Download or read book Fits and Faints written by J. B. P. Stephenson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1990 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with one of the major areas of misdiagnosis in medicine today. It has been estimated that as many as thirty percent of children typed as "epileptic" when presenting with loss of consciousness, falls or other paroxysmal episodes have, in fact, non-epileptic attacks. Yet because of the stigma attached to this label, and the frequent side effects of anti-epileptic drugs, it is important that the alternative etiological mechanisms be recognized. The most common of these conditions, the vagalmediated anoxic seizure or fainting fit, is so frequent that it will be encountered by anyone involved in the practice of clinical medicine in its widest sense. These seizures are discussed in depth using original data and extensively reviewing the literature. Many other less common, but nonetheless important, varieties of fits, faints and "funny turns" are self-induced by a Valsalva maneuver, and motor events ranging from day-dreaming to the effects of suffocation and brain swelling. As Jean Aicardi writes in his foreword to this volume: "Over 140 case histories...bring the flavor of real life into an exhaustive, yet highly readable account...This monograph is undoubtedly the most comprehensive source of information available about the various types of anoxic attacks, their clinical and EEG features, mechanisms and prognosis...This is a delightful book that anyone involved in clinical medicine in general and child neurology in particular will enjoy reading."

Their previous book on the subject (1975) became the standard text on this condition. This book reviews the earlier studies, reviews all the literature on this condition in humans and details the many studies that have since been carried out, including studies on drug therapy, the long term prognosis for the condition, pattern sensitivity, video game epilepsy, and convulsions precipitated by other video material. In addition there is advice on procedures to reduce the risk of stimulation from television as well as such factors as the genetics of photosensitivity. This is the most comprehensive text available.

Book Visual Impairment in Children due to Damage to the Brain

Download or read book Visual Impairment in Children due to Damage to the Brain written by Gordon Dutton and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-09-14 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clinics in Developmental Medicine No.186 The increased awareness of cerebral visual impairment in children, combined with improved recognition of its wide ranging manifestations, has led to its recognition as the most common cause of visual impairment in children in the developed world. Yet the subject is in its infancy, with very little published to date. Information on this complex topic has been needed by all disciplines working with disabled children for many years. This ambitious book links the work of authors from many of the major research teams in this field, who have made significant contributions to the literature on the subject of cerebral visual impairment and provide a structured amalgam of the viewpoints of different specialists. The book contains some very novel concepts, which will be of great practical value to those who care for children with visual impairment due to brain injury. Summaries of the more specialist chapters as well as clear diagrams and a glossary have been provided to increase the book’s accessibility to a broader readership. This is an exciting and important field, to which this book makes a major contribution.

Book Brain Damage in the Preterm Infant

Download or read book Brain Damage in the Preterm Infant written by Nigel Paneth and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1994-01-10 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Clinic in Developmental Medicine describes a meticulous survey of germinal matrix/intraventricular haemorrhage in preterm infants. The babies weighed 501-2000g at their birth in three New Jersey counties between 1984 and 1987. They were studied prospectively with cranial ultrasound; the findings were correlated with very detailed pathological examination of the brains of those who died, and with later outcome in the survivors. The numbers studied in this population-based sample were large enough both to test and to generate hypotheses about the causes and consequences of haemorrhage.

Book Feeding the Disabled Child

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter B. Sullivan
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 1996-01-16
  • ISBN : 9781898683087
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Feeding the Disabled Child written by Peter B. Sullivan and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1996-01-16 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disabled children often have feeding difficulty. Choking, food spillage and protracted mealtimes can pose enormous problems for their carers and the accompanying nutritional deficit imposes additional burdens on the affected child. The aetiology of these problems is placed in context by a detailed description of normal feeding development in infants. The often under-recognised nutritional and neurodevelopmental consequences of inadequate nutrient intake together with the respiratory complications and the important problems of constipation and drooling which may accompany oro-motor dysfunction are detailed. The clinical and nutritional assessment and the application of diagnostic imaging techniques in the evaluation of such children are described. The methods of management of these children's problems form the core of this volume and they range from oro-motor therapy to various techniques for enteral feeding. The ethical issues raised by the vigorous intervention needed to improve the nutritional state of severely disabled children is explored, together with the need to provide ongoing psychological support for their carers.

Book An Atlas of Neonatal Brain Sonography

Download or read book An Atlas of Neonatal Brain Sonography written by Paul Govaert and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-08-16 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Atlas covers the entire spectrum of brain disease as studied with ultrasound, illustrated throughout with superb-quality images. It is aimed at neonatologists and radiologists confronted with everyday clinical questions on the neonatal ward. Most newborn brain disorders can be identified with ultrasound; this book will therefore be particularly useful in settings with limited MRI facilities. Prenatal ultrasound specialists will also find it valuable as a postnatal reference in their field of interest. Suggestions for differential diagnosis accompany all the sonographic findings, guiding the clinician in proceeding from an abnormal image to a diagnosis. This second edition of the Atlas has been brought up to date to include the many advances in technique and interpretation that have been made in the past decade. The images have been replaced with new ones of higher quality, and all the line artwork has been standardised and improved. Readership Neonatologists, radiologists, neuroradiologists with an interest in neonatal ultrasound From reviews of the first edition: "This is the most challenging and comprehensive book on this theme, and is an essential reference for clinicians to make a correct diagnosis." —Satoshi Takada, Brain and Development "This can be little doubt that this title represents the definitive work on neonatal cranial ultrasound. The authors have had extensive experience in the use of ultrasound scanning the neonatal brain for almost as long as ultrasound has been used to investigate intracranial pathology on the neonatal unit. Their combined experience is most impressive." —Malcolm Leven, Archives of Disease in Childhood

Novacheck and published by . This book was released on 2020-12-10 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on presentations and discussions of a group of world-renowned experts during a symposium "International Cerebral Palsy Function & Mobility Symposium: Improving Quality of Life for Individuals with Cerebral Palsy through Treatment of Gait Impairment" which was held in Banff, Canada, in December 2019. Clinicians and scientists are paired to discuss the current state of knowledge, working at the border of what we know and what we don't, to advance the care of those with gait impairment due to cerebral palsy. Using authors with different focus, points of view, and ways of thinking, to help establish a framework to guide research efforts for the next five years and to ensure that progress continues to be made to improve the quality of life for those with gait impairments. Disparate topics are unified by a common format of bulleted key points and objectives at the beginning of each chapter and research goals at the end to make the results more rapidly accessible. Focus on gait and mobility in a clear, well-structured format. Enhances debate and exploration of issues. Challenges long-held assumptions to explore the current state of research, testing, and treatment and help direct it meaningfully. The disparate topics are unified by a common format of bulleted key points and objectives at the beginning of each chapter and research goals at the end to make the results more rapidly accessible. Presents objective, but also expert opinion, on how future research could be best directed. Patient goals need more attention, outcomes have stagnated, the details of the underlying neurological impairments are still a mystery, and strong evidence for what we do is desperately needed.
