Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society, Vol. 10 We certainly think that author, who generally is a correct historian, was much mistaken in saying, that the strength of our ecclesiastical constitution lay in the union with the civil authority. It lay in the gen eral respect Which the people had for the platform of chur. H discipline. This prevented them from litigious disputes, Which Would have been in most of the parishes, if their church affairs had been mingled with the courts of justice, however well administered. Some years before the Revolution, this was practised in two or three instances '_only 111 one county, arid left undecided. From the letter of Downing, Governour Winthrop's brother-in-law, who lived at Salem, which town he represented in the General Court, 1639, we shall observe the temper of even those who were not parties in the controversy, and that the spirit of the age in amed the best men to bigotry. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collections of the Massachusetts Historical Society, 1904, Vol. 4 Their fortunes. Among the number was Gen. Heath, who though not absolutely poor could not be called rich. He was the cultivator of an excellent farm which had descended to him from his ancestors through five genera tions.* The retirement which Gen. Heath here enjoyed enabled him to devote considerable time to reading, for which he had a taste, the perusal and arrangement of his papers, which he esteemed of great value, and to writing a book which he perhaps had as well not written. His Memoirs' were near blasting his reputation for that good judgment which in service had made him very much esteemed and respected. But this must not be a handle for censure; the letters which he addressed to persons in all stations during fourteen years of public service forming the bulk of his writings are the best evidence not only of his understanding, but also of his integrity and good heart, and are far from being inelegant com positions. What induced him to publish a private journal hastily written, not so much with reference to public events as to record the trifling occurrences of the camp, cannot be accounted for unless by supposing that he was persuaded by his friends to do what he would otherwise never have thought of, and this in fact he confesses. To Which we owe no more faith than to the tales Of fairies, and other idle romances. Where one relation is exactly according to truth, there are two, at least, that are wholly the fruit Of wild imagination, or intolerably mixt with deceit and falsehood. Hence some have taken oc casion to doubt Of, and deny the existence of spirits, and an invisible world and others to turn all that wise men say or write about them into ridicule. 'tis a pity the world has been so credulous, and furnished these scepticks with, matters to make sport Of. At the same time, it is a thing horrid to think Of, that we should be imposed upon by false relations, and our understandings daily atfronted by lies. It would certainly have been a singular kindness, if those who have been instrumental in detecting false hoods Of this nature, especially causes Of pretended witch crafts, had been careful, and have taken and emitted authentick accounts Of them, from time to time; which might have proved an happy means Of preventing the like, or stopping their progress. When I consider this, and what every one owes to his own generation, and to posterity, I reckon myself obliged to Offer a story, full Of remarkable circumstances, which was the subject Of much discourse and debate, in the day Of it, and has lately, by the wonderful providence Of God, and his most powerful word, been brought to light and unfolded. I trust it may be Of some service to the world, and therefore commend it to the divine blessing. E. T. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
