Download or read book Aviation Safety written by Gerald L. Dillingham and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ice formation on aircraft can disrupt the smooth flow of air over the wings and prevent the aircraft from taking off or decrease the pilot's ability to maintain control of the aircraft. Takeoff and landing operations can also be risky in winter weather. Despite persistent efforts by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and others to mitigate icing risks, icing remains a serious concern. This report reviewed: (1) the extent to which commercial airplanes have experienced accidents and incidents related to icing; (2) FAA's inspection and enforcement activities related to icing; (3) the efforts of FAA and others to improve safety in winter weather; and (4) the challenges that continue to affect aviation safety in winter weather. Includes recommendations. Tables.

Book The Support of Air Operations Under Extreme Hot and Cold Weather Conditions

Download or read book The Support of Air Operations Under Extreme Hot and Cold Weather Conditions written by North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Advisory Group for Aerospace Research and Development. Aerospace Medical Panel. Symposium and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract : Extreme temperatures, both hot and cold, can severely restrict the ability of aircrew and support personnel to accomplish their missions. Under emergency conditions of bail-out, ejection and ditching of fixed or rotary-wing aircraft on land or in water, the survival rate of aircrew and passengers is also affected by the intensity of thermal stress experienced and the duration of exposure to the thermal stress. This has all recently been borne out by the experience of intense air operations in the Gulf War. This symposium reviewed the operational conditions experienced under extreme hot and cold weather. The papers presented at this Symposium highlighted recent advances in thermal physiology, clothing sciences, personal flying equipment, and microclimate cooling. Emphasis was placed on the potential applications of these advances in situations where thermal stress, or the expectation of thermal stress, may confound the efficient achievement of mission objectives
