Book excerpt: Inhaltsangabe:Introduction: It has now been about a decade and a half since the Internet and the World Wide Web have come to represent a major realm of research in various fields of linguistics. This is of course largely due to the fact that they offer easy access to a massive and unlimited amount of language data, which do not have to be transcribed in arduous ways as is the case with speech recordings. However, alongside this major cause of attraction, and despite the overall dominance of English, it is also the multilingual nature of the Internet which has naturally sparked the interest of bilingualism research as well as language contact research. It is the choice of and the switching between the available codes of the users' repertoires which mark a major topic of interest, and which shall be explored in the thesis at hand. The final focus of investigation will be the communicative functions and meanings of the phenomenon called code-switching (CS) as it naturally occurs in a Canadian-Croatian discussion forum. In order to prepare the theoretical ground for the analysis of my own corpus of computer-mediated communication (CMC) data, the first part of this research thesis will define the subject-matter and the origins of research into it, and a general overview of the classic linguistic treatment of the phenomenon will be given. Following, this paper will illustrate the major concepts and approaches relevant to the final purpose of the thesis, and point out potential critique of their assumptions. In order to establish a link between code-switching phenomena in general and their communicative setting in the conducted study, the subsequent chapter will address several issues in computer-mediated communication research. Thereafter a review of renowned studies of code-switching phenomena in computer-mediated communication will be provided. Finally, the Croworld corpus, including its compilation and structure, and the backgrounds of the users involved, will be presented. Book excerpt: This paper reports on the learning experience of Chinese and French students participating in a computer mediated communication (CMC) collaboration conducted in English and supported by Wikispaces, Animoto, and Skype. Several studies have investigated CMC contexts in which at least some participants were native speakers. Here, we address the linguistic and cultural challenges that students face when language code-switching is impossible. Twenty-five French students enrolled in their final semester of an undergraduate program in Sports Management and 40 Chinese students enrolled in their second year of undergraduate program in Business completed individual and group projects related to tourism in Europe based on information gathered through communication in English with their foreign partners. Data from students' written and oral productions were complemented by students' self-reflective evaluations. This study illustrates that mastering new technologies and interacting with an authentic audience motivated student learning. Some students also benefitted from the possibility of improving speaking skills through recording and listening to their own voices. [For full proceedings, see ED565044.].

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled C h i n e s e a n d E n g l i s h C o m p u t e r - m e d i a t e d C o mm u n i c a t i o n i n t h e C o n t e x t o f N e w L i t e r a c y S t u d i e s submitted by L e e K a M a n for the degree of Master of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in October 2002 This thesis investigates aspects of text-based Computer-mediated Communication (CMC) in Hong Kong within the framework of New Literacy Studies (NLS), a theory of literacy which studies how language and literacy are used in social context. The analysis is based on a 70,000-word corpus of email and ICQ messages (composed in Chinese/Cantonese and English). Two concepts of NLS - literacy events, occasions where literacy has a role, and literacy practices, ways of using language and literacy in different contexts, are examined in detail. The study first explores the constitution of a CMC literacy event and proposes that participants, settings, forms of interaction, codes, subjects of discussion, artefacts, and underlying contexts are the basic components. These elements are observed in a case study of a CMC event in a domestic setting. The research further reveals that in CMC events, the relationship between speech and writing is indeterminate since features vary across messages. It is, however, noted that code- mixing plays a prominent role in CMC texts in Hong Kong. The research has also identified seven literacy practices in text-based CMC. It first presents these practices under the topics of shortenings, emoticons, openings and closures, typographical, grammatical, orthographic, and 'coding' practices. It then examines various specific cultural and linguistic CMC textual practices, which include: (i) Cantonese-based shortenings (88 'bye-bye'); (ii) Asian-specific emoticons (>vTextual findings are supported by questionnaire and interview surveys which investigate participants' thoughts and values on their textual practices. Respondents' opinions indicate that practices are not the same in all situations, which reveals the importance of 'context' in CMC. Three categories of CMC context are proposed - contexts of social interaction ('chat' and 'non-chat'), communicative situational contexts, and language-specific contexts, which are associated with subsets of CMC practices according to the nature of the contexts. This characterisation of CMC context demonstrates its compatibility with the theory of NLS. The research suggests that language and literacy researchers and practitioners should recognise the set of new literacy practices in CMC. Subsequent studies in the Chinese context are necessary for a more complete understanding of the impact of CMC language on students' reading and writing habits. From this participant-centered perspective, it contributes to the longstanding theoretical debates in creole studies about the creole continuum. The book will likewise be useful to students of computer-mediated communication, the use and development of non-standardized languages, language ecology, and codeswitching. The central methodological issue in this study is codeswitching in written language, a neglected area of study at the moment since most literature in codeswitching research is based on spoken data. Book excerpt: Code-switching is an inevitable and interesting topic in a multilingual and multicultural educational setting. However, few studies in the United States have been investigated Chinese/English alternation among young students. This qualitative case study examined the code-switching practice among four second-grade Chinese-English bilingual students studying in a weekend Chinese language school. This study brings a new perspective to code-switching between an alphabetic language and a non-alphabetic language. The conversations between students, teachers and among students themselves were audio-recorded. Nine data collection sessions were implemented in class and each session was about two hours. Interpretative analysis was the main data analysis method. Four types of code-switching were found in this study, specifically, students used tag-switching, intra-sentential switching, inter-sentential switching, and borrowing. Five functions of code-switching were observed, declarative/question shift, crutching, translation, clarification/emphasis, and expressive. The research shows that in the case of Chinese American bilingual children's code-switching usage for social identity, desire, expression, and emotion, code-switching functions observed in this Northern California case study are found to be similar to other code-switching populations. This research indicates that students in this Northern California case study code-switched less than other code-switching populations, for example, English-Spanish bilinguals.
