Book The Cliff Walk

Download or read book The Cliff Walk written by Don J. Snyder and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2014-09-23 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five years ago, Don Snyder was teaching English at Colgate University. He was forty years old and had a wife, three children, a new baby on the way, and what seemed like a secure middle-class future. But then Snyder lost his chance at tenure -- and, all of a sudden, he was out of a job. The Cliff Walk is a moving, clear-eyed account of Snyder's agonizing loss and what it feels like to fall, rung by rung, down the socio-economic ladder. Snyder chronicles the denial and disbelief he went through as his hopes of finding another teaching job faded after being rejected for ninety positions. He explains how each painful change -- selling his house, buying groceries with food stamps -- reminded him how much he and his family had taken for granted in their previous life. And he describes how he finally found new hope in a job on a home construction crew in Maine. Working outside for ten hours a day through a vicious winter taught Snyder about his own cowardice and the lies he had come to believe about what a professional life of hard work entitled him to. Written with precision and elegance, The Cliff Walk captures the depth of one family's love and speaks to anyone who has ever wondered what it would be like to be out of a job and out in the cold.

Book Queer Rebellion in the Novels of Michelle Cliff

Download or read book Queer Rebellion in the Novels of Michelle Cliff written by Kaisa Ilmonen and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores Jamaican-American author Michelle Cliff’s (1946–2016) literary rebellion against the colonial, gendered and racist norms of Western Modernity. It studies the sexualized circuits of the Atlantic world, drawing on the fields of literary criticism, feminist theories, queer studies and Caribbean studies. In order to do this, the book develops the theoretical paradigm of intersectionality. It also addresses the disturbing questions concerning the sexual politics of transatlantic modernity as represented in Cliff’s novels. Cliff’s rebellious poetics envisions the colonial Caribbean past in new ways. Her novels tell stories about Caribbean queer characters setting the queer as a site of postcolonial agency and as a perspective out of which colonial history can be re-written. This book considers myths, rites, and cultural memory as sites of healing in the midst of colonial bodily politics. Transnational histories, identity and ethics emerge as intertwined in Cliff’s feminist novels.

  • ISBN : 1999470621

Book excerpt: During a tropical storm in the summer of 1939, lightkeeper Mark Gordon fell to his death from atop the Ravens Cliff lighthouse. Most people believed that his fall was due to the gale force winds that were lashing the isolated island. Some disagreed, claiming that the cause of his death was not of this world, but rather a supernatural act of revenge. Regardless, the lighthouse was decommissioned soon after, and Gordon's widow and two children turned the island into a thriving summer resort. Ravens Cliff became the home of a world-class training facility for aspiring tennis players and competition boaters. Now, twenty years later, Diane Wentworth and her teenage daughter, Emma, have come to Ravens Cliff Resort for a week of tennis lessons and relaxation. However, the lighthouse, where they are staying, appears to be haunted by a mystery so frightening they may not leave the resort alive. Like the spiral stairs inside the lighthouse, the twists and turns of the plot will take audiences on an edge-of-the-seat journey, where no one in the cast is what s/he appears to be, and where some of the players will not survive to the final curtain! Ravens Cliff, A Two Act Play is a modern Gothic thriller of revenge and family conflict. It is performed in two acts, is played out on a single set, features a cast of six actors (4F, 2M), and runs approximately 90 minutes plus an intermission. This presentation manuscript promises to be a frighteningly fun experience for anyone who enjoys a good thriller! Theater producers and directors will love it---especially the bonus offer, inside, for production and duplication rights!
