Book Materilism And Empirio Criticism

Download or read book Materilism And Empirio Criticism written by VI Lenin and published by Legare Street Press. This book was released on 2023-07-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1909, "Materialism and Empirio Criticism" is a seminal work by Soviet revolutionary politician V.I. Lenin. In this book, Lenin sets out to show that the Marxist theory of knowledge is a superior understanding of the world than any competing theory. He argues that the philosophical ideas of empiricism and positivism are essentially flawed and that instead, it is necessary to recognize the role of material reality in human thought. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work-written in 1908 as a militant, occasionally virulent, polemic against certain Bolsheviks who had strayed from dialectical materialism into the jungle of "Machism" and associated idealist philosophies-serves today as an invaluable example of Lenin's approach to philosophy and as a general exposition of dialectical materialism. Lenin's breadth of knowledge shines in this text: he discusses the Marxist theory of knowledge, critiques the idealists, from Berkeley to the then current schools, and examines the contemporary "crisis" in natural science induced by new discoveries about the nature of matter and its concomitant ramifications for scientific study and questions of epistemology. With a new foreword by Helena Sheehan, the reprint of this classic text aims to return Materialism and Empirio-Criticism to the attention of the growing number of students of Marxism in the United States, and to provide material for the study of the interrelationship between Marxist politics and philosophy.

Book Boris Hessen and Philosophy

Download or read book Boris Hessen and Philosophy written by Sean Winkler and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2022-11-21 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1931, Soviet philosopher, Boris Hessen presented a paper at the Second International Congress of the History of Science and Technology in London, England. It was a watershed moment, marking the founding of the ‘externalist’ approach to the history and philosophy of science. Five years after this talk, however, Hessen was executed in what became Joseph Stalin’s Great Purge of the 1930s. Nearly a century after his death, we still know all too little about this pioneering figure and his expansive oeuvre. In this book, Sean Winkler provides a reading of Hessen’s philosophy and its unique approach to understanding the relationship between socioeconomic development, technological progress and natural scientific theory. To further encourage the study of Hessen, the book also includes first-time translations of his contributions to the Soviet Encyclopedia. Through a systematic analysis, Winkler reflects upon Hessen’s contribution to the history and philosophy of science of the past and his possible significance in the world today.

Book Revolution and Culture

Download or read book Revolution and Culture written by Zenovia A. Sochor and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Zenovia A. Sochor here assesses one of the most important debates within the Bolshevik leadership during the early years of Soviet power-that between A. A. Bogdanov and V. I. Lenin. Once comrades-in-arms, Bogdanov and Lenin became political rivals prior to the October Revolution. Their disagreements over political and cultural issues led to a split in the Bolshevik Party, with Bogdanov spearheading the party's left-wing faction and attracting a following of notable intellectuals. Before Lenin died in 1924, however, he had succeeded in shaping Soviet society according to his own vision, and today Bolshevism is commonly identified with Leninism while Bogdanovism is little known. Sochor provides the first full exposition in English of Bogdanov's views, which, she asserts, must be understood to appreciate the choices available and the paths not taken during the formative years of the Soviet regime.
