Book Climatological Data for Clouds Over the Globe from Surface Observations 1982 1991

Download or read book Climatological Data for Clouds Over the Globe from Surface Observations 1982 1991 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Routine, surface synoptic weather reports from ships and land stations over the entire globe, for the ten-year period December 1981 through November 1991, were processed for total cloud cover and the frequencies of occurrence of clear sky, precipitation, and sky-obscured due to fog. Archived data, consisting of various annual, seasonal and monthly averages, are provided in grid boxes that are typically 2.5° × 2.5° for land and 5° × 5° for ocean. Day and nighttime averages are also given separately for each season. Several derived quantities, such as interannual variations and annual and diurnal harmonics, are provided as well. This data set incorporates an improved representation of nighttime cloudiness by utilizing only those nighttime observations for which the illuminance due to moonlight exceeds a specified threshold. This reduction in the night-detection bias increases the computed global average total cloud cover by about 2%. The impact on computed diurnal cycles is even greater, particularly over the oceans where is found, in contrast to previous surface-based climatologies, that cloudiness is often greater at night than during the day.

Book Studies Of Cloud Convection And Precipitation Processes Using Satellite Observations

Download or read book Studies Of Cloud Convection And Precipitation Processes Using Satellite Observations written by William B Rossow and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-10-26 with total page 333 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds, convection and precipitation processes are central components of Earth's weather and climate. They are produced by atmospheric motions across a very wide range of space-time scales from local weather to long-term global climate variation. They feedback on these motions by perturbing the heating/cooling that drive the atmospheric circulation. These processes also perturb the oceanic circulation and land surface properties that affect the atmospheric circulation.Because of the coupling of the atmosphere-ocean-land system across all scales by cloud, convection and precipitation processes, studying their behaviors requires measurements in space-time variations across all these scales simultaneously. Satellite constellations with global coverage and high time resolution offer the ideal platforms for such observations. This book summarizes some of the latest research using combinations of various satellite observations to study these processes and to evaluate their representations in global weather and climate models.Included with this publication are downloadable electronic slides and accompanying notes of each lecture for students, teachers, and public speakers around the world to be better able to understand cloud, convection and precipitation processes.

Book Global Atlas of Relative Cloud Cover 1967 70

Download or read book Global Atlas of Relative Cloud Cover 1967 70 written by Donald B. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atlas was prepared from data acquired during the period January 1, 1967, through December 31, 1970. Picture signals were computer processed to prepare hemispheric charts of monthly, seasonal, semiannual, and annual charts of relative cloud cover, in octas, over both the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Similar presentations of tropical cloudiness are included. This atlas is one of the first attempts to use satellite data in the preparation of a climatology of daytime cloudiness over the globe. Book Clouds and Their Climatic Impact

Download or read book Clouds and Their Climatic Impact written by Sylvia C. Sullivan and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-12-11 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Clouds and Their Climatic Impacts Clouds are an influential and complex element of Earth’s climate system. They evolve rapidly in time and exist over small spatial scales, but also affect global radiative balance and large-scale circulations. With more powerful models and extensive observations now at our disposal, the climate impact of clouds is receiving ever more research attention. Clouds and Their Climatic Impacts: Radiation, Circulation, and Precipitation presents an overview of our current understanding on various types of clouds and cloud systems and their multifaceted role in the radiative budget, circulation patterns, and rainfall. Volume highlights include: Interactions of aerosol with both liquid and ice clouds Surface and atmospheric cloud radiative feedbacks and effects Arctic, extratropical, and tropical clouds Cloud-circulation coupling at global, meso, and micro scales Precipitation efficiency, phase, and measurements The role of machine learning in understanding clouds and climate The American Geophysical Union promotes discovery in Earth and space science for the benefit of humanity. Its publications disseminate scientific knowledge and provide resources for researchers, students, and professionals.

Book Observing Weather and Climate from the Ground Up

Download or read book Observing Weather and Climate from the Ground Up written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-01-06 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Detailed weather observations on local and regional levels are essential to a range of needs from forecasting tornadoes to making decisions that affect energy security, public health and safety, transportation, agriculture and all of our economic interests. As technological capabilities have become increasingly affordable, businesses, state and local governments, and individual weather enthusiasts have set up observing systems throughout the United States. However, because there is no national network tying many of these systems together, data collection methods are inconsistent and public accessibility is limited. This book identifies short-term and long-term goals for federal government sponsors and other public and private partners in establishing a coordinated nationwide "network of networks" of weather and climate observations.

Book Aviation and the Global Atmosphere

Download or read book Aviation and the Global Atmosphere written by Joyce E. Penner and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-06-28 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Special Report is the most comprehensive assessment available on the effects of aviation on the global atmosphere. The report considers all the gases and particles emitted by aircraft that modify the chemical properties of the atmosphere, leading to changes in radiative properties and climate change, and modification of the ozone layer, leading to changes in ultraviolet radiation reaching the Earth. This volume provides accurate, unbiased, policy-relevant information and is designed to serve the aviation industry and the expert and policymaking communities.
