Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe algebraic obstruction theories for realizing an abstract (co)algebra over the mod Steenrod algebra as the (co)homology of a topological space, and for distinguishing between the -homotopy types of different realizations. The theories are expressed in terms of the Quillen cohomology of.

Book Hochschild Cohomology for Algebras

Download or read book Hochschild Cohomology for Algebras written by Sarah J. Witherspoon and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2019-12-10 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a thorough and self-contained introduction to the theory of Hochschild cohomology for algebras and includes many examples and exercises. The book then explores Hochschild cohomology as a Gerstenhaber algebra in detail, the notions of smoothness and duality, algebraic deformation theory, infinity structures, support varieties, and connections to Hopf algebra cohomology. Useful homological algebra background is provided in an appendix. The book is designed both as an introduction for advanced graduate students and as a resource for mathematicians who use Hochschild cohomology in their work.

Book Homology Cohomology And Sheaf Cohomology For Algebraic Topology Algebraic Geometry And Differential Geometry

Download or read book Homology Cohomology And Sheaf Cohomology For Algebraic Topology Algebraic Geometry And Differential Geometry written by Jean H Gallier and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-01-19 with total page 799 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For more than thirty years the senior author has been trying to learn algebraic geometry. In the process he discovered that many of the classic textbooks in algebraic geometry require substantial knowledge of cohomology, homological algebra, and sheaf theory. In an attempt to demystify these abstract concepts and facilitate understanding for a new generation of mathematicians, he along with co-author wrote this book for an audience who is familiar with basic concepts of linear and abstract algebra, but who never has had any exposure to the algebraic geometry or homological algebra. As such this book consists of two parts. The first part gives a crash-course on the homological and cohomological aspects of algebraic topology, with a bias in favor of cohomology. The second part is devoted to presheaves, sheaves, Cech cohomology, derived functors, sheaf cohomology, and spectral sequences. All important concepts are intuitively motivated and the associated proofs of the quintessential theorems are presented in detail rarely found in the standard texts.

Book Cohomology Rings of Finite Groups

Download or read book Cohomology Rings of Finite Groups written by Jon Carlson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-10-31 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text offers comprehensive coverage of group cohomology, from introductory material through the most recent developments in the field. The primary motivation for this book is the interaction of group cohomology with representation theory, especially the geometry of support varieties over cohomology rings. The appendices, comprising computer calculations of the mod-2 cohomology rings of the groups whose orders divide 64, provide information useful for further developments in the field. A unique feature of this text is that it includes the concepts that are the subject of the calculations and are the source of some of the motivating conjectures for the computations. The programs for computing the cohomology rings were executed in the MAGMA computer algebra language. The text is a valuable resource for researchers in group cohomology and related disciplines. In addition, the book could be used as the text for an advanced graduate class or a graduate seminar.

Book Cohomology of Infinite Dimensional Lie Algebras

Download or read book Cohomology of Infinite Dimensional Lie Algebras written by D.B. Fuks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no question that the cohomology of infinite dimensional Lie algebras deserves a brief and separate mono graph. This subject is not cover~d by any of the tradition al branches of mathematics and is characterized by relative ly elementary proofs and varied application. Moreover, the subject matter is widely scattered in various research papers or exists only in verbal form. The theory of infinite-dimensional Lie algebras differs markedly from the theory of finite-dimensional Lie algebras in that the latter possesses powerful classification theo rems, which usually allow one to "recognize" any finite dimensional Lie algebra (over the field of complex or real numbers), i.e., find it in some list. There are classifica tion theorems in the theory of infinite-dimensional Lie al gebras as well, but they are encumbered by strong restric tions of a technical character. These theorems are useful mainly because they yield a considerable supply of interest ing examples. We begin with a list of such examples, and further direct our main efforts to their study.

Book Dialgebras and Related Operads

Download or read book Dialgebras and Related Operads written by J.-L. Loday and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-07-01 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main object of study of these four papers is the notion of associative dialgebras which are algebras equipped with two associative operations satisfying some more relations of the associative type. This notion is studied from a) the homological point of view: construction of the (co)homology theory with trivial coefficients and general coefficients, b) the operadic point of view: determination of the dual operad, that is the dendriform dialgebras which are strongly related with the planar binary trees, c) the algebraic point of view: Hopf structure and Milnor-Moore type theorem.

Book Tensor Categories

Download or read book Tensor Categories written by Pavel Etingof and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2016-08-05 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is there a vector space whose dimension is the golden ratio? Of course not—the golden ratio is not an integer! But this can happen for generalizations of vector spaces—objects of a tensor category. The theory of tensor categories is a relatively new field of mathematics that generalizes the theory of group representations. It has deep connections with many other fields, including representation theory, Hopf algebras, operator algebras, low-dimensional topology (in particular, knot theory), homotopy theory, quantum mechanics and field theory, quantum computation, theory of motives, etc. This book gives a systematic introduction to this theory and a review of its applications. While giving a detailed overview of general tensor categories, it focuses especially on the theory of finite tensor categories and fusion categories (in particular, braided and modular ones), and discusses the main results about them with proofs. In particular, it shows how the main properties of finite-dimensional Hopf algebras may be derived from the theory of tensor categories. Many important results are presented as a sequence of exercises, which makes the book valuable for students and suitable for graduate courses. Many applications, connections to other areas, additional results, and references are discussed at the end of each chapter.

Book A Concise Course in Algebraic Topology

Download or read book A Concise Course in Algebraic Topology written by J. P. May and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1999-09 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Algebraic topology is a basic part of modern mathematics, and some knowledge of this area is indispensable for any advanced work relating to geometry, including topology itself, differential geometry, algebraic geometry, and Lie groups. This book provides a detailed treatment of algebraic topology both for teachers of the subject and for advanced graduate students in mathematics either specializing in this area or continuing on to other fields. J. Peter May's approach reflects the enormous internal developments within algebraic topology over the past several decades, most of which are largely unknown to mathematicians in other fields. But he also retains the classical presentations of various topics where appropriate. Most chapters end with problems that further explore and refine the concepts presented. The final four chapters provide sketches of substantial areas of algebraic topology that are normally omitted from introductory texts, and the book concludes with a list of suggested readings for those interested in delving further into the field.
