Book excerpt: Clifton has become a great residential suburb of Bristol, but is unusual among suburbs in having a separate and well recorded history as long and as full of human interest as that of the city of which it forms a part. In this book the author has drawn upon his own research over some twenty years and the work of others during roughly the same period to produce the first full study of Clifton?s entire history, from Roman times to the present day, in which he presents much new material in a compelling narrative. The heritage that is Clifton is at last made accessible - to the interested resident as well as to the student of local history. From the Domesday manor to the later medieval village and its owners, the eventual acquisition at the Dissolution of the Monasteries and, in the 17th century, by the Society of Merchant Venturers, a wealth of detail survives. The modern period is richly documented, highlighting not only the burning of the village by Prince Rupert in 1645, but the successive developments, overseen by the Merchant Venturers, and the growth in Lower Clifton of industry, docks, yards, and Hotwell Spa. The speculative building of 1783-93 and the erection of the famous terraces, were followed in the next two centuries by the growth of the residential suburb with its public schools, zoological gardens and Catholic cathedral - not forgetting the Suspension Bridge. This well researched, indeed definitive, work is a major contribution to the history of greater Bristol. For the local resident with any interest in Clifton?s heritage and environment it is essential reading and a source of insight as well as of intriguing information.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revolutionary turmoil in France threatens to cross the English border—and tear apart an increasingly tense marriage—in this “brilliant” gothic thriller (Publishers Weekly, starred review). It is 1792, and Europe is seized by political unrest. In England, Lizzie Fawkes has grown up among Radicals who’ve followed the French Revolution with eager optimism. But Lizzie has recently married John Diner Tredevant, a developer who is heavily invested in Bristol’s housing boom, and he has everything to lose from social upheaval and the prospect of war. As the strain of financial setbacks and the secrets of his past converge upon him, his grip on what he considers his rightful property—including Lizzie—only grows tighter...From an Orange Prize winner and Whitbread Award finalist, this is a novel with a “charged radiance” (The New York Times) that explores romanticism and disillusionment, terror and love, and the dangerous lines between them. “Dunmore knows how to let a narrative move like an arrow in flight...A man rows from Bristol to a glade where he has left his dead wife overnight. He must bury her fast, where no one will find her. From the start, Birdcage Walk has the command of a thriller as we keep company with John Diner Tredevant, an 18th-century property developer building a magnificent terrace in Clifton, high above the Avon Gorge. Lizzie, his second wife, does not know the details of what happened to his first. Nor do we know as much as we might suppose...The novel’s cast is marvelous and vivid.”—The Guardian “Explores the impact of the French Revolution on 1790s England within the context of a gothic romance set in Bristol...[a] magnificently complex villain.”—Kirkus Reviews

Book Secondary Education in England 1870 1902

Download or read book Secondary Education in England 1870 1902 written by Prof John Roach and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2012-10-12 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this comprehensive and extensively researched history, John Roach argues for a reassessment of the relative importance of State regulation and private provision. Although the public schools enjoyed their greatest prestige during this period, in terms of educational reform and progress their importance has been exaggerated. The role of the public school, he suggests, was social rather than academic, and as such their power and influence is to be interpreted principally in relation to the growth of new social elites, the concept of public service and the needs of the empire for a bureaucratic ruling class. Only in the modern progressive movement, launched by Cecil Reddie, and the private provision for young women, was lasting progress made. Even before the 1902 Education Act however the State had spent much time and effort regulating and reforming the old educational endowments, and it is in these initiatives that the foundations for the public provision of secondary educational reform are to be found.

Book The Battle of Zacatecas

Download or read book The Battle of Zacatecas written by and published by . This book was released on 2017-01-30 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The victory of the revolutionary army at Zacatecas devastated the morale of the federal army and planted the unthinkable idea of defeat in the mind of General Victoriano Huerta. Soon afterward he fled Mexico. Personal accounts of this pivotal battle are valuable, fragile documents available in only a handful of university archives. This book consists of English translations of two such documents, diaries of the battle. One account is by General Felipe Angeles, the highest-ranking officer of the Mexican military to oppose the coup d'etat against President Francisco I. Madero. Angeles was a respected academic, the director of the Colegio Militar de Chapultepec, the West Point of Mexico. When General Pancho Villa requested an artillery-general, Angeles volunteered. The successful partnership between the educated Angeles and Villa, the illiterate peasant leader, remains one of history's intriguing mysteries. The second account is by Major Federico Cervantes, an outstanding graduate of the military college, chosen by President Madero to create an air force for Mexico. He was in France preparing for this task when Madero was assassinated. He returned to Mexico to join those who opposed Huerta and became aide to General Angeles. Cervantes is also the author of an exhaustive biography of Felipe Angeles.
