Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2009 in the subject Art - Photography and Film, grade: 1,5, University College London, course: Italian Cinema and the city, language: English, abstract: Michelangelo Antonioni is one of Italy’s most famous filmmakers of the post-war era. His films are pieces of artwork, the plot develops slowly and there is not much going on. And that makes Antonioni’s films difficult to understand for the mass audience. In his seventh feature film La notte (1961) Antonioni shot in and around Milan in a way to create a disturbing and anonymous atmosphere. This essay will analyse how Antonioni uses the city’s architecture and landscape to illustrate the alienation of people in the modern world. This essay will have a look at the setting, how Antonioni frames the architecture and the characters in one shot. Two specific sequences of the whole movie will be analyzed properly: The opening sequence and the sequence in which Lidia wanders around the city and the periphery.

Book excerpt: From a New York Times–bestselling author, a murder investigation reunites high school sweethearts in book two of a romantic suspense series. If only it had been something else that brought Lissa Sherman and Mack Jackson back in touch after so many years. Something—anything—other than the murder of Mack’s father. Even worse, Lissa’s car had been used as the murder weapon. Thirty-five years ago, four friends went out joyriding and ended up in a terrible accident that left one dead and the others with no memory of that awful night. Now two more people, including Mack’s father, have been murdered, and if the lone survivor knows why they’re being targeted, she’s not talking. Even as Lissa and Mack find themselves drawn together in the midst of tragedy, the mystery deepens when someone comes after Lissa, too. Is the danger to her tied to the other deaths, or are two killers at work in town? Now Mack has to fight an unknown attacker as well as his feelings for Lissa, but it may be that he can’t win either battle.

Book excerpt: She shuts the door behind her, relieved to be in the safety of her own home. But tonight her house is the most dangerous place she could be. Someone has been waiting for her, and they know she’s home alone… Sasha loves her job finding accommodation for homeless people, and she’s proud of the small but cosy apartment she rents on the good side of town. She’s worked hard to leave her dark past behind her and make amends for the accident that still haunts her memories. She knows she was innocent, though she’s still careful about who and what she tells of her old life. But not all secrets stay hidden forever… When her phone rings loudly in the middle of the night, Sasha fears what she’ll hear when she picks up – a deathly silence. It’s happened every night for weeks. Is it a childish prank, or a chilling warning that someone has uncovered her secret? But the news of a body found at a local shelter means her worst nightmare has come true. It can’t be a coincidence that evidence related to the victim has been found at the same location where the most devastating moment of Sasha’s life took place. Days later, a second body is found and Sasha’s heart pounds wildly as she takes in the victim’s unforgettable green eyes. She hasn’t seen her in a long time, but she’d know her old friend anywhere. She was the only other person who knew Sasha’s secret, so how can Sasha prove her innocence now? Book excerpt: Maybe you were there. Or you might be one of the many that, young and old, can’t get enough of these true but fantasy-like life stories involving Strange Places, smiling Faces and Magical Times. Stories about the Sixties, bikers, the Beatles, soaring through High School, the Seventies, Rochdale College, JFK, the encroaching Counter Culture, Our era of pure sex, drugs and Rock ‘n Roll, RFK, Woodstock, LSD, etcetera, etcetera... I am One of the Survivors of what Jerry Garcia referred to as ‘a long strange trip’. We Baby Boomers were born with impeccable Timing; from Elvis to Elvis Costello. And beyond! This is my story of growing up in a Cosmic Time that was despised by the Older Generation and enamored by the Young Prophets of Spiritual Adventurism. To clarify; this was an extraordinary and audacious Time of peace, love and misunderstanding. My collaborating colleagues and I learned ‘street smarts’ in dark ‘separate school’ hallways of rigorous vicissitudes. Street smarts that prepared me for a career with the Attorney General in a Time that coincided with a Decade of Cocaine, fast women, bosomy beaches and Castles made of Sand. If You have a sense of humour and a flare for the Dramatic then follow these journeys and escapades of this Paperback Writer through a Time and Space that will never be forgotten or authentically duplicated. Read, relax, reload and Enjoy!

Book excerpt: Minneapolis detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth join Grace MacBride and Monkeewrench to uncover a dark and ugly conspiracy that reaches deep into the safety of homes in this latest electrifying thriller from New York Times bestselling author P. J. Tracy. It's a bitter winter in Minnesota--too cold to kill. There hasn't been a murder for a month, but the lull quickly comes to an end for Detectives Leo Magozzi and Gino Rolseth, when they're called to the gruesome homicide of Kelly Ramage. Found in a friend's vacant house, this was no random attack, and clues reveal that she was living a very dangerous secret life. Magozzi and Gino trace her steps back to an art gallery where she was last seen alive. The gallery seems like a dead end, but the art is disturbing and exploitative. It may very well be inspiring a sadistic killer, because in this instance, art doesn't imitate life, it imitates death. Tipped off about a year-old murder that is a mirror-image of Kelly's crime scene, Gino and Magozzi enlist the aid of Grace MacBride and her eccentric, tech genius partners in Monkeewrench Software to help them decipher the digital trail that might connect the cases. As coincidences emerge, Magozzi, Gino, and the team have to work around the clock at breakneck pace to unravel a series of clues that form the framework of a larger, more sweeping, and insidious conspiracy than any of them could have imagined. Is Kelly the last person to die or just the most recent? And is there any way to stop it?
