Book A Report on Some Trial Shipments of Cold Storage Apples Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Report on Some Trial Shipments of Cold Storage Apples Classic Reprint written by J. A. Ruddick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on Some Trial Shipments of Cold Storage Apples To these figures must be added the very large quantity which is stored in cellars 'and odd places all over the country. It is the practice to repack practically the whole of this large quantity of apples, at very considerable expense. This refers principally to the apples stored in the special warehouses. The repacking may be necessary under these conditions of storage, in order that the rotten and defective apples may be discarded, but it results in serious damage to the sound fruit by increasing the number of bruises, to which the apples are more liable than they are at harvest time, on account of their riper and softer condition. These repacked apples are sent forward to market during the winter and early spring months. It is an undeniable fact that a large proportion of them are in a more or less overripened and damaged condition. The shrinkage which occurs in repacking is a direct loss, amounting, on the whole, to a very large sum. The indirect loss from the demoralizing effect of a large quantity of overripe and damaged fruit on the market is also great, and difficult to estimate. As the crop of apples is increasing from year to year, and the industry is growing in importance by the opening of a large market in the prairie provinces in addition to the well sustained demand in Great Britain and continental countries, it is obvious that any means which may be adopted for better preservation and to reduce the waste and cost of repacking should be a matter of interest to the fruit grower and dealer. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cold Storage for Tropical Fruits Small purple star apples were picked in a half ripe condition and held for 36 days at 32° F. The skin gradually faded and shriveled after the second week. At the end Of the period the pulp Of the fruit was firm, Of good color and perfect flavor. The same variety, picked ripe, kept well for 30 days, but at the end Of a period Of 57 days had deteriorated in color and appearance externally, while the pulp was still perfect in flavor. Specimens Of the same varieties Of star apples, picked green, half-ripe and ripe were placed in refrigeration at a temperature Of 45° F. For a period Of 40 days. The same changes were Observed as in fruit held at 32° F. The deterioration was somewhat more rapid, however, and molds developed more extensively on skin abrasions. The color of the skin was better preserved at 45° than at 32° F. The texture Of the rind, however, and the texture and flavor Of the pulp were much better in the fruit held at 32° F. Book The Cold Storage of Small Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cold Storage of Small Fruits Classic Reprint written by S. H. Fulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-12-14 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cold Storage of Small Fruits In concluding his report Mr. Wright observes that, in his opinion, people do not quickly weary of high-class fruit, and a longer season than at present exists could be secured for many kinds if the best quality were ensured; but, apart from this, there are periods within the season of several perishable fruits - black currants, for instance - when ability to hold the pickings over, if only for a few days, would mean securing an enhanced price. The results of this test agree in general with the results obtained through the cold-storage experiments of the United States Department of Agriculture as to length of time small fruits may be kept in cold storage. Book Cold Storage with Special Reference to the Pear and Peach Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cold Storage with Special Reference to the Pear and Peach Classic Reprint written by George Harold Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cold Storage, With Special Reference to the Pear and Peach Before the advent of the cold-storage busmess the supply of summer pears frequently exceeded the demand. This condition of the markets, which were demoralized in hot, humid seasons, pertained especially to the early varieties, like the Bartlett, which ripen in hot weather and need to be sold in a Short time to prevent heavy losses from rapid decay. The introduction of the refrigerator car and of the cold-storage warehouse, together with the rapid growth of the canning industry, has done much to improve the pear situation by artificially establish ing a well-regulated and more uniform supply of fruit throughout a longer period of time. The pear acreage of the country has more than doubled within a decade, and is enlarging the relative importance of cold storage to the pear-growing business, though a large part of the increase, especially in California, along the Atlantic coast from New Jersey southward, in Texas, and in the Central West, is primarily related to the canning industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ice Cold Storage on the Farm The term cold storage refers chiefly to the preservation of our perishable products, such as fruit, milk, butter, meat, eggs, vegetables, etc., from premature deterioration and decay, in cold air chambers cooled by ice or some other refrigerating means. It is also associated with the curing of cheese, moth-proof storages for woollens and fun, and many other processes. In fact, the term cold storage involves so much nowadays that a large volume would have to be written in order to explain its whole meaning, and its various applications and uses. I wish to em hasize, however, that cold air alone is not cold storage in all cases. It most instances of storage it is very essential that the cold air be very pure and sweet, of the proper humidity or degree of mois ture, and it should circulate freely throughout the storage chambers. And ventilation, or the renewal of the air in the storages, should be well provided for, especially where large quantities of various classes of goods are stored for any length of time. Cold storage. Then, involves means of controlling not only the temperature, but the humidity. Purity, ciren lotion and ventilation of the air within the storage rooms. The degree of these factors varies to a certain extent for the different products and conditions of storage, but cold storage proper always involves them all.
