Book A Geology for Engineers

Download or read book A Geology for Engineers written by F.G.H. Blyth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 967 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No engineering structure can be built on the ground or within it without the influence of geology being experienced by the engineer. Yet geology is an ancillary subject to students of engineering and it is therefore essential that their training is supported by a concise, reliable and usable text on geology and its relationship to engineering. In this book all the fundamental aspects of geology are described and explained, but within the limits thought suitable for engineers. It describes the structure of the earth and the operation of its internal processes, together with the geological processes that shape the earth and produce its rocks and soils. It also details the commonly occurring types of rock and soil, and many types of geological structure and geological maps. Care has been taken to focus on the relationship between geology and geomechanics, so emphasis has been placed on the geological processes that bear directly upon the composition, structure and mechanics of soil and rocks, and on the movement of groundwater. The descriptions of geological processes and their products are used as the basis for explaining why it is important to investigate the ground, and to show how the investigations may be conducted at ground level and underground. Specific instruction is provided on the relationship between geology and many common activities undertaken when engineering in rock and soil.

Book Engineering geology of the Sydney Region

Download or read book Engineering geology of the Sydney Region written by P.J.N. Pells and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 529 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together in one place as much factual data as possible relating to the engineering geology of the Sydney Region, A huge amount of information resides in the files of various consulting and government organizations from the innumerable site investigations and construction projects in Sydney. This information brought together provides a data source that is the first point of reference for future investigations and construction projects. With the above object in mind subject headings were established based on the stratigraphic sequence of the Sydney Basin. Invitations were extended to potential authors with expertise and experience in these subjects and after some two years, the papers in this volume were produced. Engineering Geology of the Sydney Region is produced by a committee. As such it has the advantage of canvassing a broad range of opinion and experience. A data source has been produced for geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists working in or having a particular interest in the Sydney Region.

Book Hydropedology

Download or read book Hydropedology written by Henry Lin and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2012-07-09 with total page 859 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hydropedology is a microcosm for what is happening in Soil Science. Once a staid discipline found in schools of agriculture devoted to increasing crop yield, soil science is transforming itself into an interdisciplinary mulch with great significance not only for food production but also climate change, ecology, preservation of natural resources, forestry, and carbon sequestration. Hydropedology brings together pedology (soil characteristics) with hydrology (movement of water) to understand and achieve the goals now associated with modern soil science. The first book of its kind in the market Highly interdisciplinary, involving new thinking and synergistic approaches Stimulating case studies demonstrate the need for hydropedology in various practical applications Future directions and new approaches are present to advance this emerging interdisciplinary science

Book Sandstone Landforms

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert W. Young
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2009-04-09
  • ISBN : 0521877334
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Sandstone Landforms written by Robert W. Young and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sandstones form the backdrop to some of the world's most spectacular scenery, and are found all over the planet and in all climates. Following on from the authors' successful 1992 book, this is the only volume that considers sandstone landforms from a truly global perspective. It describes the wide variety of landforms that are found in sandstone, and discusses the role of lithological variation, chemical weathering and erosional processes in creating these features, with examples drawn from around the world. Climatic and tectonic constraints on the development of sandstone landscapes are also considered. This volume provides a comprehensive assessment of the literature from publications in a range of languages, and is illustrated with over 130 photographs of sandstone features from every continent. It presents a holistic account of sandstone terrain for researchers and graduate students in a variety of fields including geography, geomorphology, sedimentology and geomechanics.

Book The Combined Finite Discrete Element Method

Download or read book The Combined Finite Discrete Element Method written by Antonio A. Munjiza and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-04-21 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combined finite discrete element method is a relatively new computational tool aimed at problems involving static and / or dynamic behaviour of systems involving a large number of solid deformable bodies. Such problems include fragmentation using explosives (e.g rock blasting), impacts, demolition (collapsing buildings), blast loads, digging and loading processes, and powder technology. The combined finite-discrete element method - a natural extension of both discrete and finite element methods - allows researchers to model problems involving the deformability of either one solid body, a large number of bodies, or a solid body which fragments (e.g. in rock blasting applications a more or less intact rock mass is transformed into a pile of solid rock fragments of different sizes, which interact with each other). The topic is gaining in importance, and is at the forefront of some of the current efforts in computational modeling of the failure of solids. * Accompanying source codes plus input and output files available on the Internet * Important applications such as mining engineering, rock blasting and petroleum engineering * Includes practical examples of applications areas Essential reading for postgraduates, researchers and software engineers working in mechanical engineering.

Download or read book Quaternary History of the Coorong Coastal Plain Southern Australia written by Colin V. Murray-Wallace and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-28 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an up-to-date overview of the Quaternary geological and geomorphological evolution of the Coorong Coastal Plain region and its significance in a global context for understanding long-term records of Quaternary sea-level changes. The Coorong Coastal Plain in southern Australia is a natural laboratory for examining the response of coastal barrier landscapes to relative sea-level changes. The region provides direct evidence of coastal sedimentation during successive interglacials over the past 1 million years, as well as more recent volcanism. The region has received international focus and attracted scientists from around the World, with interests in long-term coastal evolution, sea-level changes, Quaternary dating methods and geochronology, soil development, temperate carbonate sedimentation, karst geomorphology and geologically recent volcanism.
