On the other hand, I felt that, in the national interest, there was great need for some responsible scientific worker in Fuel Technology to review the various aspects of the Coal Question as it stands today. And as much new information had come to my knowledge as Chairman Of the British Association Fuel Economy Committee in 1915 - 17, it was hardly possible for me not to accede to the Editor's request. To the public, therefore, he offers no apology. But his brethren in science will in courtesy consider how hard a thing it is to treat a large subject in few words; to reduce to reasonable limits a theme of infinite details, which has been pondered long, postponed from year to year, and finally accomplished amid the multiplying avocations of a professional life. To them the only merit it can claim will seem but small, - the presentation of a few results of original research and the expression of independent opinions upon matters of common interest. In explanation, it is necessary only to add, that the sketches were all made upon the ground and drawn on wood by the author, to preserve with accuracy those points of interest to his own mind which he desires to illustrate in the text, and upon this their whole value as illustrations of truth depends; as works of art they are nothing. In three instances (Figs. 7, 17, 18) ho has copied drawings which have been given to the public by others; in one other instance (§ 31) he has, after some hesitation, given data transmitted through a private letter of an old date, without previously obtaining the permission of its author. With these exceptions, he believes his book to be free from actual plagiarisms. It must happen, however, that out of a mass of materials brought together under every variety of circumstances, through nearly twenty years of observation, even the small selection here made must contain many which are due to the labors of others, and bestowed in friendship or business upon the author. He finds it of course impossible to do justice to this interchange of thought and work; but wherever important contributions to science could be identified with those who made them, he has done it, and for the rest can only thank friends of the past and present time in general but respectful and affectionate terms. The editors and authors have attempted in this volume to present the most current work on the science and technology of coal and coal utilization. Serious disagreement exists on several key issues such as carbon dioxide release and acid rain. At the same time, however, coal is the world's most abundant fossil fuel and will have to be used to supply the world's energy needs for the next several decades. The 1979 National Research Council Report, "En ergy in Transition: 1985-2010," has estimated that the United States alone may go from a 1979 coal consumption of 14 QUADS per annum (approximately 750 million tons per year) to approximately 40-50 QUADS per annum (approximately 2 billion tons per year) by the year 2010. If this scale of coal utilization is to become a reality, a significant level of research and development will be necessary to establish advanced process technologies and to improve related areas such as materials and instrumentation. The editors hope that this volume will allow a technically educated person to become aware of the several aspects of coal utilization, from characterization of coal itself to the processes of coal utilization. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Coal: Its Composition, Analysis, Utilization and Valuation The data and descriptive matter given herein, are largely based upon private notes and upon information and material scattered through text-books, technical bulletins, and in original papers in technical and scientific journals. Much of this data is either inaccessible or in such a form as not to be readily applied or interpreted and hence is not likely to be utilized by those who have the most active interest in coal. In the preparation and arrangement of the material, three distinct classes of readers have been to a certain extent kept in mind: (1) The mechanical and power plant engineer; (2) The chemical engineer and chemist; (3) The non-technically trained business man and operator who has to do with the buying and selling of the coal. In including data which might be of interest and value to these different groups of readers a portion of the material is necessarily elementary for some and a portion is correspondingly technical for others. Good advice to each reader is to select that which may be of interest and use, and to pass over any discussion or data which may appear too elementary or too technical for his needs. To the technical man who is familiar with much of the data and many of the formulas given, it may appear that many of the simpler illustrations and details might perhaps just as well have been omitted. However, it is the writer's experience that specific formulas and specific data are not, as a rule, likely to be given too much in detail to suit the occasional user, who may have neither the time nor the inclination to elaborate the formula or to check up the data.
