Book Ancient Coins Through the Bible

Download or read book Ancient Coins Through the Bible written by Joseph A. Dow and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coins have not changed much throughout antiquity. Yes, they are made from different, more durable materials now, but they are still etched with depictions of their civilization, whether that means the profile of George Washington or the profile of Emperor Nero or the profile of a lion, the symbol of ancient Babylon. Following the course of time from Abraham to the Crusaders, Ancient Coins through the Bible chronicles the history of various locations mentioned throughout the Bible and presents photographs of ancient coins minted in these cities. Though we cannot see those ancient civilizations or the way they lived, these tangible bits of the past speak abundantly about them. As you view these fragments of history, imagine you are traveling with Abraham to Canaan and Paul to Spain. Experience the biblical stories visually through the coins depicted instead of simply reading them, and better understand the lessons taught by God's Word.

Book Guide to Biblical Coins

Download or read book Guide to Biblical Coins written by David Hendin and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The coins struck in ancient Judea between the fourth century and the second century represent a remarkable and readily available primary source of information about the history, heritage, and emerging culture of the Judeo-Christian tradition. Coins witnessed the return of Jews from the Babylonian captivity, the wars of the Hasmoneans with the Seleucids, the building and the destruction of the Second Temple in Jerusalem, the birth and ascent of Christianity, and the creation of Rabbinic Judaism. This sixth edition comes almost 45 years after the book was first published under the title Guide to Ancient Jewish Coins. In this edition the author has removed and added coins, updated texts to reflect current research, and attempted to improve the chronological nature of the listings. These changes required a new numbering system. Once again, I have used a numbering system that does not duplicate previous editions. A complete concordance with standard current references and previous editions is included"--

  • Author : Emmy Kegler
  • Publisher : Fortress Press
  • Release : 2019-04-02
  • ISBN : 1506448291
  • Pages : 222 pages

Download or read book One Coin Found written by Emmy Kegler and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The stories of Scripture are for everyone. No exceptions. Emmy Kegler has a complicated relationship with the Bible. As a queer woman who grew up in both conservative Evangelical and progressive Protestant churches, she knows too well how Scripture can be used to wound and exclude. And yet, the stories of Scripture continue to captivate and inspire her--both as a person of faith and as a pastor to a congregation. So she set out to fall in love with the Bible, wrestling with the stories inside, where she met a God who continues to seek us out--appearing again and again as a voice, a presence, and a promise. Whenever we are pushed to the edges, our voices silenced, or our stories dismissed, God goes out after us--seeking us until we are found again. And God is seeking out those whose voices we too quickly silence and dismiss, too. Because God's story is a story of welcome and acceptance for everyone--no exceptions. Kegler shows us that even when we feel like lost and dusty coins--rusted from others' indifference, misspent and misused--God picks up a broom and sweeps every corner of creation to find us.

Book Coins as Cultural Texts in the World of the New Testament

Download or read book Coins as Cultural Texts in the World of the New Testament written by David H. Wenkel and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2016-12-01 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coins have long been a vital part of the discipline of classical studies of the ancient world. However, many scholars have commented that coins have not been adequately integrated into the study of the New Testament. This book provides an interdisciplinary gateway to the study of numismatics for those who are engaged in biblical studies. Wenkel argues that coins from the 1st century were cultural texts with communicative power. He establishes a simple yet comprehensive hermeneutic that defines coins as cultural texts and explains how they might be interpreted today. Once coins are understood to be cultural texts, Wenkel proceeds to explain how these texts can be approached from three angles. First, the world in front of the coin is defined as the audience who initially read and responded to coins as cultural texts. The entire Roman Empire used coins for payment. Second, the world of the coin refers to the coin itself – the combination of inscriptions and images. This combination of inscription and image was used ubiquitously as a tool of propaganda. Third, the world behind the coin refers to the world of power and production behind the coins. This third angle explores the concept of authorship of coins as cultural texts.

Book The Thirty Pieces of Silver

Download or read book The Thirty Pieces of Silver written by Lucia Travaini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Thirty Pieces of Silver: Coin Relics in Medieval and Modern Europe discusses many interconnected topics relating to the most perfidious monetary transaction in history: the betrayal of Jesus by Judas for thirty pieces of silver. According to medieval legend, these coins had existed since the time of Abraham’s father and had been used in many transactions recorded in the Bible. This book documents fifty specimens of coins which were venerated as holy relics in medieval and modern churches and monasteries of Europe, from Valencia to Uppsala. Most of these relics are ancient Greek silver coins in origin mounted in precious reliquaries or used for the distribution of their wax imprints believed to have healing powers. Drawing from a wide range of historical sources, from hagiography to numismatics, this book will appeal to students and academics researching Late Antique, Medieval, and Early Modern History, Theology, as well as all those interested in the function of relics throughout Christendom. The Thirty Pieces of Silver is a study that invites meditation on the highly symbolic and powerful role of money through coins which were the price, value, and measure of Christ and which, despite being the most abject objects, managed to become relics.

Book The Prayer Coin

Download or read book The Prayer Coin written by Elisa Morgan and published by Our Daily Bread Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Take a coin. Toss it in the air. Now call it. Heads? Tails? What if you could choose both sides? Elisa Morgan birthed the "prayer coin" idea as she was struggling in her own prayer life. Should she be blatantly honest about her desires or just leave everything to God and let Him lead? An epiphany came when Elisa noticed how Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane: "Take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done" (Luke 22:42). Jesus Christ begged for relief from the trial He faced, while utterly complying with what He knew the Father's will to be. Honesty and abandon--in the same breath. Elisa discovered that Jesus invites us to both. And the emotional back-and-forth, between full-out honesty and "giving it up" in abandon, actually drew her closer to God. If Jesus--our Savior, Mentor, and Friend--could pray both sides of the prayer coin, could we as well?
