Book Medical Ethics and Etiquette

Download or read book Medical Ethics and Etiquette written by Austin Flint, Jr. and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Medical Ethics and Etiquette: The Code of Ethics Adopted by the American Medical Association By the publication of the Code of Medical Ethics with brief commentaries, the writer of the latter carries out an intention formed many years ago. The publication at the present time, although perhaps appropriate on account of recent occurrences, is due to the fact that hitherto pressing engagements have led to its postponement. The writer had intended that the commentaries should appear without his name, thinking that to take upon himself the office of a commentator might be regarded as an immodest assumption. In not carrying out this intention he has yielded to the judgment of others. He ventures to hope that the volume may be of use by inciting physicians to uphold the code, and also by contributing in some measure to diffuse a popular knowledge of it. How to do that depends very much upon the tact of the lawyer; a client you must have no matter at what cost or how you manage it; and it must be a real, live one. After you have him, to be sure of him, always demand a retainer. Retainers have made many lawyers rich. You can usually do this by telling him it is the rule of your othee; ind insures good faith on his part. Give him a receipt for it, to insure good faith on your part. If you are a young practitioner, it is a good plan to take down on paper all the circumstances connected with the case; then tell him you are verv busy, and, that as the case will not need your immediate attention he had better go home and return in a few days. The point is this: it gives you time to look up the authorities, and impresses the client with the fact that you are the. Book The Journalistic Code of Ethics Vol 26

Download or read book The Journalistic Code of Ethics Vol 26 written by Joseph S. Myers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journalistic Code of Ethics, Vol. 26: A Collection of Codes, Creeds, and Suggestions for the Guidance of Editors and Publishers To my mind there is no occupation in which men engage, not even the so-called learned professions, - law, medicine, and theology, - which demands a higher standard of ethics in its pursuit than journalism, and this because of its extraordinary power and opportunities in affecting the public welfare. - Samuel Bowles. Newspaper men do not deny the need and the value of a code of ethics, however much they may differ as to just what it should contain, how it should be formulated, how it should be enforced. Some may believe that an unwritten code with professional opinion behind it will suffice. If the acid test of a profession is its possession of a code of ethics enforced by a strong organization, then journalism is not a profession. More and more, however, newspaper men refer to their vocation as a profession and to themselves as journalists, and more and more they are agitating for a set of rules of conduct. In their publications and in their speeches, newspaper men are discussing ethical questions as they pertain to their own methods. Individual newspapers have set up codes, and newspaper men have written creeds which are in effect codes. Every decent newspaper has a more or less definitely formulated declaration of moral precepts for the members of its staff, but the need is increasingly felt that such shadowy substitute is not enough. Noah Porter said: "That the judgments of men concerning the right and the wrong of particular actions are very largely the products of their circumstances and their education, is too obvious to admit of question." This is pre-eminently true of the practice of journalism. To indicate the trend toward ethical standardization of the newspaper press is the purpose of this paper rather than to argue for the very apparent need. Being frankly and clearly expressed and discussed herein, it but remains to apply those principles to a constantly differing state of facts. Proper exemplification of well-recognized principles offers such convincing proof of sincerity and fair dealing as may reasonably be expected to encourage and develop a reciprocal attitude from others. Only such action on the part of Members of these Associated Bureaus as is in complete harmony with the spirit and the letter of this Code of Ethics and Policies will receive official approval. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Extracts From the Medical Ethics, or a Code of Institutes and Precepts, Adapted to the Professional Conduct of Physicians and Surgeons, in Private or General Practice XV. Some general rules should be adopted by the faculty, in every town, relative to the pecani ary acknowledgments of their patients; and it should be deemed a point of honour to adhere to this rule, with as much steadiness as varying cir cumstances will admit. For it is obvious, that an average fee, as suited to the general rank of pa tients, must be an inadequate gratuity from the rich, who often require attendance not absolutely necessary; and yet too large to be expected from that class of citizens, who would feel a reluctance in calling for assistance, without making some de cent and satisfactory retribution.
