Significant elements of the encyclopedia include recent developments in paleoclimate modeling, paleo-ocean circulation, as well as the influence of geological processes and biological feedbacks on global climate change. The encyclopedia gives the reader an entry point into the literature on these and many other groundbreaking topics.

Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book The BC Coast Explorer Volume 1

Download or read book The BC Coast Explorer Volume 1 written by John Kimantas and published by Wild Coast Publishing. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some places in this world are still wild, remote and untouched. The outer coast of Vancouver island is one such remarkable place. Author and explorer John Kimantas takes you through this phenomenal stretch of coastline, both by foot and by water, in unparalleled detail. It includes the type of detail that made his first series of guide books, the Wild Coast series, the quintessential resource for information on the most remote locations on the BC coast. This is the heir to that series, updated to include changes such as the Maa-nulth Treaty, the initiatives of the BC Marine Trails Network and other political, environmental and social changes that are continuing to shape these lands. Through maps, photography and description, The BC Coast Explorer series provides the building blocks for the adventure of a lifetime. By foot or paddle, this volume will take you to places rarely seen and yet too beautiful to miss. Covered in detail, feature by feature, are north Vancouver Island and Cape Scott, Brooks Peninsula and all five West Coast Sounds: Quatsino, Kyuquot, Nootka, Clayoquot and Barkley sounds. Included are launches, points of interest, campsites and all the necessary details to get you there. The toughest part will be deciding where to go.

Book Artificial Structures and Shorelines

Download or read book Artificial Structures and Shorelines written by H. Jesse Walker and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 700 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is the result of an initiative of the Commission on the Coastal Environment of the International Geographical Union. The initial concept from which the plan has proceeded was presented at the 24th International Geographical Congress in Japan in 1980. AUTHORSHIP AND COVERAGE All of the articles in this volume have been written by specialists familiar with the coastal segment discussed. Nearly all have been prepared by citizens of the country (and, for that matter, even each subregion) considered. In the case of exceptions (e.g. Suriname), the authors have conducted fieldwork on the coast of the country they treat. In order to preserve the "on-the-spot" integrity of the volume, it was decided not to fill in the blanks along the world's coastline with library researched chapters. Thus, coverage is variable. Nearly every coastal country in Europe is represented whereas for Africa and South America there are major gaps. In addition, there are 2 instances of overlap. In the case of England (with a shoreline of nearly 3,000 km) a complementary chapter on Lincolnshire (with a shoreline of only 155 km) is included. The other case is the general article on the Baltic Coast of the USSR which is supported by chapters on Estonia and Lithuania.

Book Coastal Environments and Global Change

Download or read book Coastal Environments and Global Change written by Gerd Masselink and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 1147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coastal zone is one of the most dynamic environments on our planet and is much affected by global change, especially sea-level rise. Coastal environments harbour valuable ecosystems, but they are also hugely important from a societal point of view. This book, which draws on the expertise of 21 leading international coastal scientists, represents an up-to-date account of coastal environments and past, present and future impacts of global change. The first chapter of the book outlines key principles that underpin coastal systems and their behaviour. This is followed by a discussion of key processes, including sea level change, sedimentation, storms, waves and tides, that drive coastal change. The main part of the book consists of a discussion of the main coastal environments (beaches, dunes, barriers, salt marshes, tidal flats, estuaries, coral reefs, deltas, rocky and glaciated coasts and coastal groundwater), and how these are affected by global change. The final chapter highlights strategies for coping with coastal change. Readership: final year undergraduate and postgraduate-level students on coastal courses in a wide range subjects, including geography, environmental management, geology, oceanography and coastal/civil engineering. The book will also be a valuable resource for researchers and applied scientists dealing with coastal environments.
