This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Narrative of the Military Actions of Colonel Marinus Willett, Taken Chiefly From His Own Manuscript Sir, The following pages contain a plain and unadorned narrative of the principal military actions in which Col. Willett was engaged during the French and Revolutionary wars: together with an account of his Mission to the Creek Indians. The whole narrative is little more than a transcript of what he himself wrote, after he had attained his seventieth year. In it, will be found a few incidents of an interesting nature, connected with our Revolutionary war, which heretofore have been but slightly, if at all, touched by the pen of the traveller or the historian: while the circumstances that these pages contain the otherwise perishing memorials of one of our oldest Revolutionary Soldiers, will, it is hoped, impart to them a peculiar interest. Book Col Marinus Willett The Hero of Mohawk Valley

Download or read book Col Marinus Willett The Hero of Mohawk Valley written by Daniel E. Wager and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-23 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Col. Marinus Willett; The Hero of Mohawk Valley: An Address Before the Oneida Historical Society Edward Willett (the father of Col. Willett, ) was a Quaker and a farmer of moderate means, near Jamaica, on Long Island; at that homestead Marinus was born on July 31, 1740, (old style.) He was the second son and child in a family of thirteen children the same number that was born uhto his great grandfather afore mentioned. That father died in 1794, at the age of ninety-four years, and, although he belonged to a denomination that was on principle, Opposed to war, yet he was destined to see two of his sons, before they were eighteen, enter the military service of their country, and the one to become a prominent leader; the other to be a lieutenant on an English privateer, and the vessel on which he was engaged swept away in a hurricane in the French war of 1758, and all on board lost at sea. Marinus, until he was nearly eighteen years of age, pursued the quiet and peaceful pursuits of a farm life at his father's homestead. About that period of his life, he was moved by a spirit of self-reliance to leave the paternal roof and provide for himself. With a resolute will and a determined spirit, and with only twenty shillings in his pocket, he crossed over to New York to seek in that great city employment, and, if possible, make his fortune. It was about the time of the French war of 1758, when the colonists were greatly excited by reason of raising of tr00ps, and the activity of the contending forces. In the early Spring of that year, three English expeditions were being fitted out, with a view to attack the French at different points, and drive them out of this country. One of those expedi tions, and in which New York took the greatest interest, was under the command of General Abercrombie, and to be led by him from Albany to lakes George and Champlain to attack Fort Ticonderoga, then garrisoned by tr00ps under Montcalm, a a field marshal of France. Here were to be raised in the vicinity of New York three battalions of 900 men each, to be under the command of Col. Oliver delancey, a brother of the acting governor of New York. Book With Musket Tomahawk Volume I

Download or read book With Musket Tomahawk Volume I written by Michael O. Logusz and published by Casemate. This book was released on 2010-04-19 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive history of the brutal wilderness war that secured America’s independence in 1777—by an author with “a flair for vivid detail” (Library Journal). With Musket and Tomahawk is a vivid account of the American and British struggles in the sprawling wilderness region of the American northeast during the Revolutionary War. Combining strategic, tactical, and personal detail, historian Michael Logusz describes how the patriots of the newly organized Northern Army defeated England’s massive onslaught of 1777, all but ensuring America’s independence. Britain’s three-pronged thrust was meant to separate New England from the rest of the young nation. Yet, despite its superior resources, Britain’s campaign was a disaster. Gen. John Burgoyne emerged from a woodline with six thousand soldiers to surrender to the Patriots at Saratoga in October 1777. Within the Saratoga campaign, countless battles and skirmishes were waged from the borders of Canada to Ticonderoga, Bennington, and West Point. Heroes on both sides were created by the score amid the madness, cruelty, and hardship of what can rightfully be called the terrible Wilderness War of 1777.
