These phases are shown to correspond to those of “economics imperialism”, the colonisation of topics and fields by mainstream economics, moving successively through as if there were perfectly working markets, as if imperfectly working markets, and these combined plus arbitrary inclusion of other variables. The text draws upon case studies, for example of the putative eighteenth-century consumer revolution, Douglass North, path dependence, and the British coal industry, and through exposing the reduction of economic theory and economic history deployed within them and giving rise to a corresponding reduction in the presence of the social, the historical and political economy.

Political economy, the new institutional economics and constitutional economics broadened attention to an open-ended array of social and political problems. The Economic Approach offers a coherent analytic framework to express the unity underlying the structure of problems appearing over the whole of man's experience and, hence, it opens an opportunity for a unified approach. With respect to the human realm it is, in Dr. Radnitzky's view, "Basically an invitation to straight thinking". What gives economics this "imperialist" power is the fact that its key concepts such as scarcity, competition, opportunities, costs, are applicable to all human phenomena and in fact to all of life. In this sense we may speak of "Universal Economics". Book excerpt: Historians generally—and Marxists in particular—have presented the revolution of 1789 as a bourgeois revolution: one which marked the ascendance of the bourgeois as a class, the defeat of a feudal aristocracy, and the triumph of capitalism. Recent revisionist accounts, however, have raised convincing arguments against the idea of the bourgeois class revolution, and the model on which it is based. In this provocative study, George Comninel surveys existing interpretations of the French Revolution and the methodological issues these raise for historians. He argues that the weaknesses of Marxist scholarship originate in Marx’s own method, which has led historians to fall back on abstract conceptions of the transition from feudalism to capitalism. Comninel reasserts the principles of historical materialism that found their mature expression in Das Kapital; and outlines an interpretation which concludes that, while the revolution unified the nation and centralized the French state, it did not create a capitalist society.
