reputation as one of the top writers in the industry. An assignment to interview the reclusive novelist, Dave Beaumont begins a series of bizarre events that seem to draw the two writers closer, while also threatening to tear them apart. The couple struggles to find an answer to the phenomena that is tampering with their relationship before it’s too late. True, deep and abiding love transcends time and space, heaven and earth, finding its soul mate where and when one least suspects it. * * * Dave stood and started down the steps to the beach. He imagined that it would probably feel like being rocked to sleep as the waves pulled him further out to sea. The tears were streaming down his face and the sobs were beginning to build but he refused to let them come. He hadn’t sobbed out loud as a young child and he wouldn’t begin now. He did however bow his head and pray that God would forgive him. “Please God, forgive me. I simply cannot go on alone like this anymore.” Alone at home Anne began to thrash around in the bed, Dave was in trouble; where was he? Anne looked everywhere she could think of but couldn’t see him. Panic set in and she felt claustrophobic as the dark shrouded fog crept around her like it was attempting to close her in. “Dave, Dave, where are you?” she screamed again and again. Anne began running towards the only light visible in the fog. She couldn’t make out what it was but at least it looked like an opening out of the darkness that surrounded her. Looking ahead she could make out the figure of a man walking towards the ocean. It looked like Dave, but she couldn’t be sure. What in the world was he doing walking into the surf with his clothes on? Just then the man turned and looked straight at her and she gasped. It was Dave, and he looked so forlorn that it broke her heart. He gave her one long last look and then disappeared into the surf. “Da-a-ve, come back!”

Book Gendering the Memory of Work

Download or read book Gendering the Memory of Work written by Maria Tamboukou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-07-07 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores gendered aspects in the memory of work by looking at auto/biographical narratives and political writings of women workers in the garment industry. The author draws on cutting edge theoretical approaches and insights in memory studies, neo-materialism and discourse analysis, particularly looking at entanglements and intra-actions between places, bodies and objects. Tamboukou aims to enrich our appreciation of the role of women’s labour history in the wider realm of cultural memory, as well as in the politics of women’s work. The book addresses a significant gap in the literature by focusing on the memory of work from a gendered perspective. It also examines the relationship between workspaces and personal spaces: the intimate, intense and often invisible ways through which workers occupy workspaces and populate them with their ideas, emotions, beliefs, habits and everyday practices. The book will be a theoretical and methodological toolbox for students and researchers in the interface of the social sciences and the humanities, as well as a vital resource in women’s labour history. It will be particularly relevant for sociologists, cultural theorists, feminist scholars and social historians.
