Book Master Johannes Wacht Fantasy and Horror Classics

Download or read book Master Johannes Wacht Fantasy and Horror Classics written by E. T. A. Hoffmann and published by Read Books Ltd. This book was released on 2015-10-21 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This early work by E. T. A. Hoffmann was originally published in the 19th century. Born in Königsberg, East Prussia in 1776, Hoffmann's family were all jurists, and during his youth he was initially encouraged to pursue a career in law. However, in his late teens Hoffman became increasingly interested in literature and philosophy, and spent much of his time reading German classicists and attending lectures by, amongst others, Immanuel Kant. Hoffman went on to produce a great range of both literary and musical works. Probably Hoffman's most well-known story, produced in 1816, is 'The Nutcracker and the Mouse King', due to the fact that - some seventy-six years later - it inspired Tchaikovsky's ballet The Nutcracker. In the same vein, his story 'The Sandman' provided both the inspiration for Léo Delibes's ballet Coppélia, and the basis for a highly influential essay by Sigmund Freud, called 'The Uncanny'. (Indeed, Freud referred to Hoffman as the "unrivalled master of the uncanny in literature.") Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900's and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions.

Book Flower a Story of the Nativity

    Book Details:
  • Author : Wayne Ernest Stahre
  • Publisher : Habitation of Chimham Publi
  • Release : 2008-05
  • ISBN : 1606430815
  • Pages : 382 pages

Download or read book Flower a Story of the Nativity written by Wayne Ernest Stahre and published by Habitation of Chimham Publi. This book was released on 2008-05 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flower is a formidable woman who, along with her husband Mordecai, runs the most respected inn in all of Judea. She loves her husband, friends, all children and babies. But she has problems; the angels Gabriel and Michael are visiting her, thieves are plotting her murder, Romans are invading her beloved Bethlehem, she has the reputation of being the strongest 'man' in the city, and with the census in full swing, traffic is gridlocked and parking is difficult at the market. Flower, a Story of the Nativity, is not the typical Nativity Story. It is a gritty, exciting, and realistic adventure story. While some of the characters are fictitious the people and events are patterned as realistically as possible after what we know of the circumstances. With that in mind, this book is true to the Biblical accounts. Additionally, it addresses many questions; Who were the Wise Men, Where were they from and what became of them? What was the Star of Bethlehem? How did Gabriel and Michael interact with people? Why was there a census? Why did God allow the innocents to be murdered? Why are the genealogies in Matthew and Luke different? Why does Luke say Jesus was taken to Nazareth after his birth but Matthew says he fled to Egypt, and many more.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Spear: Pro Denuo presents the saga of Roman Centurion Gaius Crastinus vividly to life. Up close and personal, this often-dark look into the Legions of Rome is seen through the eyes of a brave soldier and man of honor. Gaius “Killer” Crastinus and his fellow veterans, Vorenus, Pullo and Bacculus, have won honor and glory in the service of the SPQR. Now these comrades must introduce a new consignment of recruits to life in the Roman Army. One of them is Gaius’ younger brother Marcus. But training for the young soldiers is cut far too short, for war brews in Lusitania. With only three weeks of training, the newly constituted X Legion is ordered north. Their order is to stop Lusitanii incursions into the province of Hispanica forever. Marcus and his fellow recruits follow Gaius in a desperate fight to safeguard their homeland. If they survive, even larger troubles loom to the east. Mob violence in Rome and a quarter-million Helvetian tribesmen are invading provinces in southern Gaul. When Marcus is the one chosen to enter enemy territory on a secret mission, only the “soldier’s god” Mithras knows if he will succeed. This well-researched novel is the sequel to the author’s first book First Spear: Rudimenta (Xlibris 2009).

Book The Middle Ages at Work

Download or read book The Middle Ages at Work written by K. Robertson and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-30 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This timely volume examines the commitments of historicism in the wake of New Historicism. It contributes to the construction of a materialist historicism while, at the same time, proposing that discussions of work need not be limited to the clash between labour and capital. To this end, the essays offer more than a strictly historical view of the complex terms, social and literary, within which labour was treated in the medieval period. Several of the essays strive to reformulate the very critical language we use to think about the categories of labour and work through a continually doubled engagement with modern theories of labour and medieval theories and practices of labour.
