Book excerpt: One hundred years ago, the people of Scituate proudly boasted not only of living in the coastal town but also of inhabiting the various villages--among them Greenbush, the West End, North Scituate, the Harbor, Scituate Center, Egypt, and Humarock--that comprised their community. Taming the four cliffs of Scituate, the townsfolk harnessed wind and wave to power their mills, scoured and scraped seafloor rocks to gather valuable moss, and outlasted some of the most powerful storms ever to hit the New England coast. Images of America: Scituate takes us on a tour of Dreamwold, "Copper King" Thomas W. Lawson's beautiful country estate, and through the villages to meet the endless list of interesting people who lived there, from Henry Turner Bailey, the U.S. delegate to six International Art Congresses, to Uncle John Brown, celebrated as "the Oldest Man in Scituate." Along the way, we patrol the beaches with the surfmen of the U.S. Life-Saving Service under the shining beacons of Scituate and Minot's Lights coming across the wrecks of the Columbia and the Etrusco.

Book excerpt: Barre, a town set among the hills and valleys of central Massachusetts, started out as a rural farming community that has since grown to almost 5,000 residents. Before Barre became a town in 1774, it was called the Northwest District of Rutland. As more settlers populated the area, the town became gradually autonomous, earning its own name--Rutland District. The name was changed to Barre in 1776 to honor Col. Isaac Barre, a member of the British Parliament who embraced the colonists' cause of independence. As the Industrial Revolution reached Barre, many villages flourished. Textiles, gunpowder, and wood products were all lucrative industries for a time until the twentieth century, when the Charles G. Allen Company and the Barre Wool Company were the main industrial forces. Today, the area is a tourist mecca where visitors can appreciate the display of autumn foliage, the sports of fishing and hunting, and the Woods Memorial Library and its museum.

Book The Storied Landscape of Iroquoia

Download or read book The Storied Landscape of Iroquoia written by Chad L. Anderson and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2020-05 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Storied Landscape of Iroquoia explores the creation, destruction, appropriation, and enduring legacy of one of early America's most important places: the homelands of the Haudenosaunees (also known as the Iroquois Six Nations). Throughout the late seventeenth, eighteenth, and early nineteenth centuries of European colonization the Haudenosaunees remained the dominant power in their homelands and one of the most important diplomatic players in the struggle for the continent following European settlement of North America by the Dutch, British, French, Spanish, and Russians. Chad L. Anderson offers a significant contribution to understanding colonialism, intercultural conflict, and intercultural interpretations of the Iroquoian landscape during this time in central and western New York. Although American public memory often recalls a nation founded along a frontier wilderness, these lands had long been inhabited in Native American villages, where history had been written on the land through place-names, monuments, and long-remembered settlements. Drawing on a wide range of material spanning more than a century, Anderson uncovers the real stories of the people--Native American and Euro-American--and the places at the center of the contested reinvention of a Native American homeland. These stories about Iroquoia were key to both Euro-American and Haudenosaunee understandings of their peoples' pasts and futures. • Pages : 134 pages

Book excerpt: Welcome to Southbridge, the "Eye of the Commonwealth," as it appeared from 1835 to 1955. Incorporated in 1816, Southbridge is comprised of land once part of the towns of Charlton, Dudley, and Sturbridge. The town's first settler was James Deneson, who came to the area in 1730 and spent a short time in a rock shelter just south of the Quinebaug River before building a dwelling for himself and his family. By 1732, more pioneers had arrived, and Moses Marcy set up sawmill operations downstream from the Deneson farm. Marcy's sawmill was just a hint of the industry that prospered in the town over the next two hundred years. Southbridge presents historical images of the town as it grew and thrived during and after the Industrial Revolution, from the Globe Manufacturing Company to the world-renowned American Optical Company. Southbridge is defined not only by its industrial past. Equally important are the images of the commerce, agriculture, and everyday life of its people.
