Book The English Theatrical Avant Garde 1900 1925

Download or read book The English Theatrical Avant Garde 1900 1925 written by Simon Shepherd and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The English Theatrical Avant-Garde, 1900–1925 unearths an extensive range of hitherto forgotten or ignored theatre practices. In doing so it reveals some of the well-known figures of the early twentieth-century English theatre in a strikingly new light. It fluently describes an intensity of innovation and experiment that together made the Edwardian theatre rather more radical, and rather more queer, than we’ve ever thought. Where the majority of writing on the early twentieth-century theatrical avant-garde is concerned with European movements and experiments, English activity of the period is often seen as parochial and conservative – mainly realism and issues-based drama. This book presents a new model of how avant-gardes might work; a model based not on masculine individualism but on communal inclusion. In describing this fascinating material, the author introduces us to many new figures and shows familiar ones in different ways: there’s Florence Farr, independent woman; Bob Trevelyan, radical pacifist and music drama pioneer; Granville Barker doing fairy plays while de-dramatising drama; Laurence Housman, socialist, homosexual, scripting St Francis; and the oddly modern J.M. Barrie. Together they made theatre practices rich in their diversity but consistent in their attempt to be new, producing a theatrical avant-garde unlike any other. This is a vital and indispensable new study for scholars and students of early twentieth-century theatre in England and beyond.

Book The Georgian Poets

Download or read book The Georgian Poets written by Lynn Parker and published by Northcote House Pub Limited. This book was released on 1999 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Georgian movement in literature began as a reaction against late Victorian sensibilities, but world events soon turned this nascent movement upside down, killing two of its most famous members and dispersing the rest amidst a harsher intellectual climate. This introductory study helps to set the Georgians in their original context, and revises the critical balance in favour of three lesser known writers whose contribution to early twentieth-century letters was viewed as significant before the 1930s. The author makes use of archive sources and reviews as wellas recent historicist accounts, bringing these engaging, mysterious and humane writers into focus for the present time.

Book Edward Thomas Prose Writings A Selected Edition

Download or read book Edward Thomas Prose Writings A Selected Edition written by Edna Longley and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-10-05 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Thomas can be seen as the most important poetry critic in the early twentieth century. Thomas was a prose-writer before he was a poet. The Selected Edition of his prose, and especially this volume, shows that he was also a critic before he was a poet. His unusual literary career opens up key questions about the relation between poetry and criticism, as well as between poetry and prose. Thomas wrote books about poetry, but his criticism mainly took the form of reviews. He reviewed collections, editions, and studies of poetry, most regularly, for the Daily Chronicle and the Morning Post. These reviews amount to a unique commentary on the state of poetry and of poetry criticism after 1900. Since reviewing provided Thomas's main income, he also reviewed other kinds of book. Hence the sheer mass of his reviews, the stress he suffered as a literary journalist. Yet his criticism maintains an astonishingly high standard. Thomas's response to contemporary poetry intersects with his readings of older poetry. No critic or poet of the time was so deeply acquainted with the traditions of English-language poetry or so alert to new poetic movements in Ireland and America. Edward Thomas's writings on poetry have a double importance. Besides suggesting the hidden evolution of his own aesthetic, they constitute a lost history and critique of poetry before the Great War. They change our assumptions about that period. Thomas's perspectives on poets such as Yeats, Hardy, Frost, Lawrence, and Pound illuminate the making of modern poetry.
