Book excerpt: This study is an analysis of the close support artillery battalion in the Light Infantry Division (LID) and it's relationship with the maneuver brigade. There is currently a debate over whether the maneuver brigade should have an organic artillery battalion or the traditional direct support artillery battalion. Recent studies such as ARMY 21 and MOC 96 (Maneuver Oriented Corps) suggest organic artillery battalions are the best organization for the future battlefield. In addition recent experience at the National Training Center indicate in general that maneuver-fire support team relationships have some serious weaknesses. One solution in correcting these problems and organizing units for the future battlefield is organic artillery battalions in the maneuver brigades to include the brigades of the LID. In order to determine if the maneuver brigades should have organic artillery battalions in the LID this paper examines the LID, its unique missions, capabilities and limitations, and its unique light infantry characteristics. Also considered are historical examples of U.S. and German light divisions in WWII, U.S. infantry divisions in Vietnam and the contemporary British light contingency force. The analysis includes an examination of the employment of close support artillery in these historical examples using the fire support doctrinal tenets of adequacy, flexibility and continuity. Technological improvements in field artillery systems are also considered as they relate to a potential need for a change in the artillery battalion-maneuver brigade relationship. Finally, the organic and direct support options are examined using four principles of war: offense, mass, economy of force and unity of effort.

General characteristics of light infantry forces are identified, and an analysis of how light forces operate tactically and how they are supported is presented. In the process, the relationship of the light infantry ethic to its organization is evaluated, and the differences between light infantry and conventional infantry is illuminated. For the purpose of this study, the term conventional infantry refers to modern-day motorized and mechanized infantry and to the large dismounted infantry forces typical of the standard infantry divisions of World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. The study concludes that light infantry is unique and distinct. A light infantry ethic exits and manifests itself in a distinctive tactical style, in a special attitude toward the environment, in a freedom from dependence on fixed lines of communication, and in a strong propensity for self-reliance. The study is based on a historical analysis of 4 light infantry forces employed during and since World War II: The Chindits, in the 1944 Burma campaign against the Japanese; The Chinese communist Forces during the Korean War; British operations in Malaya and Borneo 1948-66; and the First Special Service Force in the mountains of Italy 1942-44. -- p. Book excerpt: This study questions the appropriateness of live-fire artillery training as outlined in the current Field Artillery Mission Training Plans and Department of the Army Pamphlet 350-38, Standards in Weapons Training, in preparing direct support cannon battalions in America's Light Divisions to meet the fire support needs of the infantry brigades they support. In response, this thesis examines how these artillery battalions can address this challenge by determining which artillery fire missions they should execute during live-fire training. Using collective observations and experiences from infantry operations at the Joint Readiness Training Center and the National Training Center, this study develops a base of infantry combat missions and determines fire support tasks, along with the contributing artillery fire missions, that are essential to their successful execution. This thesis compares these results with the fire missions provided in training doctrine. This study concludes by offering a recommended list of specialized fire missions for direct support cannon battalions in U.S. Army Light Divisions to execute during live-fire training to best prepare them to help meet the fire support necessities of the infantry units they support.
