Download or read book Clonal Forestry II written by Mulkh-Raj Ahuja and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Provided here are both underlying theory and recent results concerning the propagation and use of clones in research and in production forestry. State-of-the-art science and case histories treating production, testing, multiplication and deployment of clones are presented. Agroforestry, urban forestry and christmas-tree farming are covered, along with more traditional multiple-use forestry and high-intensity forestry for biomass, wood and fiber production. Clonal forestry is contrasted to the more recent developments of "family forestry", and the classical tree-improvement approach relying on seed-orchards. The history of clonal forestry is covered with reviews of several centuries experience with Sugi in Japan and poplars in Europe. The impacts and use of clones in the contexts of genetic conservation and biodiversity are discussed, as are the laws and regulations affecting clonal production and deployment.

Book Agroforestry with Commercial Clonal Plantations in India

Download or read book Agroforestry with Commercial Clonal Plantations in India written by Piare Lal and published by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI). This book was released on 2020-06-05 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rapid deforestation and depletion of genetic resources have made it essential that avenues be found whereby short-duration trees can be propagated and massed produced. Clonal agroforestry plantations provide this alternative to the use of natural forests. Agroforestry with Commercial Clonal Plantations in India provides complete scientific information on clonal technology applications for selection and cloning of candidate plus trees, development, field testing, final selection and deployment of genetically superior, high yielding and fast-growing clones of important tree species grown under agroforestry system. Clonal agroforestry plantations need to be supported with strong R & D and sound, efficient and timely extension services for the farmers. The book discusses in detail the establishment of modern largescale clonal plant production nurseries and improved silvicultural management of clonal agroforestry plantations of Eucalypts, Poplars, Casuarinas, and other species. Specific recommendations for further advancements in all areas related to tree improvement, development of new superior clones, holistic development of agroforestry and required policy reforms have been also provided.

Book Tree Breeding and Genetics in New Zealand

Download or read book Tree Breeding and Genetics in New Zealand written by C.J.A. Shelbourne and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-08-09 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dothistroma pini changed New Zealand commercial forestry dramatically. Tree breeding became concentrated on a very few species and development of selection methods and breeding strategies changed in response to the new challenges. Tree-Breeding and Genetics in New Zealand provides a critical historical account of the work on provenance research and tree breeding, often with the wisdom of hindsight, and it tracks the development of breeding strategy, especially for P. radiata, Douglas-fir and the most important eucalypt species, E. regnans, E. fastigata and E. nitens. The book is a compendium of abstracts and summaries of all publications and reports on tree improvement in New Zealand since the early 1950s, with added critical comment by the author on much of the work. It is intended for other tree breeders internationally, for interested NZ foresters and for graduate students studying genetics and tree breeding.

Book Somatic Embryogenesis in Woody Plants

Download or read book Somatic Embryogenesis in Woody Plants written by S. Mohan Jain and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1995-05-31 with total page 538 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The quality of human life has been maintained and enhanced for generations by the use of trees and their products. In recent years, ever rising human population growth has put tremendous pressure on trees and tree products; growing awareness of the potential of previously unexploited tree resources and environmental pollution have both accelerated development of new technologies for tree propagation, breeding and improvement. Biotechnology of trees may be the answer to solve the problems which cannot be solved by conventional breeding methods. The combination of biotechnology and conventional methods such as plant propagation and breeding may be a novel approach to improving and multiplying in large number the trees and woody plants. So far, plant tissue culture technology has largely been exploited in the propagation of ornamental plants, especially foliage house plants, by com mercial companies. Generally, tissue culture of woody plants has been recal citrant. However, limited success has been achieved in tissue culture of angiosperm and gymnosperm woody plants. A number of recent reports on somatic embryogenesis in woody plants such as Norway spruce (Picea abies), Loblolly pine (Pinus taeda), Sandalwood (Santalurn album), Citrus, Mango (Mangifera indica), etc. , offer a ray of hope of: a) inexpensive clonal propa gation for large-scale production of plants or "emblings" or "somatic embryo plants", b) protoplast work, c) cryopreservation, d) genetic transformation, and e) artificial or manufactured seed production.
