Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Late one summer afternoon in 2010, wildlife rescuer Lisa Bates set off on a very strange rescue mission. Lisa drove into the Arizona desert with a dog crate in the back of her car. In the crate was a small animal—but it sure didn’t look like a dog. It had reddish-brown fur and a pig-like snout. It was a baby collared peccary that had been separated from its mother. Would Lisa find a way to reunite them? In Collared Peccary: Cactus Eater, kids go on a real-life adventure with wildlife biologist Lisa Bates as she tries to save a lost baby peccary. Along the way, children will learn how peccaries have adapted to their harsh desert climate, including how they find food, stay safe, and keep track of other herd members. Large, full-color photos and a dramatic narrative format will keep readers turning the pages.

Book Ecology Conservation and Management of Wild Pigs and Peccaries

Download or read book Ecology Conservation and Management of Wild Pigs and Peccaries written by Mario Melletti and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 1417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wild pigs inhabit vast areas in Europe, Southern Asia and Africa, and have been introduced in North and South America, while feral pigs are widespread in Australia and New Zealand. Many wild pig species are threatened with extinction, but Eurasian wild boar populations, however, are increasing in many regions. Covering all wild pig and peccary species, the Suidae and Tayassuidae families, this comprehensive review presents new information about the evolution, taxonomy and domestication of wild pigs and peccaries alongside novel case studies on conservation activities and management. One hundred leading experts from twenty five countries synthesise understanding of this group of species; discussing current research, and gaps in the knowledge of researchers, conservation biologists, zoologists, wildlife managers and students. This beautifully illustrated reference includes the long history of interactions between wild pigs and humans, the benefits some species have brought us and their role and impact on natural ecosystems.

Book The Great American Biotic Interchange

Download or read book The Great American Biotic Interchange written by Alberto Luis Cione and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-24 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South American ecosystems suffered one of the greatest biogeographical events, after the establishment of the Panamian land bridge, called the “Great American Biotic Interchange” (GABI). This refers to the exchange, in several phases, of land mammals between the Americas; this event started during the late Miocene with the appearance of the Holartic Procyonidae (Huayquerian Age) in South America and continues today. The major phases of mammalian dispersal occurred from the Latest Pliocene (Marplatan Age) to the Late Pleistocene (Lujanian Age). The most important and richest localities of Late Miocene-Holocene fossil vertebrates of South America are those of the Pampean region of Argentina. There are also several Late Miocene and Pliocene localities in western Argentina and Bolivia. Other important fossils have been collected in localities of Pleistocene age outside Argentina: Tarija (Bolivia), karstic caves of Lagoa Santa and the recently explored caves of Tocantins (Brasil), Talara (Perú), La Carolina (Ecuador), Muaco (Venezuela), and Cueva del Milodon (Chile), among others. The book discusses basic information for interpreting the GABI such as taxonomic composition (incorporating the latest revisions) at classical and new localities for each stage addressing climate, environments, and time boundaries for each stage. It includes the chronology and dynamics of the GABI, the integration of South American mammalian faunas through time, the Quaternary mammalian extinctions and the composition of recent mammalian fauna of the continent.
