Book excerpt: The use of multirotor UAVs to map GPS-degraded environments is useful for many purposes ranging from routine structural inspections to post-disaster exploration to search for survivors and evaluate structural integrity. Multirotor UAVs are able to reach many areas that humans and other robots cannot safely access. Because of their relatively short operational flight time compared to other robotic applications, using multiple UAVs to collaboratively map these environments can streamline the mapping process significantly. This research focuses on four primary areas regarding autonomous mapping and navigation with multiple UAVs in complex unknown or partially unknown GPS-denied environments: The first area is the high-level coverage path planning necessary to successfully map these environments with multiple agents. The second area is the lower-level reactive path planning that enables autonomous navigation through complex, unknown environments. Third, is the estimation framework that enables autonomous flight without the use of GPS or other global position sensors. Lastly, it focuses on the mapping framework to build a single dense 3D map of these environments with multiple agents flying simultaneously.

Book excerpt: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles are frequently used for the exploration of a hostile environment. UAVs can be lost or significantly damaged during the exploration process. Although employing multiple UAVs can increase the chance of success, their efficiency depends on the collaboration strategies used. We present a cooperative exploration strategy for UAVs controlled by autonomous agents. The agents are sharing information, coordinate their short-term goals and path choices, while each agent uses state of the art algorithms for its individual path planning and obstacle avoidance. The overall goals are to minimize the exploration time, avoid damage by sharing information about threats, and be robust to the failures of individual UAVs. Extensive simulation results prove the validity of the approach and provide ways to determine the optimal number of UAVs for different exploration tasks.

Book excerpt: Traditionally, the task of determining aircraft position and attitude for automatic control has been handled by the combination of an inertial measurement unit (IMU) with a Global Positioning System (GPS) receiver. In this configuration, accelerations and angular rates from the IMU can be integrated forward in time, and position updates from the GPS can be used to bound the errors that result from this integration. However, reliance on the reception of GPS signals places artificial constraints on aircraft such as small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that are otherwise physically capable of operation in indoor, cluttered, or adversarial environments. Theefore, this work investigates methods for incorporating a monocular vision sensor into a standard avionics suite. Vision sensors possess the potential to extract information about the surrounding environment and determine the locations of features or points of interest. Having mapped out landmarks in an unknown environment, subsequent observations by the vision sensor can in turn be used to resolve aircraft position and orientation while continuing to map out new features. An extended Kalman filter framework for performing the tasks of vision-based mapping and navigation is presented. Feature points are detected in each image using a Harris corner detector, and these feature measurements are corresponded from frame to frame using a statistical Z-test. When GPS is available, sequential observations of a single landmark point allow the point's location in inertial space to be estimated. When GPS is not available, landmarks that have been sufficiently triangulated can be used for estimating vehicle position and attitude. Simulation and real-time flight test results for vision-based mapping and navigation are presented to demonstrate feasibility in real-time applications. These methods are then integrated into a practical framework for flight in GPS-denied environments and verified through the autonomous flight of a UAV during a loss-of-GPS scenario. The methodology is also extended to the application of vehicles equipped with stereo vision systems. This framework enables aircraft capable of hovering in place to maintain a bounded pose estimate indefinitely without drift during a GPS outage.

We adapt Visual Teach and Repeat (VT), a vision-based autonomous route-following system, to use on multirotor UAVs. Since multirotors are underactuated, there are no guarantees that the camera viewpoint will be the same at matching positions along the teach and repeat paths, which causes visual localization to be challenging. The first part of this thesis demonstrates that by using a 3-axis gimballed camera with an appropriate active pointing strategy, we can improve the visual localization performance and robustness within the VT framework. The second part of this thesis presents a method to estimate the global pose of a UAV by using an information-theoretic approach to register real images with rendered georeferenced images from 3D Google Earth. We show that this method is capable of accurately estimating the 6DoF pose with a position accuracy on par with GPS.

Book excerpt: In this thesis, we propose a strategy for a team of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) to perform reconnaissance of an intended route while operating within aural and visual detection range of threat forces. The advent of Small UAVSs (SUAVs) has fundamentally changed the interaction between the observer and the observed. SUAVs fly at much lower altitudes than their predecessors, and the threat can detect the reconnaissance and react to it. This dynamic between the reconnaissance vehicles and the threat observers requires that we view this scenario within a game theoretic framework. We begin by proposing two discrete optimization techniques, a recursive algorithm and a Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) model, that seek a unique optimal trajectory for a team of SUAVs or agents for a given environment. We then develop a set of heuristics governing the agents' optimal strategy or policy within the formalized game, and we use these heuristics to produce a randomized algorithm that outputs a set of waypoints for each vehicle. Finally, we apply this final algorithm to a team of autonomous rotorcraft to demonstrate that our approach operates flawlessly in real-time environments.

The ability of a UAV to navigate and fly precisely determines its utility and performance. The current navigation systems rely heavily on the Global Positioning System (GPS) and are prone to error because of GPS signal outages. However, advancements in onboard processing power have enabled inertial navigation algorithms to perform well during short GPS outages. This thesis proposes intelligent algorithms to provide the navigation capability during long GPS outages and through GPS-denied environments using optical flow and inertial sensors. Traditional optical flow measurement uses block matching for motion vector calculation that makes the measurement task computationally expensive and slow. This thesis proposes the application of artificial bee colony based block matching for faster optical flow measurement. To make the fusion of optical flow data with inertial sensors efficient, a modified form of Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) is employed. The modifications make the filter less noisy by dynamically assigning weights to multiple sensors. A high accuracy of approximately 95 percent for non-GPS navigation during experiments is achieved.

The development of highly efficient and affordable fleet of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Micro Aerial Vehicles (MAVs) of small size has paved the way to new large-scale applications, that demand such System of Systems (SoS) features in areas like security, disaster surveillance, inundation monitoring, search and rescue, infrastructure inspection, and so on. Such applications require the robots to identify their environment and localize themselves. These fundamental tasks can be ensured by the exploration mission. In this context, this thesis addresses the cooperative exploration of an unknown environment sensed by a team of UAVs with embedded vision. We propose a multi-robot framework where the key problem is to cooperatively choose specific regions of the environment to be simultaneously explored and mapped by each robot in an optimized manner in order to reduce exploration time and, consequently, energy consumption. Each UAV is able to performSimultaneous Localization And Mapping (SLAM) with a visual sensor as the main input sensor. To explore the unknown regions, the targets - selected from the computed frontier points lying between free and unknown areas - are assigned to robots by considering a trade-off between fast exploration and getting detailed grid maps. For the sake of decision making, UAVs usually exchange a copy of their local map; however, the novelty in this work is to exchange map frontier points instead, which allow to save communication bandwidth. One of the most challenging points in MRS is the inter-robot communication. We study this part in both topological and typological aspects. We also propose some strategies to cope with communication drop-out or failure. Validations based on extensive simulations and testbeds are presented.
