Book Clinical Lectures on the Diseases of Old Age

Download or read book Clinical Lectures on the Diseases of Old Age written by J. M. Charcot and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the Medical Bulletin: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery, Volume 3 [1881]: This admirable work forms the sixth volume of the "Library of Standard Authors" for the current year. It contains twenty-one chapters by Prof. Charcot, devoted almost exclusively to the consideration of gout and rheumatism, the latter three bearing specially on the value of thermometry in old age. The important subject of gout is handled in a masterly manner by the distinguished pathologist, and it is undoubtedly true that the gouty diathesis underlies not alone the diseases to a great extent of old age in this country, but also those of the middle or mature period of life, and in this respect the value of the book to the general practitioner will be at once apparent. In this connection the concomitant diseases of gout as described are of much interest, and the proper method of study and diagnosis is clearly laid down. Although, as is well understood, the disease is greatly modified by climate and locality, and the volume was written for French territory, a careful perusal of the work will throw much light upon maladies which in many instances are to American practitioners not alone of doubtful origin but difficult to manage. Many obscure cases now ascribed to malarial poisoning can be readily cleared up in the light thrown upon them in this work. Rheumatism, in its varied phases, receives the attention it deserves, the relation between the acute articular form and gout, as also chronic and visceral types, being thoroughly described, in a succinct yet comprehensive manner. The treatment of these disorders is discussed at length, due stress being laid on the value of the older remedies, colchicum, iodine and its combinations, etc., but the now fashionable salicylates are not mentioned. The ten concluding lectures are by Prof. Alfred L. Loomis, of New York, and form an exceedingly interesting and valuable part of the volume. Pneumonia, catarrh of the bronchi, asthma, fatty heart, and the important gastro-intestinal disorders of advanced age are taken up in the author's forcible style, and a vast fund of practical information is condensed in a comparatively few pages. The cerebral senile disorders are also given due prominence, and the troublesome disorders of the bladder and prostate are treated in the concluding chapter, which also refers to ammonææmia, a disorder seen frequently in the old, but about which not much is said in works in general practice. Twenty-eight wood-cuts are introduced in the text, and fifteen lithographic figures close the work, the latter not being up in coloring to those in some recent dermatological treatises, but they are nevertheless equal to the ordinary efforts in this direction. The book is a decided success, and will be of real value to the conscientious physician. The translator, Dr. Leigh H. Hunt, of New York, has done his work faithfully and skillfully.

Book Clinical lectures on mental diseases

Download or read book Clinical lectures on mental diseases written by Thomas Smith Clouston and published by . This book was released on 1884 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "I have been much impressed in teaching students by the fact that you can manifestly interest every member of a large class when you are teaching mental diseases clinically, while you fail to reach some of them by systematic descriptions. Direct appeals to the facts of nature, however fragmentary, make more impression on them than any amount of elaborate description. These considerations led me to publish the following lectures as a text-book for my students in the University of Edinburgh; and I venture to indulge the hope that it will also supply a want which I know many busy practitioners of medicine feel. The two hundred and sixty cases of mental disease which I describe and embody in those lectures may, I hope, assist some of my brethren in the profession in their treatment of a very obscure and troublesome class of diseases. In the selection of those cases, I had in view rather their applicability as good, ordinary types and guides than their rarity or their striking characters. The tendency in publishing mental cases has been to fix on wonderful rather than useful examples. To render the work complete as regards the wants of the American practitioner, Dr. Charles F. Folsom, with the assistance of Hollis R. Bailey, Esq., has added an appendix on the laws of the United States, and of the several States, relating to the custody of the insane"--Preface. Book Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System

Download or read book Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System written by J-M. Charcot and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-12-19 with total page 527 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1991 as part of the Tavistock Classics in the History of Psychiatry series, this re-edition of J-M. Charcot’s Clinical Lectures on Diseases of the Nervous System provides a unique opportunity to examine the work of one of the last century’s most controversial and admired physicians. Widely esteemed for his work in neuropathology, Charcot was also an innovator in the study of hysteria, making important contributions to its study in both women and men. The Clinical Lectures reproduced here are especially important for two key reasons. First, they provide insight into Charcot’s often neglected study of male hysteria, especially traumatic shock, as well as, hysteria among children. Secondly, they give an opportunity to examine his clinical method and style. His presentations and scholarly compilations greatly influenced an entire generation of French and other physicians interested in the study of the ‘unconscious’ during the turn of the century. The introduction, which precedes the work, places the volume in its social, political and historical context. It highlights the key features of the historiographical debate surrounding Charcot, which ranges in scope from the social and intellectual history of the Third Republic through that of early psychoanalysis. It then proceeds with an examination of the key themes – both substantive and methodological – underlying Charcot’s researches, providing both a general entrée into the history of medicine and society in this period, as well as an explication du texte which carefully analyses the lectures themselves.

Book Voices of Reason Voices of Insanity

Download or read book Voices of Reason Voices of Insanity written by Ivan Leudar and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Records of people experiencing verbal hallucinations or 'hearing voices' can be found throughout history. Voices of Reason, Voices of Insanity examines almost 2,800 years of these reports including Socrates, Schreber and Pierre Janet's "Marcelle", to provide a clear understanding of the experience and how it may have changed over the millenia. Through six cases of historical and contemporary voice hearers, Leudar and Thomas demonstrate how the experience has metamorphosed from being a sign of virtue to a sign of insanity, signalling such illnesses as schizophrenia or dissociation. They argue that the experience is interpreted by the voice hearer according to social categories conveyed through language, and is therefore best studied as a matter of language use. Controversially, they conclude that 'hearing voices' is an ordinary human experience which is unfortunately either mystified or pathologised. Voices of Reason, Voices of Insanity offers a fresh perspective on this enigmatic experience and will be of interest to students, researchers and clinicians alike.
