This multi-year project will provide industry with the scientific underpinnings required to move new biofuels and advanced engine systems to market faster while identifying and addressing barriers to their commercialization. This project's ambitious, first-of-its-kind approach simultaneously tackles fuel and engine innovation to co-optimize performance of both elements and provide dramatic and rapid cuts in fuel use and emissions.

The Department of Energy (DOE) Co-Optimization of Fuels & Engines (Co-Optima) initiative is bringing together top scientists, engineers, and analysts from nine national laboratories with more than 20 university and industry partners across the country to investigate fuels and engines as dynamic design variables that can work together to boost efficiency and performance, while minimizing emissions. Applications include the entire on-road fleet, from light-duty (LD) passenger cars to heavy-duty (HD) freight trucks. The objective scientific outcomes of this initiative will provide American industry and policymakers with the knowledge, data, and tools needed to decide which changes could prove most viable and beneficial for drivers, businesses, and the environment. Potential benefits include dramatic improvements in vehicle fuel economy and increases in the use of domestically sourced fuel for transportation, in turn creating new U.S. jobs and keeping energy dollars in the United States, while reducing emissions and costs for consumers and commercial operators at the pump.

Book excerpt: The Co-Optimization of Fuels and Engines (Co-Optima) initiative is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) effort funded by both the Vehicle and Bioenergy Technology Offices. The overall goal of the effort is to identify the combinations of fuel properties and engine characteristics that maximize efficiency, independent of production pathway or fuel composition, and accelerate commercialization of these technologies. Multiple research efforts are underway focused on both spark-ignition and compression-ignition strategies applicable across the entire light, medium, and heavy-duty fleet. A key objective of Co-Optima's research is to identify new blendstocks that enhance current petroleum blending components, increase blendstock diversity, and provide refiners with increased flexibility to blend fuels with the key properties required to optimize advanced internal combustion engines. In addition to fuels and engines R&D, the initiative is guided by analyses assessing the near-term commercial feasibility of new blendstocks based on economics, environmental performance, compatibility, and large-scale production viability. This talk will provide an overview of the Co-Optima effort.

Book excerpt: The development of advanced engines has significant potential advantages in reduced aftertreatment costs for air pollutant emission control, and just as importantly for efficiency improvements and associated greenhouse gas emission reductions. There are significant opportunities to leverage fuel properties to create more optimal engine designs for both advanced spark-ignition and compression-ignition combustion strategies. The fact that biofuel blendstocks offer a potentially low-carbon approach to fuel production, leads to the idea of optimizing the entire fuel production-utilization value chain as a system from the standpoint of life cycle greenhouse gas emissions. This is a difficult challenge that has yet to be realized. This presentation will discuss the relationship between chemical structure and critical fuel properties for more efficient combustion, survey the properties of a range of biofuels that may be produced in the future, and describe the ongoing challenges of fuel-engine co-optimization.

Book excerpt: An efficient simulation framework for co-optimization of design and control is fundamental in the development phase of hybrid electric vehicles to achieve the best system- level improvements of energy efficiency and emissions. Coordination schemes for co- optimization have been widely investigated in the literature, but only for a limited number and nature of design and control variables. In this study a decomposition-based coordination scheme capable to handle multi-time scale, time variant and time invariant (discrete and continuous) variables with ability to handle each sub-problem with different solver is not only demonstrated but also compared with simultaneous-based scheme in terms of optimality of the solution and computational performance. The two coordination schemes are used to co-optimize energy management strategy and components sizing for a series hybrid truck. In addition, multiple objectives are weighted in the cost function: fuel consumption, battery size, and tailpipe pollutant emissions. Results show that the simultaneous scheme is computationally less expensive for simple problems, but it becomes computationally inefficient with increasing problem complexity, with the additional drawback of not being able to handle integer-valued dynamic variables. On the other hand, the decomposition-based scheme can solve such problems, but with a more complex problem formulation. Results show that the decomposition-based scheme has not only 14% improvement in computational performance, but the optimality of the solution is also comparable with simultaneous-based scheme. Hence, as compared to the dynamic optimization, co-optimization yields up to 3.7% improvement in the average genset efficiency operation. Moreover, the fuel consumption for dynamic optimization was 2.5 kg which is reduced to 1.6 kg with co-optimization and was further reduced to 1.5 by adding engine on off control.

However, in support of this, we are pursuing a systematic study of blendstocks to identify a broad range of feasible options, with the objective of identifying blendstocks that can provide target ranges of key fuel properties, identifying trade-offs on consistent and comprehensive basis, and sharing information with stakeholders.

Book excerpt: Early in fiscal year 2016 (FY16), a fuel efficiency 'merit function' was developed to provide a simple tool to evaluate the potential thermal efficiency benefits of various fuels when multiple fuel properties or performance metrics are changing simultaneously. It has also proven to be useful for evaluating various fuel candidates and provides a useful framework for capturing and summarizing results from multiple projects within the Co-Optima Fuel Properties and Advanced Engine Development research portfolios. The objective of this report is to collect pertinent research results from FY16 and the first half of FY17, and to integrate them into an improved merit function.
