Download or read book Atmospheric Chemistry written by Christine S. Sloane and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1991-03-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws upon the knowledge and experience of modeling experts currently engaged in conducting assessments regarding the predictive strength of atmospheric models. The book covers all of the major important atmospheric areas, including large scale models for ozone depletion and global warming, regional scale models for urban smog (ozone and visibility impairment) and acid rain, as well as accompanying models of cloud processes and biofeedbacks. Atmospheric scientists and regulators should consider this book required reading.

Book Global Atmospheric Chemical Change

Download or read book Global Atmospheric Chemical Change written by C.N. Hewitt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air pollution has historically been viewed as a local or regional scale problem with attention focused on acute episodes such as the sulphur dioxide and smoke smogs of London in the 1950s and 1960s and the photochemical smogs of southern California first recognized by Haagen Smit in the early 1950s. In recent years, however, it has become apparent that human activity has, and still is, changing the chemical composition of the atmosphere on a global scale. The composition of the atmosphere has seen enormous changes due to natural processes since the formation of the planet. Data obtained from air bubbles trapped in polar ice are beginning to reveal information about these changes over the last tens of thousands of years and geochemical models of the evolution of the Earth give us insights into the changes over much longer periods of time. Perhaps the crucial differences between these natural changes and those now being induced by man are their rel ative rates of change. The magnitude of present day fluxes of some com pounds released as air pollutants is in some cases much larger than those arising naturally. In other cases, for example carbon dioxide, the an thropogenic emission rates are small compared with that of the natural cycle, but the kinetics of the system are such that the steady state concent rations of the compounds in the atmosphere are now being perturbed.

Book Sounding the Troposphere from Space

Download or read book Sounding the Troposphere from Space written by Peter Borrell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-02-02 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now possible to determine concentrations of trace constituents and pollutants in the lower atmosphere from space, a development which heralds a new era for tropospheric chemistry. The authors describe how to develop and validate methods for determining tropospheric trace constituents from satellite data, to encourage the use of these data by atmospheric chemists, and to explore the undoubted synergism which will develop between satellite and ground-based measurements, and will eventually give rise to a permanent observation system for the troposphere. The book comprises several comprehensive overviews, prepared by acknowledged experts in the field, together with a series of individual reports from investigators whose work represents the cutting edge of the subject. A variety of results, giving global distributions of several species and their modelling are reported. Most results stem from ESA satellite data, but there is also an account of the North American work in this field which has mainly concentrated on global distributions of ozone. It is fair to say that the field, as it develops, will revolutionize the way in which atmospheric chemistry is done. This timely book provides a good introduction for anyone with an interest in the future of the troposphere.

Book Air Quality Management in the United States

Download or read book Air Quality Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2004-08-30 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Managing the nation's air quality is a complex undertaking, involving tens of thousands of people in regulating thousands of pollution sources. The authors identify what has worked and what has not, and they offer wide-ranging recommendations for setting future priorities, making difficult choices, and increasing innovation. This new book explores how to better integrate scientific advances and new technologies into the air quality management system. The volume reviews the three-decade history of governmental efforts toward cleaner air, discussing how air quality standards are set and results measured, the design and implementation of control strategies, regulatory processes and procedures, special issues with mobile pollution sources, and more. The book looks at efforts to spur social and behavioral changes that affect air quality, the effectiveness of market-based instruments for air quality regulation, and many other aspects of the issue. Rich in technical detail, this book will be of interest to all those engaged in air quality management: scientists, engineers, industrial managers, law makers, regulators, health officials, clean-air advocates, and concerned citizens.

Book Climate Change and Environmental Issues

Download or read book Climate Change and Environmental Issues written by Narayan Singh and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2016-06-01 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change is one of the greatest challenges of the 21st century. Climate is changing across our planet, largely, as a result of human activities. The indicators of climate change include physical responses such as changes in the surface temperature, atmospheric water vapour, severe climatic events, melting of glaciers, and a rise in sea level. Mountain ecosystems being exceptionally fragile are prone to both natural and anthropogenic drivers of change, which ranges from volcanic and seismic events and flooding to global climate change and of vegetation and soils, resulting from inappropriate agricultural and forestry practices and extractive industries. Environmental issues directly affect agricultural productivity, famine and pandemics, health, economy, and ecology. In this light, environmental protection, the practice of protecting the environment on individual, community, organizational, or governmental level, assumes a significant role. This book provides a holistic coverage of the basics of climate change, changes in biodiversity, phytosociological changes, and thus proposes a comprehensive set of solutions to resolve various issues related to environment and climate change. This book would be beneficial for researchers, policy makers, academicians, environmentalists, and university students.
