Book excerpt: Whereas the implementation of the Tourism Protocol of the Alpine Convention seems far from its completion, the Alpine Convention fourth report on the state of the Alps "Sustainable Tourism in the Alps" is under preparation and it is expected by the end of 2012. One of the main critical challenges that Alpine tourism needs to face in the quest for sustainability is climate change. In recent years several research and cooperation projects focusing on the Alpine region have been dealing with the issue of climate change. In particular the Alpine Space Programme, starting with ClimChAlp (2006-2008), focused on the issue of adaptation to climate change in the following call (2008-2011) through several projects: CLISP, ClimAlpTour, Manfred, AdaptAlp, AlpWaterScarce, ParaMount, PermaNet, SILMAS, AlpFFIRS. These projects led to a capitalization project named C3Alps that recently started. At the same time, the Alpstar project, which also started recently, will focus on climate change mitigation and on making the Alps a carbon neutral environment. The Euro-Mediterranean Centre for Climate Change (CMCC) contributed to several of these Alpine Space projects (ClimChAlp, AdaptAlp, ClimAlpTour and C3Alps). Other non Alpine Space projects have also contributed to this research and cooperation issue, such as CC.ALPS (by CIPRA), KLIWA (by various German and Bavarian institutions), Histalp (Austrian weather service), etc. However, ClimAlpTour is the only project that explicitly focused on tourism. This paper builds on these projects' findings, especially for what concerns the implications for the tourism sector, and on the existing relevant literature.

Decision Making under Deep Uncertainty: From Theory to Practice is divided into four parts. Part I presents five approaches for designing strategic plans under deep uncertainty: Robust Decision Making, Dynamic Adaptive Planning, Dynamic Adaptive Policy Pathways, Info-Gap Decision Theory, and Engineering Options Analysis. Each approach is worked out in terms of its theoretical foundations, methodological steps to follow when using the approach, latest methodological insights, and challenges for improvement. In Part II, applications of each of these approaches are presented. Based on recent case studies, the practical implications of applying each approach are discussed in depth. Part III focuses on using the approaches and tools in real-world contexts, based on insights from real-world cases. Part IV contains conclusions and a synthesis of the lessons that can be drawn for designing, applying, and implementing strategic plans under deep uncertainty, as well as recommendations for future work. The publication of this book has been funded by the Radboud University, the RAND Corporation, Delft University of Technology, and Deltares.

Glavnina knjige obravnava konkretna območja oziroma turistična središča (v celoti 22, slovenski sta dve: Zgornje Posočje in Kranjska Gora) tako s prevladujočim zimskim kot tudi poletnim in celoletnim turizmom: njihove temeljne značilnosti, izzive in priložnosti ter prilagoditvene strategije. Book excerpt: The Alps will experience some of the most pronounced effects of climate change, placing socio-economic stresses on alpine communities, particularly those that rely on seasonal tourism. How stakeholders need to respond to climate change within the Alps has been well documented in the academic literature, with studies focussing on measures to minimise damage on winter ski tourism and from increased natural hazards. Concepts of adaptation measures were tested on stakeholders from the private and public sector within two case study areas within the Swiss Alps, both part of the communes of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Jungfrau Aletsch Bietschorn. A series of semi-structured interviews took place to assess the response of stakeholders from the private and public sectors across the local, regional and national level to the increasing risks of climate change on their economic livelihoods. Adaptation strategies were found to be evenly segmented across the different sectors and levels, but to focus almost entirely on maintaining the status quo of winter tourism, while increasing the market share of summer tourism for the destination.

For each of these two examples, the initial situation, the problem, is explained and subsequently possible solutions or solution approaches are presented and critically questioned. Due to the business context, little attention is paid to political or ethical issues. In 2019 there was almost no other global issue as present and polarising as climate change. Starting with many movements, such as "Fridays for Future", the public was increasingly made aware of the topic. The topic has also become increasingly relevant politically. As early with the 2015 UN Climate Conference, important points were set to reduce global warming. Many areas and economic sectors are already affected by climate change and many will con-tinue to feel the effects of climate change in the future.
