Book Closed loop Control of Flow induced Cavity Oscillations

Download or read book Closed loop Control of Flow induced Cavity Oscillations written by Qi Song and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Flow-induced cavity oscillations are a coupled flow-acoustic problem in which the inherent closed-loop system dynamics can lead to large unsteady pressure levels in and around the cavity, resulting in both broadband noise and discrete tones. This problem exists in many practical environments, such as landing gear bays and weapon delivery systems on aircraft, and automobile sunroofs and windows. Researchers in both fluid dynamics and controls have been working on this problem for more than fifty years. This is because not only is the physical nature of this problem rich and complex, but also it has become a standard test bed for controller deign and implementation in flow control. The ultimate goal of this research is to minimize the cavity acoustic tones and the broadband noise level over a range of freestream Mach numbers. Although open-loop and closed-loop control methodologies have been explored extensively in recent years, there are still some issues that need to be studied further. For example, a low-order theoretical model suitable for controller design does not exist. Most recent flow-induced cavity models are based either on Rossiter's semi-expirical formula or a proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) based models. These models cannot be implemented in adaptive controller design directly. In addition, closed-loop control of high subsonic and supersonic flows remains an unexplored area.

This book was released on 2010-09-09 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Symposium brought together many of the world’s experts in fluid mechanics, microfabrication and control theory to discover the synergy that can lead to real advances and perhaps find ways in which collaborative projects may proceed. The high profile meeting was attended by keynote speakers who are leaders in their fields. A key driver was the improvement in flow efficiency to reduce drag, and thereby emissions arising from transport. About 65 papers were presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many plants, vibration and noise problems occur due to fluid flow, which can greatly disrupt smooth plant operations. These flow-related phenomena are called Flow-Induced Vibration. This book explains how and why such vibrations happen and provides hints and tips on how to avoid them in future plant design. The world-leading author team doesn't assume prior knowledge of mathematical methods and provide the reader with information on the basics of modeling. The book includes several practical examples and thorough explanations of the structure, the evaluation method and the mechanisms to aid understanding of flow induced vibration. - Helps ensure smooth plant operations - Explains the structure, evaluation method and mechanisms - Shows how to avoid vibrations in future plant design

Book Machine Learning Control Taming Nonlinear Dynamics and Turbulence

Download or read book Machine Learning Control Taming Nonlinear Dynamics and Turbulence written by Thomas Duriez and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first textbook on a generally applicable control strategy for turbulence and other complex nonlinear systems. The approach of the book employs powerful methods of machine learning for optimal nonlinear control laws. This machine learning control (MLC) is motivated and detailed in Chapters 1 and 2. In Chapter 3, methods of linear control theory are reviewed. In Chapter 4, MLC is shown to reproduce known optimal control laws for linear dynamics (LQR, LQG). In Chapter 5, MLC detects and exploits a strongly nonlinear actuation mechanism of a low-dimensional dynamical system when linear control methods are shown to fail. Experimental control demonstrations from a laminar shear-layer to turbulent boundary-layers are reviewed in Chapter 6, followed by general good practices for experiments in Chapter 7. The book concludes with an outlook on the vast future applications of MLC in Chapter 8. Matlab codes are provided for easy reproducibility of the presented results. The book includes interviews with leading researchers in turbulence control (S. Bagheri, B. Batten, M. Glauser, D. Williams) and machine learning (M. Schoenauer) for a broader perspective. All chapters have exercises and supplemental videos will be available through YouTube.

Book Handbook of Research on Aspects and Applications of Incompressible and Compressible Aerodynamics

This book was released on 2022-06-24 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerodynamics is a science that improves the ability to understand theoretical basics and apply fundamental physics in real-life problems. The study of the motion of air, both externally over an airplane wing and internally over a scramjet engine intake, has acknowledged the significance of studying both incompressible and compressible flow aerodynamics. The Handbook of Research on Aspects and Applications of Incompressible and Compressible Aerodynamics discusses all aspects of aerodynamics from application to theory. It further presents the equations and mathematical models used to describe and characterize flow fields as well as their thermodynamic aspects and applications. Covering topics such as airplane configurations, hypersonic vehicles, and the parametric effect of roughness, this premier reference source is an essential resource for engineers, scientists, students and educators of higher education, military experts, libraries, government officials, researchers, and academicians.

Book Experimental Investigation to Suppress Flow Induced Pressure Oscillations in Open Cavities

Download or read book Experimental Investigation to Suppress Flow Induced Pressure Oscillations in Open Cavities written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High speed tangential flow over open cavities (e.g. aircraft weapon bays) can invoke large pressure oscillations within the cavity. These large oscillations can damage the cavity structure as well as items placed within the cavity. The purpose of this experimental study was to determine the effectiveness of suppressing pressure oscillations by manipulating the shear layer over a two-dimensional cavity with a length-to-depth ratio of two. Two methods, a frequency controllable control surface (fence) and pulsating secondary airflow at the cavity leading edge, were used to manipulate the shear layer. The suppression effectiveness of the fence utilized in both passive and active modes (zero to 120 Hz) was evaluated at six airflow Mach numbers (0.62, 0.76, 0.90, 1.07, 1.28, 1.53). The effectiveness of pulsating secondary airflow was evaluated at one airflow Mach number (1.28) and two flow injection angles (parallel and 45 degrees to the flow) at frequencies ranging from zero to 80 Hz. The effect of steady flow injection was also evaluated at mass flow rates per unit width ranging from 0.323 to 1.27 (lbm/sec/ft). Pressure recordings from within the cavity were made for each test. The effectiveness of a pulsating fence in suppressing the peak mode pressure oscillations proved to be less than that achievable with the fence static. The pulsed secondary flow injection technique was most effective when pulsed at a 45 degree angle to the external flow. Theses.
