Book Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters

Download or read book Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters written by Leo H. Holthuijsen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-02-04 with total page 9 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Waves in Oceanic and Coastal Waters describes the observation, analysis and prediction of wind-generated waves in the open ocean, in shelf seas, and in coastal regions with islands, channels, tidal flats and inlets, estuaries, fjords and lagoons. Most of this richly illustrated book is devoted to the physical aspects of waves. After introducing observation techniques for waves, both at sea and from space, the book defines the parameters that characterise waves. Using basic statistical and physical concepts, the author discusses the prediction of waves in oceanic and coastal waters, first in terms of generalised observations, and then in terms of the more theoretical framework of the spectral energy balance. He gives the results of established theories and also the direction in which research is developing. The book ends with a description of SWAN (Simulating Waves Nearshore), the preferred computer model of the engineering community for predicting waves in coastal waters.

Book Ecology of Baltic Coastal Waters

Download or read book Ecology of Baltic Coastal Waters written by Ulrich Schiewer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-12 with total page 443 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first comprehensive overview of the enormous ecological diversity of Baltic coastal ecosystems is presented in this volume provides. A short introduction into the Baltic Sea as a reference ecosystem is followed by detailed descriptions of the characteristics of coastal ecosystems. Ecological case studies from four regions illustrate the different reactions of these ecosystems to natural and anthropogenic influences.

Book Mixing in Inland and Coastal Waters

Download or read book Mixing in Inland and Coastal Waters written by Hugo B. Fischer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an outgrowth of research contributions and teaching experiences by all the authors in applying modern fluid mechanics to problems of pollutant transport and mixing in the water environment. It should be suitable for use in first year graduate level courses for engineering and science students, although more material is contained than can reasonably be taught in a one-year course, and most instructors will probably wish to cover only selected potions. The book should also be useful as a reference for practicing hydraulic and environmental engineers, as well as anyone involved in engineering studies for disposal of wastes into the environment. The practicing consulting or design engineer will find a thorough explanation of the fundamental processes, as well as many references to the current technical literature, the student should gain a deep enough understanding of basics to be able to read with understanding the future technical literature evolving in this evolving field.

Book Coastal Waters of the World

Download or read book Coastal Waters of the World written by Don Hinrichsen and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2013-03-19 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nearly 60% of the world's population lives and works within 100 miles of a coast, and even those who don't are connected to the world's oceans through an intricate drainage of rivers and streams. Ultimately the whole of humankind is coastal. Coastal Waters of the World is a comprehensive reference source on the state of the world's coastal areas. It focuses on the tremendous pressures facing coastal areas and the management systems and strategies needed to cope with them. Don Hinrichsen explores the origins and implications of three related issues: the overwhelming threats to our coastal resources and seas from population and pollution; the destruction of critical resources through unsustainable economic activity; and the inability of governments to craft and implement rational coastal management plans. Introductory chapters present a concise summary of our coastal problems, including coastal habitat degradation and the fisheries crisis, along with a discussion of better management options. Three case studies of successful coastal governance focus on some of the problems and bring to life potential solutions. Following that are regional profiles that provide detailed information on the main population, resource, and management challenges facing each of the world's thirteen major coastal waters and seas. The profiles are presented in a standard format to allow for ease of comparison between regions, and accessibility of information. The book ends with a realistic and practical agenda for action that can be implemented immediately. Safeguarding these complex, interlinked ecosystems is humanity's most challenging management job. Coastal Waters of the World will help raise our awareness of coastal area concerns and provide a constructive contribution to the ongoing debate over how to manage these ever-changing areas, both for ourselves and for future generations. It will serve as a valuable reference tool and an up-to-date resource for policymakers, management specialists, and students interested in sustainable coastal governance.

Book Ecology and Management of Coastal Waters

Download or read book Ecology and Management of Coastal Waters written by Gilbert Barnabe and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-10-02 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development and ecology of coastal waters is an increasingly important topic and one which touches a wide range of areas including oceanography, hydrology, biology, ecology, fisheries science, aquaculture, civil engineering, geography, economics, law and the social sciences. This book provides a balanced overview allowing the reader to understand exactly what is at stake in the development and management of coastal waters. There is no other book currently available which provides such an overview of this important area. Divided into three parts, the first part provides the background knowledge necessary for an understanding of the physical, chemical and biological phenomena of coastal waters. Part 2 looks at marine ecology from something other than the traditional view of placing organisms at the centre of the problem and considering them in relation to other organisms and environments, instead the authors show how it is possible with marine ecosystems in which the biological, physical and chemical components are equally important when defining an entire system. Finally an exhaustive review of the available technology for various types of development is provided. All in all, this book constitutes a succint and up-to-date summary of the functions of coastal ecosystems which should be read by all those active in, and with an interest in, the management and development of coastal seas.

Book Sediment Transport in Coastal Waters

Download or read book Sediment Transport in Coastal Waters written by Sylvain Ouillon and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-04-11 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The interface of 440,000 km long coastline in the world is subject to global change, with an increasing human pressure (land use, buildings, sand mining, dredging) and increasing population. Improving our knowledge on involved mechanisms and sediment transport processes, monitoring the evolution of sedimentary stocks and anticipating changes in littoral and coastal zones is essential for this purpose. The special issue of Water on “Sediment transport in coastal waters” gathers thirteen papers which introduce the current revolution in the scientific research related to coastal and littoral hydrosedimentary dynamics, and reflect the diversity of concerns on which research in coastal sediment transport is based, and current trends — topics and preferred methods — to address them.
