Book Evaluation of a Dry Surface Treatment Technique for Pigment Coating of Printing Papers

Download or read book Evaluation of a Dry Surface Treatment Technique for Pigment Coating of Printing Papers written by Juha Maijala and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of paper coating is to improve the performance of paper in printing and, consequently, the final quality of printed products. In dry surface treatment a dry coating powder is electrostatically applied onto the paper and subsequently fixed onto its surface using temerature and pressure. In conventional coating, a water-based coating dispersion is metered to a desired coat weight and followed by intense drying. Since with dry surface treatment no water is introduced to the coating process, no drying of the paper web is needed, the required space is smaller and no defects due to re-watering of the paper arise. Thus, dry surface treatment provides several improvements compared to the conventional coating process. In this work the applicability of dry surface treatment in producing pigment-coated paper for printing purposes is studied. The focus was set on electrostatic phenomena in the deposition process, on the properties and characteristics of the coating powders and ont he process behaviour with the aim of producing coating layer structures similar to those produced with conventional surface treatment techniques. To provide a basis for the study, a review of surface treatment techniques is given. This supports the discussion based on the experiments to coat paper using dry surface treatment. First, the focus is on electrostatic deposition of coating particles. This inludes analyzing the characteristics of particle charging and particle behaviour in electric fields. Then, formation of coating structures inr elation to coating powder preparation methods is studied. Furthermore, the formation of coating structure with freeze-driedd coating powders and interactions between the printing ink and the coating layer are investigated in detail. Finally, powder fixation was studied in relation to heat transfer during varied pressure and temperature pulses. (...).

Book Blueprint to cyanotypes Exploring a historical alternative photographic process

Download or read book Blueprint to cyanotypes Exploring a historical alternative photographic process written by Malin Fabbri and published by AlternativePhotography.com. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An excellent beginners’ guide to cyanotypes – all you need to get started, and some goodies for more advanced cyanotypers too. About the book The cyanotype is often the first alternative process that people try. It is relatively easy and safe enough to nurture a child’s interest in photography. It can also be seen as a gateway to further exploration of historic photographic methods. In addition, it gives experienced photographers and artists a great excuse to take their eyes off the computer screen and get their hands dirty. Blueprint to cyanotypes is all you will need to get started with cyanotypes. It offers the beginner a step-by-step guide, from choosing material to making the final print. It is full of information and tips. Even the experienced cyanotypist may learn a thing or two. Blueprint to cyanotypes is published by AlternativePhotography.com – a website and information center dedicated to alternative photographic processes. From Malin Fabbri, the author: Why a book on cyanotypes? Of all the alternative processes the cyanotype is the one closest to my heart. I made my first cyanotype in 1999. I was intrigued by the blue images and wanted to test the cyanotype process to see what it had to offer. I bought chemicals and spent an evening coating paper and cloth. The results of the next day’s printing surprised me. Although the alchemy of the darkroom had always captivated me, developing a print in the sun was like a liberation. One of the things I found most refreshing about the process was the unpredictability of the results. Some of my best prints were the product of ‘happy accidents’. The developing process is straightforward. The chemicals are cheap, and most of the other items used can be found around the house. Pre-coated paper is available, but one of the benefits of working with cyanotypes is the great flexibility of material and paper available to you. Cyanotypes print on anything made of natural fibre. Cotton, linen, silk, handmade paper, watercolor paper and rags are just number of alternatives. Some artists even print on wood. So, if you want to explore a fun alternative photographic process or seriously want to experiment with producing unique fine art, make a cyanotype.

Book Surface Phenomena and Fine Particles in Water Based Coatings and Printing Technology

Download or read book Surface Phenomena and Fine Particles in Water Based Coatings and Printing Technology written by F.J. Micale and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'IHE CURRENT STATE OF 'IHE AID' of several aspects of water-based coatings and printing processes is presented in this voltnne. It documents the proceedings of the Intemationl Syrrposium on Surface RJ. enornena and Fine Particles in Water-Based Coatings and Printing Teclmology sponsored by the Fine Particle Society (FPS). '!his meeting was held in Boston, Massachusetts, August 21-25, 1989. '!he syrrp:>sium upon which this voltnne is based was organized in six sessions errphasizing various basic and applied areas of research on water-based technology. Major topics discussed involve surface phenomena in coatings, printing defects and their remedies, surface tension effects in water-based coatings and printing inks, surface energies of polymer substrates, wettability, aqueous polymeric film coating of pharmaceuticals, flexographic and gravure printing processes, characterization of coating materials, pigment dispersion, wax emulsions for surface modifications, and the role of polymer in particle/surface deposition. '!his edition includes the twenty four selected papers presented in the syrrp:>sium. '!hese papers are divided in three broad categories: (1) Water-Based Inks and Coatings, (2) Emulsions and Adhesion in Coatings, and (3) Characterization of Coating and Printing Materials. Several types of coating and printing on different substrates using water-based fonnulations with special reference to surface phenomena and particle technology are described in these sections. This proceedings vo1tnne includes discussions of various processes occuring at llIOlecular, microscopic, and macroscopic levels in water-based coatings and printing processes.
